- Maria Gomez-Perez lives with her father, Andres Gomez, and cousin, Ricky, in Gainesville, Georgia. Maria's mother is not involved in her life.
On the morning of her disappearance, Andres leaves the house at 10 AM, assuming Maria is still asleep. He says goodbye to his nephew, Ricky, and heads out. When Gomez returns home that evening, Maria doesn’t greet him at the door. Concerned, he knocks on her bedroom door, only to find that his daughter is missing. The family frantically contacts neighbors and friends in search of her. Maria is reported missing.
Nearly two months later, the case takes a turn. Maria contacts her father via Facebook Messenger. Investigators trace the IP address and manage to locate the device. Maria is found with 34-year-old Antonio Augustin, a Guatemalan native living in northeastern Ohio. Police believe Maria had been communicating with Augustin online for some time.

One night while my brother in law, ( a Chicago Police Homicide Investigator at the time, now retired) was waiting for the Marine patrol to retrieve two bodies found floating in a harbor when a reporter came running up with a phone in his hand, gushing I've contacted their relatives! Would you like to talk to them? ( it turned out that the remains of two elderly people a husband and wife who were both terminally ill with the wife being confined to a wheelchair, they had chosen to die together leaving their car as the only vehicle in a nearby lot, the reporter had taken it on himself to somehow run the plate and assuming the owner of the car was one of the victims had contacted the relatives) my furious brother in law sent that phone into the middle of the harbor, when the reporter filed a complaint it was he who found himself in hot water as he got charged with interfering in a police investigation, misuse of official resources, and trespassing on city property,( the park was closed as it was the middle of the night) he wound up losing his job.
We need to educate kids in school about predators. It's _that_ serious.

Hi Nancy...I'm an LCSW...this 12 yo has no mother...dad is single dad and has to work so much to care for her...think about this child's perception...they are lonely...feel no one cares maybe...she is prime prey for these people who communicate online with children. She is home. I'm sure she is traumatized from all that has happened to her. Being part of the few who helped with putting out signs, flyers, and ground searches, we are happy she's home. However, her life has changed tremendously due to what has happened to her. I'm sure. Just keep praying.

Firt time I was sexually harassed I was 8 so at that point I was aware of creeps and predators, then just a couple of years later I got into true crime, secretly watching tons of true crime videos, I was obsessed (still am lol) but this sh*t kept me safe, more than any lesson from my parents. I have a 12 year old sister who I warned recently about going to the mall with boys. When I told her about the dangers, she was so shocked when I mentioned sexual assault. After I told her that it has happened to most of my friends, she was extremely shocked and that worries me. These kids have no idea, they think they are invincible.

Parents, All devices connecting to social media must be in the living room, periodtttt. No phones in the bedroom. This is just the beginning. You can't monitor them 24/7, but we can get as close as possible. Help your children get comfortable with the understanding that there is ugly outside and online. I empathize with the parents today.

I agree all de ices need to be in a public communal space but if no one is checking on their history or watching what they are doing the location of device doesn’t stop the messaging only the child taking a picture of themselves. If they have a phone which many many elementary and at least 80%of middle school children have they have unsupervised access whenever they leave the house with it.

Dear Nancy, I know this case in my hometown of Rotterdam. A girl gets missing after leaving school. She was found "safe" in a wellknown hotel just around the corner. The perp was a man (just around my age or older) who flew from the US to the Netherlans to meet her.He was using the online profile of his daughter.

Monitor your children's Internet use, put blocks on certain sites. Speak to your child in layman's terms. In other words, tell them what could happen and yes be graphic. A girl/boy could be rapes,the girl could fall Pregnant. They could be kept as slaves and abused for years and years. The could be murdered. Yes it might scare them but good! Can't wrap children up in cotton wool as there is nothing soft and fluffy about the ways of the world.

Of course I can't speak for all parents, no one can. I work in a child and adolescent behavior hospital. I believe a lot of parents know and tell their children about this. The children just refuse to listen. SMH!!! Children can get on computers at school and do stuff. They can go to a friends house and use the friend's computer. Go to a library and other places where you can just hop on a computer. Also, sometimes, kids get "secret" phones to use. I'm not excusing parents. But children find ways to "do stuff". Long time ago, kids would sneak out of the house, out of the window without the parents knowing. Some people are just too crafty for their own good.

Nancy, i did the parental controls, asked the kids who they were playing with, i would drop in and say something to prompt a response from the other players so i could hear or try to discern how old the others sounded-my kids are adults now and they have told me they still saw things they should not have seen. They were both still approached, one online the other walking down the street-but-they told me because we talked about those kinds of people and their sick tactics they didn't fall for it. I hated HATED that i needed to talk to my children about 'bad guys' but praise God i did.

She was found at Walmart in New Philadelphia Ohio.The town next to me. They had left the Dover pool and he was caught at Walmart. This is what was reported on our local news. There are illegal Guatemalans everywhere there. They are completely taking over the once nice safe little town. They have Guatemalans stores all over there now. The reason is there is a business close by who hires them so all there friends and families have moved in. It makes me sad and I hate having to go there now.

Children shouldn't be able to play on line games.
Don’t talk like you can’t protect your kids from the internet because you can! It’s called being an active, aware, nosey parent! If your kid wants to play online video games, there are parental controls for that. Same goes for their phones…same goes for their television. It’s a real effort and most parents today just can’t be bothered with the amount of times per week you have to check passwords and history on their computer. You have to live your life like your kids are being stalked by or sought out by predators at all times because they are!!!!!

Yep parenting is key. Years ago when my son was a teen I overheard a man saying weird things. Things I have heard watching crime shows. That creep and his entire community was blocked off my son's devices shortly after. At first he was devastated that I would take away these 'friends'. I had to sit down with him and show him parts of crime stories, show him the grooming words and how they were the same as the ones used on him. He got it, and it confused him so bad, hurt him that men would be like that. He adjusted his views on friends, and now most of his internet friends are his age and have similar personalities. I know because I have met them, they live in my town, and I know their parents. The others I don't have to worry about anymore because he blocks the weirdos himself. He has distance friends but they have for years now displayed normal habits. So kids need intensive parenting if your going to let them have devices, like 10 times more parenting, just to keep up with the changing ways of predators. Personally I wish I had waited another 2-3 years, until he was 18 before I let play on the internet, he didn't understand what was out there. Just so glad I was there every tick of the clock to guide him away from that, and that those creeps didn't get to him. Please be extra vigilant if you let your kids online. Prayers for this little girl, prayers of peace and healing, prayers no one ever hurts her again, prayers to her loved ones. May God's grace lead all our children to safety 🙏✝️🙏
It's crucial for both parents and children to be aware of the dangers of contacting strangers online. Thank God she's been found 😢❤

Glad she’s found but parents needs to monitor who their kids are taking to. Talk to them so they can share with their parents what and who they are talking to. This doesn’t remind me of Maddie Soto but the girl who left her home to go to 7-Eleven at night she made conversation with the killers and where was her mom at home.

That young lady's Mom was asleep. It was 10 pm when they were supposed to go to sleep because she was going to go to work with her Mom the next day. Instead the daughter snuck out of the apartment to go to 7-11 while the Mother was sleeping. She was on the phone with her boyfriend at the 7-11 because he reported hearing male voices in the background. The two men who ended up killing her had pretended they were lost and she was helping them to find there way home. Some kids sneak out at night after their other family members are asleep.

Dads main job is her. She has no mom. Does he Have To work "7 days a week" to pay for a roof and food for 2? I had 2 children and my main goal was to get home as much as possible to keep my kids safe. Went to work fo4 school to be home when they were.
