@NoneOfYourBusinesshgdgsbsbsb Me too, but I have thousands of hours of swimming laps, lol. I meant like a lap swimming background. I'm just going to assume you are a beginner.
In order to hold your breath, you'll need two things: first, you will need to know how to relax in the water. If the water gives you no anxiety, or even better, you enjoy being in the waterir submerged, you will not panic and feel the need to breathe nearly as badly. Second, you need to be an efficient swimmer. I can flail my arms and burn all my oxygen without moving, but that's not the goal as the goal is to get from point A to B most of the time.
In order to achieve both of these goals, the #1 thing you need to do is do the time in the pool. It's just like anything new or daunting. After the first few times, it becomes far less intimidating. Start by just getting from one side to the other (freestyle if you know it) even if it's only for a few laps at first.
As you become more comfortable with moving through the water and increase your distance little by little, start to work on your form. Last time I checked, doing 100m on 1 breath was only mildly challenging. That's only because I can move through the water with relative efficiency. Look up plenty of videos on form and try to improve your stroke and fix any issues with it. Better yet, join a swim club with a coach who can easily pick out the parts of your stroke that need improvement.
As you continue to swim, you will naturally become more comfortable in the water. 20 seconds will feel like nothing in now time. At that point in your swimming journey, you should already know what will improve your breath holding capacity, but hypoxic sets and underwaters to the other side will do some good (probably do these two things strictly when someone is watching over you).
Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to ask questions if you need to :)
