Ep. 50 1930s ART DECO Painted Dresser RESTORATION

I found another Art Deco Chest of Drawers on Facebook Marketplace. This one was $10 and is in need of some attention. The factory finish is hiding under layers of primer and yellow enamel. This painted dresser is probably from the 1930s or 1940s and would fit into the mass produced Streamline Moderne category. This would not be a good furniture flip for profit, but is a good solid dresser to use and enjoy in your own home. Watch me spend hours scraping all that Yellow Paint!

This was an exciting project, but I had high expectations and was let down several times along the way. I will get back to narrating my videos next weekend. Check out the other Art Deco Restoration on my channel if you haven't seen that yet. One of my favorite projects! Thank you all for the support! Barry
While I missed the mellifluous and calming sound of your voice, this was nice just to sit back and watch. I finally got my Bahco scaper delivered, what a difference just having that knob at the top makes for control! Makes paint scraping almost fun... almost...
I prefer listening to your voice and opinions while you work
I always enjoy hearing you speak while watching, but I was able to follow along just fine! I'm sorry that you felt disappointed along the way 😔. But my goodness! That much paint, sinking into every groove and your patience level with all of the detailed pieces, you deserve to feel proud. You can only sand so far before you destroy. I'm not much of drinker, but those detailed pieces would have required several weeks and cases of beer.
There is a lot to be said for saying nothing. It adds to the mystery of the restoration when you don't narrate.
Sometimes words just get in the way. . . 💚💚💚
Whoever painted this yellow deserves life without parole.
Lol!!!
I can't imagine how anyone would have thought that a coat of paint would enhance that furniture. Please continue to restore furniture to its original and beautiful appearance.
While the narration was missed, those end shots of the piece being rescued from that hideous yellow paint are so satisfying!
Why anyone would paint this piece is beyond me. The beauty you brought out by cleaning all the carvings out is astounding. Well done.
Thank you very much! Barry
I could never understand how anybody could take a beautiful piece of wood furniture and “PAINT “ it. Wood should be treasured! You should get a medal for your hard work and dedication to this piece. Oh yea, it looks awesome! Cheers
Watching the scraping of the yellow paint was so soothing to watch.
Thank you!
I’ll never understand why people paint beautiful wood pieces like this. And bright yellow too!
Wow! You sure got your $10 out of that piece! You took it from Big Bird to elegant❣️
Thank you!!!
This dresser in yellow reminds me of my beautiful Great-Auntie who used to wear purple all the time with orange lipstick. They finally discontinued making the orange shade and we got her to switch to a nice rose color. You did this to the dresser by removing the yellow and giving it a lovely dark finish. It looks amazing!!!
Nothing wrong with purple and orange. My dad's mom was a preacher's wife and was of the era where ladies made their own hats for church, complete with the requisite netting and artificial flowers and fruits. And, grandma's hats were a riot of color. Grandma's theory was look to nature and consider a flower garden. It was not at all for there to be a mixture of flowers of different colors side by side. She said, "if it is good enough for God, it's good enough for me." One of my favorite flower and color combos is the deepest of purple alyssum planted as a carpet for strategically arranged French marigolds .... the brightest and deepest oranges possible. I think my grandma, and God, would approve.
@@tinydancer7426 Your Grandma was right! Color is a great thing in nature and fashion. But, it wasn't the purple and orange combination per se, it was the fact that the orange wasn't her best color and it took attention away from her beauty. I mean she would wear the same orange lipstick on the 4th of July wearing red, white and blue. She just usually wore a lot of purple. I imagine that those hats looked great...😍 That generation of my family wore hats as well, but from my memories and the pictures, they weren't as colorful. Edited for spelling.
@@2Cambell Did she ever wear a red hat with her purple dresses?
@@tinydancer7426 No, that wasn't a thing then! 😄 She had fine hats for church and special occasions, but she also had a straw hat for working in her garden, she had a fishing hat (that she kept her extra hooks on) and her cowgirl hat. She had a horse. My uncle has her fishing hat. She taught him how to fish 🐟 🐠 🎣 😊 I have her cowgirl hat, because I live rural and ride horses. 🐎 😉
@@KingsleyGeorgia Rats! I don't text. I had to get a new phone and stupidly let myself get talked into one of those "smart phones". I told the guy in the store to not turn on/activate any features/apps cuz all I use my phone for a phone away from home ..... to make calls and/or receive emergency calls from the few people I have given my cell number to. I haven't been able to figure out how to delete the nuisance random calls from telemarketers.
