Sonic Generations did a lot of things right. But if you're a Genesis Sonic purist, you're probably not happy with the way it handled Classic Sonic's Physics (particularly the focus on the overpowered spindash) and implemented the Boost Formula. So today we answer the question: can you beat Sonic Generations without boosting OR spindashing?

Sega did a poll in 2009 about the most popular Sonic levels from each game and the results became the Generations stages. This is why there's 4 city levels.

I like how it’s literally almost impossible to play as classic sonic, and ironically it’s calming to play as modern sonic.

I didn't realize it wasn't clear in the video until I started seeing comments like this, but my game hardlocked at that section, I couldn't move at all. Had to restart the game like 4 times to get it to recognize my controller. On my second playthrough of the level, I jumped through those walls.

Honestly, I thought that the modern stages would be much harder in this challenge. I didn't even realize how much you need the spindash in classic stages

Anyone else know that if shadow gets enough rings he can actually survive the boost attack and the race will still keep going but he has to have like hundreds of rings

This is literally a perfect showcase of how buggy the physics of generations can be. Every time sonic did something weird on a ramp in this video I could literally feel it

@@NeatOnTheRocks isn't every sonic game buggy to the bs tho? Like, the amount of jank from the original trilogy and knuckles to the adventure games, Hero's, Shadow, so on and so forth, is hilarious in of itself.
Almost every game with sonics name on it (or ending with "The Hedgehog") is held together with hopes and dreams.
You were using a fully completed save right, so did you just forget about the skill shop?
Athleticism reduces speed loss moving uphill and the elemental shields seem like they break this challenge in half lol.
Other than that great video, can't say I've ever seen someone enjoy the modern stages more without boosting; I've always found the appeal in managing your speed and making those split second reactions to keep yourself on the fastest path.
Yeah I had a section mentioning what skills I used but it was slow and boring right at the beginning of the video so it got cut for retention. I used athleticism just for my sanity because in my experiments it didn't seem to change the viability of the run. Other than that I pretty much used no skills. Otherwise Super Sonic would make this a pretty boring video 😂

Funnily enough when I play a new boost game, my first playthrough of a level uses limited boosting so I can learn the layout of the level, and then when I replay I can aim to go for those higher/alternate sections. When you get enough practice in you can really hit that flow that you described having without boosting which is so satisfying!
(The one exception to this is of course Forces, because there's no interesting level design to be seen and I quickly learnt you just boost to win in that game)

Did not know people had beef with classic sonic's design or gameplay, I find him perfect fine in both aspects in this game.
Not so much in forces though
When the game came out I wasn't mad about it, but playing Origins or Mania and coming back to this game is mad jarring

I want this back.
As much as I LOVE frontiers- the story is PEAK and the open zone system is really nice! (Altho third island is kinda too linear) - I want to go back to this type of format one day.
Like mix Sonic Frontier’s dashing system into Sonic Generation’s level design and overall control of Sonic- you get a good level designed game for the stylized platforms- or otherwise called- Zones.
… in other words I just miss this type of control on Sonic.
Cyber Space levels felt too much like an after thought. I actually really like how they controlled... sometimes, the levels just didn't feel like they were designed for the controls for some reason

What i love about frontiers is that boost is slower and doesn't kill enemies, which makes it more balanced and more fun to play

If Sonic Generations boost didn't kill enemies , the whole enemy placement would have to be changed .
And of course boost doesn't kill in frontiers. There is a reason that the game has a combat system
Kinda funny how Modern without his main speed-gimmick is still fun to play, and Classic is...

Sky Sanctuary and City Escape have got to be the best modern Sonic levels in the game.

You know i have something that will make modern Sonic's stages even more fun. Drifting allows you to get a burst of momentum and speed and it is just a little bit faster than base running.
Drifting was surprisingly unuseful actually. It's clearly meant to be used while boosting and just turns you way too sharply if you're not. I tried using it more around Speed Highway and Shadow and I just kept running into walls and killing all my speed 😅
@@NeatOnTheRocks look just use it for a quick jump of speed and wiggle it back and forward. Also you didn't mention if you could use upgrades in this challenge.
I have never thought in my life that I'd EVER find a Sonic fan that doesn't enjoy Sonic Generations.

