I was wondering how you guys were gonna condense Hosea's speech into your video format. It doesn't really lend itself well to Let's Plays. Thanks for making me nearly choke on some food from laughing Just for those curious, there is an option to tell Hosea that you don't really care about the NCR which skips the majority of the conversation. Hosea's lines about the Vulture's motives are there for those interested in how they fit into the world building of the main game. It's a tricky one to write as you don't want to fall into the same old cliches from the base game like "taxes" or use buzzwords. Describing Hosea's ideas with examples was important to try and make him seem persuasive but at the same time it can really bring the game's pace to a grinding halt. You can engage with this part as much as you'd like to, or not, when playing. Skipping it is an option if this kind of thing is not your cup of tea. I'm always learning when it comes to writing and putting the player in engaging scenarios. I hope it didn't end up too long winded. Things pick up from here in terms of action for those in the audience who want more shooting and less dialogue
Hey, just wanted to say thanks for making these write-ups on the comments of each video! It's really fun to get to read the thought-process behind game-design from the author themselves.
@@Mat0s-316no problem! I love watching playthroughs and reading feedback to my mods A big inspiration to this mod was seeing several other mods use the same critiques of the NCR as the base game but not really tackling a lot of the deeper issues of falling back to the old economic systems of the pre war world. A driving theme of New Vegas from my reading is an obsession with the past. The NCR and House looking to pre war America and The Legion looking to the Roman Empire. The intention of this mod was for people to read it in one of two ways: is Hosea looking to the past too looking at failed “socialist” regimes like the Soviet Union or is he trying to forge a new path? I tried to let the player answer that question themselves even though I personally wrote it intending the latter
To be fair, that kid wouldn't be safe with Zach. She'd either be taken on many adventures where she gets shot at or she'd be abandoned with the rest of his followers
You know with all the mod authors making former follower members antagonist against the NCR, I'm starting to think the Followers are more effective as a guerilla training organization than a healthcare organization.
Mike saying they’ve been doing this for seven years was a massive slap in the face to me, I started watching in middle school super early into nv multiplayer and now I’m out of school and looking for full time work… damn(still the best channel on UA-cam)
Middle school… damn I’m getting old. I would measure my time spent with Mike and Zach in a different metric. When I started watching them I only had two sons. I’m just about to have my 5th and 6th any week now!
Yeah, as much as people want to share their own personal epiphany from a game it's best to leave that to lore books and stuff because forcing it down somebody's throat through long dialogue is just surreal, and it detracts from the gameplay. Especially when the characters dialogues are 1:1 with what's actually going on. Feels less like a character having any real morals and that the narrator is just talking to you dressed as an npc.
And the voice acting is professional quality. There isn't background noise like with most mods and I've only heard one peak when the Ranger screamed "WHAT?!" This mod is really well done
Ah, I remember Race to the Bottom. Great mod! Loved every minute of it when I did my run. Ella got her revenge in the end, I made sure of that! Can't wait to see what you guys end up doing
I ought to try out the mod or at least look up a full excerpt of Hosea's speech. Cause it sounded like it was at the very least, a coherent ideology and not just a bunch of buzzword spam. Which, given the track record of NV mods that think they have something to say, is pretty damn refreshing.
Hosea's complete speech is almost a transparent analysis of (occidental/american) politics adapted to the NCR. He is relatable, but may not use the right method.
When the old guy's speech came around I immediately started thinking of another old man, Grumpos from Anachronox, and his Yammer ability which was just spouting drivel to stun targets. I was half expecting another smash cut to black and Zach waking up naked again.
Something that's been slowly getting to me in these mods, and I guess the fallout community in general (or the vocal and newer part at least), is how dirty the followers get done. They're often either dead because they got in over their heads, or they're preachy and holier than thou do nothings that waste your time and never leave home (it's like people see they're in the Old Mormon Fort and think that means they're religious, not that they picked a defensible location with a FORTified door, and that they're all armed with energy weapons). The Followers are an ideology that have lasted since game one, even if by New Vegas the NCR is trying to drive them out, it's only because they have been wildly successful in what they set out to do, spread useful knowledge to the inhabitants of the wasteland. They founded the wastelands first and only university, and taught real practical lessons on how to survive and build new societies. Are they a major power? No, and that's not what they are. They are an ideology, one that is rooted entirely in practicality, not sophism, nor theology. Anyway, that's my rant. Good vid guys, Mike, you as usual have a talent for finding mods worth showcasing, any thoughts on what other games you'd like to give the Burnfire treatment to?
To be fair, they get done dirty by the canon. The Followers get overwhelmed or chased out of the Mojave unless they ""sell out"" to NCR, and the Follower companion gets either disillusioned, enslaved, imprisoned for sins of his father, and/or murdered.
@@barthvader95not really selling out as much as helping the NCR because your charcater convinced them to take a side. Even then they have all the right to do so since Caeser has kill on sight orders for followers

The edit of Hosea's monologue is hilarious, but I particularly enjoyed this comment: Hosea: "And remember, my door is always open." Mike: "Oh good, then we can leave."
The lyric "The Lake it is said, never gives up her dead" in the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is also a reference to the mummified bodies of Lake Superior. Since the Lake is freshwater and cold as hell, the bodies never decompose and it makes retrieval of the bodies extremely difficult.

I knew he was gonna have a long babbling dialogue of some BS when he looks 75 years old and hates the republic. Pretty much the "Old man yells at clouds meme"
The intention with the gang’s initial attack was to run Hawthorne out of town but with Ella sending mercs after the gang to retrieve her money, Hosea kills Ella to protect his people. This backfires on Hosea as he doesn’t realise the father Jack is onto him with an NCR Ranger in his pocket. This is included in dialogue not shown in the video.
A common issue with mod missions is either too much cursing, and talking way too much without saying anything at all. Jackie does none of the former and too much of the latter.
You can ask Hosea and he will tell you it is because Ella sent mercs after the gang (ie you and Frank) therefore he killed her to prevent harm from coming to his people. He initially wanted her to skip town hence the initial robbery thinking she’d run home with her tail between her legs. After this backfired, with Hawthorne not being intimidated, he and the gang killed her for the aforementioned reason. He also hoped to also use it as inspiration for the people of Vegas to join his gang and fight back much like armed insurgent groups in the real world. This however was a short sighted decision which leads into the NCR stepping up their manhunt. This line of dialogue was not included in the video but can be asked in game if you play yourself
I'll say this, it's pretty well established in the base game that the NCR is getting their shit kicked in by the Legion. The NCR will lose the Dam without Player intervention.