Who would paint such a masterpiece... the 90's... Fantastic restoration.
I thought that wood was probably happy to breathe after all that paint was gone! Great job, Barry!! Look forward to narration in the future.
Thank you Kathryn
I love watching the paint chips being sucked up into the vacuum hose as much as I loved seeing it get scraped off!
Me too!
This is the chest of drawers my grandparents had in their bedroom. They bought the set right before my aunt was born in 1929. There was a vanity with a big round mirror and a bedframe and two nightstands. It all fit nicely into their bedroom in their Chicago bungalow. Long ago memories.🌸
Sounds exactly like my grandparents' bedroom set. Dresser (I don't believe mine has the decorative board on the back of the top tho), vanity and full-size head/foot board. It was their wedding present in 1939. The foot board is broken, and the vanity is in storage, but my daughter (who will be 30 next month) is using the dresser.
My grandmother had the exact same set
My grandparents had the set as well but when my grandma moved to a retirement home she took the bed & dresser & my Mom brought the other one here to SoCal. My niece had it in her room growing up & my sister sold it at a yard sale. Would love to have it now!
@@anniewardlow9297 I like to think my grandparents’ set has a whole new life with someone else - or maybe several someone elses. I love that your grandmother’s furniture continued in your family for more generations.🌸
@@deborahmatatall I love old furniture especially when you know someone knows how to restore it!
Wink 😉!
Truly gorgeous! You have the skills of European museum restoration departements.
So glad you brought her dignity back. 💝
I'm so glad you're out there saving one piece of furniture at a time. I love that you can find beauty where others see junk.
Thank you so much
Wow, I was unprepared for how beautifully this piece turned out, and you photographed it perfectly. Thank you!!
Thank you
It never ceases to amaze me what people can do to a piece of furniture.
Those pieces have so much character. You made it beautiful again.
She’s beautiful again! She just needed someone like you to care enough to take the time to restore to new glory!
It's heart warming to see pieces restored to their former beauty. Respect for your craftsmanship is enjoyable to see. Thank You
WOW!!! WELL DONE!!!
THIS CHEST OF DRAWERS RESTORATION IS SO BEAUTIIFUL!!!💖💖💖💖💖
There she stood on wobbly legs, almost like a sad, painted clown. At the end she stood in her former glory! ...solid with regal confidence!!
Very good job, Barry!
She cleaned up BEAUTIFULLY.
Thank you
An authentic and proper restoration. No up cycling here. Excellent job
Thank you Alexander!
Nice you kept the old wooden drawer pulls. I love them.
I love anything Art Deco and painting this beautiful piece was a crime. You did a wonderful restoration.
GORGEOUS! I love the natural wood version!
Thank you
Love seeing the pieces you restore to their former glory. I would rather see wood grain pieces than see them painted.
When I saw this yellow chest of drawers all I could think of was the previous yellow Art Deco chest. At least the paint came off so much easier with this one. Once again a beautiful restoration.
Great feedback
Oh my gosh I would have loved scraping & especially peeling off that yellow paint! Production of this video was a nice change of pace. 🙏
How beautiful.
A labour of love and devotion.
Thank you so much
56.5k subs….we’ll deserved, Barry! Keep up the quality work and high-end videos. - Phil
I just love watching you work, as much as I love and admire the transformations that you bring about. I have to say this, I'm glad that you will return to narrating your films. Your soothing voice is one of the reasons I love your films so much. Something about your demeanour is just so warm and welcoming and it feels much more personal to me. Anyway, I'm a great admirer of your work and I really appreciate the knowledge that you share and the quality content you create. Thank you for doing what you do. You truly are an artist.
I love the narrations too. I usually don’t understand something in every video.
Amen
Ugh, it hurts when I see an old beauty like this painted over. But I understand; some people don't have the skills to bring it back like you can!
Thank you Tara
Just fab Barry, such a serene vid to watch and a brilliant job done, so much yellow paint to remove and a beautiful result, thank you. You are my go to place when I'm trying to unwind, I feel we are a community, all enjoying your posts together.