Good job man! This video was super fun to watch, I tried this challenge myself by doing No Boost & No Homing attack but got stuck on Rooftop Run act 2
I thought about no homing attack but I knew Egg Dragoon would be impossible

What i find weird about classic sonic is that he DOES gain a lot of momentum down slopes but only when you are running normally

Huh. didn't think modern sonic without boost would be fun, but as you mentioned, it seems like a more than viable option for 3D sonic gameplay.

Highly recommend the “Classic Sonic Improvement” mod. Not only it fixes all physic problems in Classic Sonic’s stages, but also some neat tweaks such as: peelout, dropdash, the Classic Sonic model used on cutscenes and promotional art, neat new Classic Tails, Robotnik and Metal Sonic models inspired by both their original JP and US appearances, addition of Classic Knuckles which is used at the start of act 1 of Sky Sanctuary as a recreation of the cutscene in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and the option to remove anything from the mod.
I just saw the trailer for that mod for the first time today, actually. Metal Sonic looks dope as hell

There's this speedrunning exploit called M-speed/D-speed where you tilt your left stick ever so slightly forward while continuously jumping. You build an insane amount of speed (much more than boosting/spindashing). Pretty hard to do consistently tho

The point of the boost is that you get instant speed but are hard to control, and reach flow by dodging the environmental hazards, which makes more sense since sonic must have insane reflexes to run so fast through everything.
Classic in gens isn't like sonic 3 but it's fun platforming thanks to the tweaked bounce and the broken spindash a la sa1 letting you do neat skips.
Sonic fans actually accept that a game isn't for them instead of saying "this isn't sonic its ass"

7:30 There's a trick you can use by doing the drift, you can move left and right and it will speed you up, it helps with this boss.
I've seen it done but I couldn't figure out how to do it!

wonder if sonic would be good for an arcade parkour style game.
I'm a proponent of them getting even less arcade-y, I think a more immersive Sonic title that doubles down on what worked in Frontiers would be peak Sonic gameplay

For modern sonic if you need a harder to control burst of speed in 3d sections you should use the drift.

I personally prefer boosting over precise platforming. Learning the level beforehand lets you go as fast as possible without obliterating yourself and it can be a lot of fun. Meanwhile with precise platforming you either have to stop mid level and painstakingly inch your way through certain sections or just air boost past it altogether completely eliminating the purpose of it. With that being said, not sure I understand your viewpoint with you implying that Sonic isn't fun with boosting.
With boosting I feel like I have less time to react to incoming... anything, really, and so (especially in the worse-designed levels) I feel like the game is divided between boosting-going-fast-high-spectacle stuff and... the actual platforming. And I'mpretty sure that divide is intentional--the 2D sections pretty much force it to be so.
I found Sky Sanctuary Modern to be, at least serendipitously, designed in such a way that if I had a little bit of time to react to my surroundings (by not boosting, to be specific), I was able to build a flow and essentially never stop running from beginning to goal ring.
For me, building that flow has always been the most satisfying way to play Sonic.

I appreciate the comedy but you almost seem mad that the designers didn’t make it easy to beat without boost. That’s like trynna beat a Mario game without jumping or call of duty campaign with using a gun
I'm definitely mad they put such an emphasis on Spindashing. I knew what I was getting into without the boost but I mean FUCK
The idea of the “boost formula” should I’ve stopped at unleashed, the whole point was to try and race through the level at top speed all the while reacting to the obstacles around you. Wasn’t really about building up speed and maintaining that speed like the old games. Generations just butchered it completely, for me unleashed will always be the best and only good boost formula sonic game.
I think Frontiers does a decent job of marrying momentum/physics platforming and high-speed, reaction based action, though I'm more excited to see how they improve upon the concept in the future
Fun fact: this challenge is easier in the 3ds version minus modern mushroom hill, modern green hill & maybe the silver fight due to jump sliding or jump rolling if your playing as classic sonic.
Seeing as the 3DS version is entirely 2D, I'm actually surprised to learn this
