It has everything to with the count and beat. Women are always left lead. When a man is on side: left foot lead. When a man front facing her her right foot lead to give that mirror effect. Recommendation: don't watch the feet, watch the lead hands.
It's a dance. So move to the music, not getting far away from your basics. Your partner (lead) will move you accordingly. Get your basics down, and the footwork will follow.