I really appreciate this
The dresser looks loved, back to it’s beautiful self.
That looks so nice! The dark wax was the right choice. Can't believe how smooth and buttery it looks.
Thank you Teresa
Beautiful restoration! You’ve got a great eye for finding these diamonds in the rough, and saving them.😍
Thank you Adrienne
Nice retro design and good work with that finish. The painted furniture is pain in the butt :)
Thank you my friend. I watch all your videos!
I respect how you are so organized, and have so many pertinent tools.
So glad I found your channel. I have had a Mad City Modern marathon watching your videos.
I love this bloke too! He used to do more videos on UA-cam when he first started but now that he has a stand in warehouse and sells his restored work on, and he does other media things (which I have no idea how to follow) I’m always waiting for a new video. But not often surprised with them. When they do show up I’m delighted. He has a lovely caring, interesting and easy way with him!
You have such a great arsenal of scraping tools for all those nooks and crannies. What a labor intensive job. Finished piece looks great
Thank you so much Mary
The dark wax was just perfect for this piece of furniture.
I must say your dulcet tones were missed! 😀
Thank you Lesley!
Another fascinating video, all that yellow paint=YUK. But a stellar job again. Miss your soothing voice. I love to watch your stuff before I go to sleep, so relaxing.
I'm back
Do miss your commentary Barry. Lovely piece of furniture, beautifully brought back to it's finest version.
Hope you enjoy the commentary in the new video
Really beautiful. I hate it when people paint wooden furniture. Lovely that you restored it to its former beauty
Thank you so much!
Dark wax was the perfect finish. All that yellow paint was driving me crazy. Your next week project is very appealing to me.
That was definitely a labor of love. So much detail work for this one. But it turned out to be lovely!
Good video Barry! I needed that oasis of calm in my day. The dramatic lighting of the dresser in the reveal nicely highlights the star of the show!
That must be so satisfying when the paint scrapes off so quickly like it did for part of the dresser!
Wow! A yellow explosion. This turned out beautifully. Well done!
It is so expertly and beautifully restored. I especially like Decco furniture when, as in this case, it is made of solid wood.
Me too!
Wow! Looks amazing and yes, I love watching paint stripping. So satisfying. 😂
One of my favorite styles of furniture.
Me too
You have the patience of Job. The commitment you show to making sure that you provide the very best finish possible continues to impress and enlighten me. You continue to provide an exceptional level of content that is done with humility and style. Thanks for everything, Barry.
Love your comment. Yes, humility and style.
Fabulous reclamation & restoration, fun to watch you use dental tools to remove paint in even the skinniest crevices. The quiet was ok, but you do have very pleasant voice when you narrate too.
Is this real? Aww so kind of you - Thank you! But shipping anything to northern Canada might be painful for you! Perhaps I could regift it back to you as little thank you for all the enjoyment & tranquillity you provide. Thank you very much. Ann Marie
Your music is very powerful believe it not. It goes well with the furniture you refurbished. Beautiful Barry
Yellow brick road of paint scraps…lovely satisfying job
My goodness. That was a lot of work, but you saved this chest and made it beautiful again.
When the subtitle "Who loves scraping paint?" popped up, I immediately thought that I don't, but I really like watching you do it. The dark finish was great; in fact, I remember many of the pieces of that style originally in a dark finish, so it's a perfect match. And I never would have thought that slo-mo paint scraping was a thing, but it's a very effective way to emphasize the detail in this work. The music at the end was a soothing segue to the reveal. I've said before that your camera work and production values are an outstanding feature of your channel, but it bears saying again. Thank you, Barry!!!
i adore Art deco and could not believe this was painted yellow. You sure scored on the price. Now it's beautiful lines truly shine. I love your staging, always so spot on
Wow! You would never have known that was under all that paint. You saved it.
It's always fun digging
That was a labor of love right there. She's beautiful!!
Such a beautiful piece hidden under that yellow paint
Such a beautiful piece. You made it beautiful again.
A timeless, elegant style.
A masterful restoration! It almost looks brand new.
Thank you so much
Looks great and happy to see it back to its formal glory.
The decorative scrolling at top and base is an interesting feature. It's almost as if the dresser is on the cusp of two styles, not quite transitioned to purely deco.
Well said. Thank you for the great feedback
Almost a soft Eastlake feeling detail to those two pieces.
