- Good ol' Shin Megami Tensei. So what's up with demon races? Night? Lady? Jirae? Today we're taking a relaxed look at what each of these classifications mean - and maybe learn a little bit about some of the demons in each category along the way.

Your categories are great.. but not entirely right. A lot of it comes down to alignment. The difference between Beast and Wilder isn't cats or dogs, it's Neutal-Neutral and Dark-Neutral. Beasts are thinking animals with enough intellect to at least be pets (which is why there are a lot of cats and dogs), Wilders are vicious wild animals that won't be tamed. Holy is also included here as Light-Neutral. They're heavenly mounts and sacred beasts. This can also be done with Avian/Flight/Raptor and all the other races. Jirae is also off. They're not Asian fairies, they're earth spirits, hence why you'll also find things like Knockers and Titan in it in other SMT games. Foul are meant to be like... malevolent and insane. They don't really use it much anymore, which is sad cos it had some great ones in the past. :p Yoma are neutral servant spirits. They sometimes serve gods, or sometimes man. They're dancers in the halls of the gods, minor messenger dieties, or geanies in bottles. Fiends are the heralds of death. They're not evil, but they are all associated with coming death rather than death itself. If you wonder why Alice is there, it's cos of her story role in SMTII.

I also agree that the categories were a bit thrown off because they were missing alignment, but some of the video's points were pretty good.
They almost got the Megami and Lady relationship (sans alignment), although I wished they had noted that Megami were often the female counterpart or spouses of Deity. And for the cats and dogs things, they're on the right track, just in the slight off direction: Avians are the bird counterparts to the terrestrial Holy, both being Law-aligned sacred beasts. Same for Flight and Beast, Raptors and Wilder.
And the point about Orobas being done dirty is totally valid. They had Fallen in this game and they just shoved him in the Beast race for...what?
Out of the new demons in SMT V, I've been loving the designs of Artemis and Amenazako. Also, that new "spoiler" demon you mentioned; love the contrast on it with the one character in particular
Foul was more interesting in other SMTs where they also put demons based on human crimes and criminals, such as the Night Stalker, Urban Terror, and most infamous representative Jack the Ripper. Alot of human enemies like the punks also fall in this category
Another amazing vid. You should try playing the rest of the smt games. Smt iv, ii, and dds are very mythology heavy. Like heavy religious themes and references to old mythologies. DDS draws heavy inspiration and themes from Hindu mythology.
Found this vid and Im geeking out that someone is into the classification in SMT as I am. The classifications in Japanese are a lot easier to understand the minute differences. For example, its hard to understand Dargon, Drake, and Snake at a glance bu in japamese they are literally translated to "Dragon God", " Evil Dragon", and "Dragon King". So it makes sense why Hydra is a Drake yet Orochi is a Snake despite both being multi headed snake creatures. I really like your research into this and it reignited my interest in this classification
All charismatic aside, the foul race can be depicted with as being related to aliens, or D&D. I will justify that SMT V does not give this race any justice.
As a SMT fan I would wager that the Foul is one of my favourite archetypes. Rather the Foul race isn't only being related to slimes or extraterrestrials, rather humans turning into demons on earth who cause malice and miserably.

specifically, Kunitsu are the japanese "earthly gods" as compared to the "Amatsu" or heavenly gods
also, Cu Chulainn is "Koo-Hoo-Lan"

I would assume Orobas got put in Beast race only cause Fallen has so many demons already
Fascinating video. Another thing to consider is that each race typically falls under a consistent Alignment. (Though some races have their Alignment changed, like how Megami's have always been Light-Law, but in SMT V, they're Light-Neutral)

Also Alice is based on both Alice in Wonderland and the story of powerful psychic girl who died and became a ghost.
I'm going to be real I think Demeter's new design is over hated. Her design is great imo, but I get why people don't really like Doi's version of given he made Demeter that way specifically because he didn't want her to look like a generic mother goddess and at the time he wanted people purposely be confused about her aliment, he wanted to do his own spin/take on her which I respect.
hey! uh i know this is a bit late but i love your work and i wanted to ask you would you like to do a reverse evolution video on subnautica below zero? because many creatures in the cold biomes have colsely related counterparts from the original game and i think it would be interesting
No such thing as too late! Thanks so much, and that's definitely something I want to do at some point! It's more or less a matter of finishing some other projects I have on my plate and then making time to play Below Zero. It might take some time, but what you're requesting is a video I absolutely intend to make in the future :)
I am SO glad I ran into this video. I've been playing the game, currently about 60hrs in and have yet to finish it. A few weeks ago I was thinking about how the Races are always a thing in SMT, and was wondering what the race categories meant
