- While helicopter parenting may be resulting from Singapore families choosing to have fewer kids, mum Serena Ong and dad Kai Keong are challenging their 5-year-old son, Nathanael, to be more independent. He is tasked to take his dad’s laptop from their home in Simei to dad’s office in Marina One all by himself.
#OnTheRedDot’s new series “Old Enough!” is adapted from the popular long-running series from Japan’s Nippon Television Network Corporation (Nippon TV) and showcases 9 determined preschoolers overcoming their fears and running errands on their own for the very first time.

@Peter R De Vries I'll assume you've only been to touristic places. Outside those 3 or 4 places it's really dangerous.
Also, that's possible in Singapore. Reliable train, proper footpath, helpful desk service, safe community.
Try that in Malaysia, the kid will enter another country by then.
MsBear1122 true😂
Here in Japan it is customary for us to send children out on their own, as they have to go to school by themselves when they enter primary school.
The kid may enter Singapore, because it’s neighboring with Singapore.
@Ben Chu I think he’s talking about the Malaysia part. The commenter said that the kid might enter another country(basically human trafficking) and it might be Singapore cuz it’s our neighbour. Quite ez to get here

I have a feeling the little boy knows the cameraman is accompanying him, hence the drastic change in confidence to finally make the trip to his dad's office. Kudos to him though as he is after all, a brave, candid, resourceful and happy little kid.
In the full episode you see he actually has a meltdown at home during which the mom points out that if dad doesn't get his laptop, the family can't go to Legoland the next day (as dad will need to catch up on work). The allure of Legoland plus the agreement that mom will follow him to the bus stop is what pushes him to finally head out.

I actually remembered my own experience when I was only 5 years old. I was waiying for my dad to fetch me that day but I thought I was impatient so that I couraged myself to go home alone. Like this kid, I was singing while walking along the railside. Luckily, most of the people there noticed me and known my father. They never held me home but I think that they just keep an eye on me so that I can go home safely. My mom felt anxious and frightened when she saw me downstairs.. asking me “who’s with you?” “Only myself. Papa didn’t fetch me.” She hugged me like there’s no tomorrow. I never forget about that day. I thought because of that, I can handle things independently.

@@97AshleyRose Yeah I know. I have nothing against americans but the country is in a bad state right now. Send a black kid on the train and the police will gun him down. I'm not saying all the time, but you here stories like this a lot.
my second cousins were shopping and using the microwave to cook at 5, i still don't know if that is good or not, lol.
I did this every week when I was 5 or 6. My parents had to work halfday on Saturday and being me, I am just so bored. So I took the bus and MRT from AMK to Pasir Ris by myself. The first time I did it, my parents cant believe me. I literally steal my dad's ezlini card (sorry dad, RIP). I left the house at 11.30am, so by the time my mother is home around 12.15pm, I didnt arrive at Pasir Ris yet. So she was so damn scared. I walked around quite a bit and I remember being helped by an old auntie in City Hall station. God bless you auntie. Only when I arrive in Pasir Ris, my grandma call AMK and told my mother, that I arrived, alone. I got the spanking of my life but also the deepest hug. The next weekend, and the other weekend and the rest of the other weekend, I just go out to Pasir Ris alone. 😁
That being said, it is super safe in Singapore. My mother always told me that, just ask people if you dont know anything. 11 out of 10 people will help. 😊
And the kid in this video, he is just adorable. I do believe kids should be taught to travel alone. But not to the northern suburbs. 😓 Sorry, I have nothing against Yishun, Sembawang or Woodlands. But ....... 😁 Just sorry.
Hmm i understand Yishun but why Woodlands and Sembawang?

Congratulate Lee Kuan Yew the great. The father of Singapore. This great man dared to gift the world not only a land of treasure but also great leaders and followers.
Great discipline is set as an example by the great leader. This concept is practically replicated to the nation. They uphold the values of conduct and trained to be ashmed of being weired, while proud of being humble.
This is the benchmark of every human in singaporean nationality .
They are proud of nation, country and self.
We salute you all. Keep up good work...Boleh Singapore...
Brave kid! very polite and good manners. Parents should be rly proud
Cute. Lucky a production crew followed him to keep him safe and that no paedophiles snatched him up. It isn't worth it to send a child this young, alone, on a journey so far without a hidden support team. The results may end poorly. It is better to do local tasks/journey and just shadow them without them knowing at first.
it's Singapore. It's safe.
@@tonyprovideo Things do happen here. We should never be complacent. If things never happen, why have police? There are paedophiles here. There are cases of sexual of abuse. There is rape. Not everything is on CNA.
@@AbandonedNomad actually rape occurs more with people that you know then that you don't know but I do get where you're coming from. I would actually let my kids do errands on their own but shadow them yes. That being said, Singapore is also a place with a lot of cameras etc and people are generally law abiding. This is really possible in Singapore. My nephew is 6 and goes home from school riding mrt and bus. but only 2 stops of mrt and 1 stop bus, mostly he just walk from mrt to the house. Also my neighbor who has 2 year old kid can just cross the streets by herself without worries. Drivers in Singapore has the highest respect to pedestrians, that I can attest and its really safe. We also have soft spot for kids so we as adults has instinct to help a child when we see one wandering.