Thank you for not removing that back piece. In too many restorations, that piece was tossed yet it serves a very useful purpose...to keep stuff from falling the behind the drawers or dresser. Not sure why you would have expectations on a piece that was intended to be affordable, not a collectors item. It looks great!
Thank you so much
This piece of furniture had a tragic accident and needed plastic surgery!!!!!! So satisfying to watch you remove the paint! You are an excellent doctor.... you made it look amazing! Thanks so much for sharing
Stunning, Barry! It’s wonderful to see how you bring new life to all these pieces you restore. Ken
So glad in you reused the original pulls.
Me too!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. IT'S FABULOUS! I SAW THE BRASS CRANES AND ITS THE PERFECT COMPLIMENT. ❤️
.......to its former glory. U r an artist fir sure.
This is so very now and the past.
I like how you accent your projects with the brass pieces.
Keep doing you ❤️💩
Nice and solid piece. It's good you bring it back. Well done.
Thank you
This is the first video of yours I have watched. I enjoyed the silence. Great work.
Welcome to the channel! Barry
I have a very similar dresser. The pulls are different but it has the fluted edges and the same basic shape. I remember it used to have the piece on top but must have been broken off at some point. The drawers are dove tailed as well. My mother was actually the one who painted ours back in the early sixties because it was ugly to her. She painted it off white the antiqued it. I remember watching her do this even though I was very young. I think ours is taller than his one. The drawers are huge and I remember one of our cats liked to crawl inside and take a nap and later had kittens in one of the drawers.
Your piece turned out beautifully!
So cool that you still have it
@@MadCityModern the thing is solid and a work horse! My daughter has it now and I’m planning on having it restored soon for her.
This is an amazing restoration. The details of the carvings are stunning, and the dark wax really sets off the wood grain.
Pretty sure this piece would have gone to landfill if you hadn’t rescued it. Your persistence is over the top admirable, you did a fantastic job. Do what your time allows, I’m sure there aren’t enough hours in your day. Adding in a voiceover adds even more to the work of editing. If we get voiceover, it’s a special bonus for us!
I have a waterfall tall boy and it's got so many details and I really really like it. My grandparents parents and my aunt and uncle all had waterfall furniture. And then I have an antique vanity that some people might want to make it into nightstands but I would never do that it's too pretty to break it up. Thank you for sharing Barry I would have never thought of using wax to finish off the piece and it makes sense what you did. Great job honey 🥳🎉
I really love this style too!
Simply stunning
Thank you
This was a labor of love. I honestly don’t mind painted furniture when it is done right but this little lady wasn’t! I’m so glad you brought her beauty back. She may be in her 80s but she doesn’t look it! Thank you for sharing your talent.
That is a furniture, not a woman. Why so many people like to call furniture lady? Do you think women and furniture are the same thing?
As much as I love your narration, the ASMR moment was great!
It's so satisfying to see a piece of furniture freed from layers of stifling paint. You can almost hear it breathing in the fresh air.😃
You haved restored it to it's natural glory!
This one hit home with me I had a great Aunt Agnes that was like a grandmother to me, and she had the whole bedroom set to that. That dresser, nightstand, dressing table, and bed. I'm not quite sure what happened to it when she died but I'd love to have it now in my guest room. Thanks for the video's, it is relaxing to me to get on my computer in the evenings and watch these kinds of video's.
Well done for saving this treasure from the landfill!
Came for the Art Deco, stayed for the gun show. 😂😂😂
Lovely work.
Restoring a piece with carvings is extremely time consuming.
Great job! 💜
Thank you Julie
It as so relaxing that I watched twice! In all fairness I was late for the live….
Great job as always Barry!
Thank you for all your support!
Such a satisfying scrape job, all that yellow flakage
Great job Barry. I love how it turned out. So much better now. Well done.
Great job, Barry, as always and the chest is now absolutely beautiful.
I look forward to hearing you narrate again.
I like the all action no narration content.
Thank you for the great feedback
I think it is insane that you would sand furniture around all the delicate electronic equipment.
Nah. I mostly use equipment that has been neglected for years. Nothing better than using it once again
Absolutely stunning Barry... It is almost identical to my Grandma's bedroom suite dresser... she had the matching vanity and bed ends as well and a stool for the vanity that all matched.
