Vinyl is definitely tricky and has a learning curve to it. I have wrapped 2 cars and learned a whole lot doing my first. One tip I have is your cleaning/prep. You should prep the surface with isopropyl alcohol, including the inside of the doors where you're trying to wrap the vinyl around the edge. Any kind of contamination can cause it to not stick, grease, wax residue etc. You want the surface as clean as possible. There are different types of vinyl. A lot of the automotive vinyl wraps these days are intended to be dry apply, but they have air release channels to help get bubbles out, and are pressure sensitive, so they are somewhat repositionsble until squeegeed down to lock them in place. If it is a wet apply, there are specific solutions to use some as simple as soapy water. Don't give up though, doesn't look like it went too bad. The only way you can learn and get any better is to do it more or just never do it again lol.
Appreciate the awesome feedback! I'll definitely use the alcohol next go around. I was a little hesitant to use the cleaning solution and I think that may have been a cause of the struggle. I want to attempt the roof next but not sure how to get around the sunroof but I think I can get it. Any recommendations on vinyl brand?
@@Smeedia, I used 3m but I honestly don't know that I'd go 3m again. From what I've read Avery is one of the easiest most forgiving brands with a nice smooth finish. I would definitely make sure you have a helper for the roof. It's not 100% necessary, but another set of hands will make it WAY easier to manage a piece that big. I've never wrapped around a sunroof, but my thought would be to just leave it open or partially open so the glass is recessed a little, and either tape down the wind deflector in the front if there is one, or don't open the glass far enough for it to pop up. That way you can tuck the vinyl around the edges. Make sure to post heat any of the edges that you stretch like those inside sunroof corners, but be careful with the heat so you don't burn your sunroof gasket.
@@Smeedia Avery is good easy to use vinyl, but the roof is a big step from the doors. Took me about 3 hours with Vivvid Carbon, alone. Wanted to quit many times, but came out pretty good in then end. Avery probably could have knocked out in an hour, wiat till it gets a little warmer. Tape up the sunroof with painters tape to help the vinyl release and make sure you clean that area well, it's gonna pull in dirt from everywhere.
I wrapped a few things on my 2017 sti and I find that wrapping dry instead of spraying solution is a lot easier! I know all the vinyl that premium supplies has air evacuation channels that make it easy to lay and squeegee out air bubbles, even lift and re-position if you need to. Lay the vinyl down dry, then spray some kind of detailer on top of it to help as a lube when you squeegee so you don’t cause little scratches on the vinyl. Also with this method you only need to add heat when you need to tuck or around corners.
Perfect! Good to know. I'm going to try dry and wet (with soapy water) next time to see if I can get it to stick and lay better. Greatly appreciate the tips and advice!
I feel ya, i still can never get vinyl brand decals to align even or straight...ever. Then get irritated and remove them....then re order. Lol think I spend more money on name brand decals than the legit parts. 😅
I know exactly how you feel. Worked at a sign shop for a month a couple year's back and had to install vynal stickers on oil field worker trucks and that was a mish. Had to perfectly line up the lettering and the lines had to be on point, no bubbles, no creases. Was interesting to learn but you must have lots of patience in order to do this job. Keeping it wet until you want to set it helps too. Its really easy once you get the hang of it. Practice makes perfect!
Next time I try it I'm going to use soapy water rather than a surface cleaner 😅 that may have been my problem but your level of patience has to be high with this 😅
Smeedia exactly. You will find it much easier woth soap and water. Can move easy and use the squeege start from cener work your way outwards. Easy money
Worked at a vinyl shop, many pros dont use any solution to install because of the type adhesive that the wrap has. heat makes life easier. But next time try a dry application for vinyl
I just wrapped my WRX and another WRX, hood scoop, roof, wing, license plate trim, and also tinted the headlights and tail lights. Man what a learning curve, turned out great though!
@@Smeedia Applying vinyl as a dry application and no spray on the back is pretty easy. The hard part is learning how to stretch the vinyl to get it to conform around bends properly. I'm far from a professional, just a dude that love to work on cars and tinker, but I'm beside myself with the results, as well as my first customer. Check out CKWraps if you're interested, I've learned everything from his channel. Extremely talented wrapper and educator; very detailed in explaining and close-ups.
Yo Tanner, hey my name is Aaron I'm a pro detailer in Pittsburgh I dropped a suggestion for you for an exterior protection for your STI. Also just some suggestions in the future when you're wrapping vinyl, yes it's definitely a pain in the ass, your first mistake was cleaning your paint with the Griot's Garage speed shine, that product has slippery polymers in it that aren't going to help the vinyl and it's sticking towards the end of the install. Next time use something like Windex or most preferably just a soapy water solution, Auto soap or host guys use Johnson baby shampoo believe it or not. But when you do your initial clean wipe it using at least 70% ISO alcohol or some kind of wax and grease remover, you'll find this install will go a lot easier. You also should have cleaned the edge of your doors at the bottom and also the inside lip underneath where you folded, it would have stuck especially with heat. To get cleaner lines and remove the wrinkles, as you're applying heat slowly stretch the vinyl over any Kris and use your hand or the squeegee to go over the crease. I know easier said than done but trust me the next time you do something like this take out the speed shine, use alcohol and make sure the entire area that the vinyl is going to touch is clean from any kind of waxes or Greece or anyting that includes spray detailers and spray waxes. Hopefully this helps you in the future oh, but you did a good job for what you used. Also, another tip that really helps is you can work with your piece of vinyl for a very long time just keep it wet and keep the area where you're applying the vinyl wet and you can adjust it however you want as many times as you want just remember to keep it wet, when you finally made your adjustments, begin to squeegee out the water, from one end to another, holding the squeegee completely flat. It does take some finesse, but as long as you know the tips to make it all easier, it might actually start to become enjoyable when you can actually make it look really really nice
Greatly appreciate the tips! My lack of patience is attributed to not doing it properly so on ghr next go around definitely gling to use the knowledge! Figured soeed shine would remove the dirt but did not even think about the residue left over on the surface of the paint

Smeedia if it makes you feel better I was laughing my ass off at some of the shit you were saying while you were frustrated so thanks for that! Thanks for the great content dude.
There is a product called 'rapid tack'(I think) that is great for applying decals/vinyl. I have always used a spray bottle with about a cup of rubbing alcohol, 5-10 drops of dish soap and the rest water. And yes keep it wet until you like where it sits. Start from the middle-ish and work out. This will help to prevent trapping bubbles. If you do get a bubble that won't go away, poke it with a razor blade and work the air/liquid towards the hole you poked. And heat is definitely your friend, but if you get it too hot it will wrinkle and stay wrinkled. And I have never had any luck with the clear rock chip protector decals. I always get dirt or fingerprints in them.
You have more patience than I do my dude. I wanna wrap my STI but there’s no way I’d be able to. I’m leaning more towards dip, like I did my wheels. I wanna protect the obsidian black pearl.
I think you’re using the wrong solution. What you were using is a quick detailer. Pretty sure it has some kind of wax in it. The vinyl premium supplies allows you to mock it up and lift it if needed as long as you don’t squegee it on. I’m about to do mine this week.
I don't use solution. Always dry. Probably should have done a clay especially around the edges and inside the door to help stickment. Not a bad attempt, kudos for the attempt. Only gets easier the more you do it.
