I find it interesting that he’s almost making mouth sounds like an asmrist.. I wonder if asmr is related to this grooming behavior in primates and that’s what tingles come from
It's called lip smacking and most primates make these noises, just as humans lip smack but a lot of bullsh!t follows!!! lol! But seriously, it's a way for them to communicate that they don't mean any harm and wanna be friends. Also Mommas do this to calm the young. And what we perceive as them "smiling", is actually a fear response known as a fear grimace. Yawns are not always just a yawn but a sign of aggression, females turning their backsides to dominant monkeys is a sign of respect and submission. It's amazing how many ways they communicate!
I think that is the prevailing theory actually! Tingles as a means of reward for participating in bonding and grooming behavior. More bonded and social = safer. The rule that has existed for millennia
I'vr heard across continents, languages, ages and genders us humans doing a sound similar to that lip smacking but with the tip of the tongue, to soothe partners, children, pets and random animals... So yeah there has to be something deeply rooted there among us primates.
Reminds me of when my ex used to spend like 2 hours picking at the pores on my shoulders and upper back before we took a shower. I never understood what it was she thought she was doing, but it was relaxing for both of us so i didn't mind.
Earlier today I watched a role-reverse video where the older human groomed the adult monkey. He used a fine-tooth comb thru the monkey's back hair. Then used his fingers to pretend to look for lice, scanning, scanning, scanning. Finally, he gave the monkey a back and limb massage...all while this monkey was splayed out on a mini massage table! The primate fell asleep after a few minutes of being groomed by the human.
That bits of the skin looked a bit irritated and was the 2orst up until that point so imo the lil monke was wondering about his companion's health and what to do with that skin bit in his personal care attendant role.
