I didn't realize it wasn't clear in the video until I started seeing comments like this, but my game hardlocked at that section, I couldn't move at all. Had to restart the game like 4 times to get it to recognize my controller. On my second playthrough of the level, I jumped through those walls.

Like, the amount of jank from the original trilogy and knuckles to the adventure games, Hero's, Shadow, so on and so forth, is hilarious in of itself. Almost every game with sonics name on it (or ending with "The Hedgehog") is held together with hopes and dreams.

Anyone else know that if shadow gets enough rings he can actually survive the boost attack and the race will still keep going but he has to have like hundreds of rings
Funnily enough when I play a new boost game, my first playthrough of a level uses limited boosting so I can learn the layout of the level, and then when I replay I can aim to go for those higher/alternate sections. When you get enough practice in you can really hit that flow that you described having without boosting which is so satisfying! (The one exception to this is of course Forces, because there's no interesting level design to be seen and I quickly learnt you just boost to win in that game)

You were using a fully completed save right, so did you just forget about the skill shop? Athleticism reduces speed loss moving uphill and the elemental shields seem like they break this challenge in half lol. Other than that great video, can't say I've ever seen someone enjoy the modern stages more without boosting; I've always found the appeal in managing your speed and making those split second reactions to keep yourself on the fastest path.
Yeah I had a section mentioning what skills I used but it was slow and boring right at the beginning of the video so it got cut for retention. I used athleticism just for my sanity because in my experiments it didn't seem to change the viability of the run. Other than that I pretty much used no skills. Otherwise Super Sonic would make this a pretty boring video 😂

Thank you for teaching me that the "Boost" mechanic is an absolute menace to society! I agree with you in that I had absolutely so much more fun playing Sonic Generations for the first time without using Boost! Though... I really don't wanna be that guy... but you missed one last level, that being the final boss with the Time Eater. I've literally been trying for hours trying to beat the Time Eater without the stupid Boost, and I've had no luck... as I forbitten myself from using the forsaken Boost in any sonic game from now on!
It's very strange to compare the two . If Sonic Generations boost didn't kill enemies , the whole enemy placement would have to be changed . And of course boost doesn't kill in frontiers. There is a reason that the game has a combat system
I miss this. Where sonic moves so smoothly and unjanky… I want this back. As much as I LOVE frontiers- the story is PEAK and the open zone system is really nice! (Altho third island is kinda too linear) - I want to go back to this type of format one day. Like mix Sonic Frontier’s dashing system into Sonic Generation’s level design and overall control of Sonic- you get a good level designed game for the stylized platforms- or otherwise called- Zones. … in other words I just miss this type of control on Sonic.
Cyber Space levels felt too much like an after thought. I actually really like how they controlled... sometimes, the levels just didn't feel like they were designed for the controls for some reason

You know i have something that will make modern Sonic's stages even more fun. Drifting allows you to get a burst of momentum and speed and it is just a little bit faster than base running.
Drifting was surprisingly unuseful actually. It's clearly meant to be used while boosting and just turns you way too sharply if you're not. I tried using it more around Speed Highway and Shadow and I just kept running into walls and killing all my speed 😅
@@NeatOnTheRocks look just use it for a quick jump of speed and wiggle it back and forward. Also you didn't mention if you could use upgrades in this challenge.
Highly recommend the “Classic Sonic Improvement” mod. Not only it fixes all physic problems in Classic Sonic’s stages, but also some neat tweaks such as: peelout, dropdash, the Classic Sonic model used on cutscenes and promotional art, neat new Classic Tails, Robotnik and Metal Sonic models inspired by both their original JP and US appearances, addition of Classic Knuckles which is used at the start of act 1 of Sky Sanctuary as a recreation of the cutscene in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and the option to remove anything from the mod.

Huh. didn't think modern sonic without boost would be fun, but as you mentioned, it seems like a more than viable option for 3D sonic gameplay. You really succeeded in making this fun to watch with no obnoxious editing and a great script, enjoyed every part of it.
There's this speedrunning exploit called M-speed/D-speed where you tilt your left stick ever so slightly forward while continuously jumping. You build an insane amount of speed (much more than boosting/spindashing). Pretty hard to do consistently tho

I actually fell back in love with this game after the release of Sonic X Shadow Generations when going back to 100% the collectibles due to this. I realized that i had never tried to play Modern Sonic without attempting to be a speed maniac, running into walls/enemies, and falling into pits. I found that the platforming and level design was actually quite enjoyable to scour. The reason was that when hunting for chao and red rings, i was forced to search all corners of the map slowly. I even gained an appreciation for Classic Sonic's gameplay and levels by going slower... i used to loathe him and his levels. Now they're fun....wth is going on? Lol I almost feel like people would enjoy boost formula games more by first taking time to learn the levels, finding all shortcuts & collectables and saving S Rank speed boosting+doppleganger challenge for last so you can prove your new skills and knowledge of the level. I wish this sort of progression could be semi-forced on us. Like you have to "unlock" boosting through a level by playing it once boostless first (i know that sounds shitty but it would all depend on presentation) I never had patience for this before and always saw gens as a meh game. Now im really impressed by the love that was put into it and want more great levels with collectibles and shortcuts to disect.

Sky Sanctuary and City Escape have got to be the best modern Sonic levels in the game.
