- In this video I react to and go through the concepts that Derek Trucks is using in his solo on The Sky is Crying with the Tedeschi Trucks Band. I’ve noticed when he does a volume swell at the start of a vocal run lick he doesn’t have any right hand muting (to start) but the other strings aren’t ringing out. Noticed you’re able to do that too but it sounds horrible when I try this 😂What am I missing here?

Great question Nick. It's difficult because you need to mute all of the other strings almost immediately after you start moving the slide to dampen the unwanted noise. So you can try to minimize moving the slide while your right hand isn't muting. IMO, It comes down to minimizing the time it takes to move your hand from the volume knob back to the strings
