Coming back to this after seeing UA just released the new Orion delay. Funny that they have this ep-3 algorithm in three different pedals now. I have a BED but now I am really considering trying to switch to the Orion.
Thanks, dude. And yes - big time. I was super underwhelmed by the Deluxe and regretted selling my OG Belle. Thankfully the Starlight destroyed them both and I soon forgot. I recently sold the Deluxe for next to nothing after it sat dormant for a few years.
It's amazing how unique and aggressive the oscillations are on the true echoplex, but the Starlight is closer than I've heard basically anything else get! Most oscillations just copy analog delay oscillations, and you can tell the manufacturers didn't spend quality time with the real deal.

You won’t regret it. The Memory Man sounds soooo good on it. I have been debating getting another one for months so I could run it and the EP-3 simultaneously but I ended up ordering a Del-Verb. Hoping it sounds even close to as good when it arrives in July.

Weird coincidence - just got the Del-Verb the other day. If you don’t like using your phone with pedals I’d not recommend it as all the other sounds are hidden under the hood in the app, it seems. I’m still using and loving the Starlight. Between the EP-3 and the DMM Vibrato model it is uncannily close and is easy to control without a external device. If something better comes along you’ll see me do a video about it but I still fully endorse the Starlight.

@@BrendanMowatSmith Hey, I'm actually the guy in the original comment (mistakenly commented with another account). Anyway, interesting to hear that you were never quite happy with the BED. I own both the BED and the original BE, and when I first got the BED, I did think its echoes sounded kind of thin and lacking character. However, that's probably because I originally had the Record Level only between 9 o'clock and 11 o'clock. I've since found that keeping the Record Level around 1 o'clock (for my SG with '57 Classic pickups), and the Echo Volume around 9 o'clock or less, gives me more of the tone I have in my head. Also, in case you haven't tried this for medium delay times of ~300-400 ms, I found that bringing the modulation/depth down to somewhere between 7 and 8 o'clock (almost off) actually improved the "feel" of the pedal (versus hearing the more flanger-like, wavy modulation). I'm a huge fan of the Ibanez AD-80 (which doesn't have any modulation, but does have high headroom), so the above settings kind of give me a brighter, clearer version of what I love about the AD-80. Anyway, again, all your stuff is great, particularly your video highlighting the original Belle Epoch against the EP-3 and El Cap. Looking forward to more videos!
Thanks, man. Funny you’d mention that; I settled into a very low record level and high mix too. The feel was never quite there for me, though. Of the three Echoplexes I’ve had, one of them had a really magical hint of compression and a subtle EQ change. The BED had none of those things and the modulation was wonky. It also had all those superfluous other modes I never used and *always* popped when turned on or off. I’m gonna do a comparison video when I get home of the BED, Starlight and Plex when I get home and we’ll see how it stacks up then. 😊 Thanks so much for watching and chiming in.
Hey, please let me know how’s the preamp coloration on the Starlight according to you based on in room number experience? On That Pedal Show UA-cam channel, the demo of this pedal sounded very thin when compared to the Fulltone Tape echo?
Just came across this video when contemplating getting the Dunlop Echoplex.. would you say the starlight is a better buy? It’s around £50 more for the starlight right now.
Yeah, big time. The Starlight actually sounds like an Echoplex. You get the preamp with the UA and the ability to store a preset. You also get the most accurate sounding Memory Man reproduction I’ve ever played. It’s my favourite delay pedal.
Still love it. Perhaps more now. I’ve plugged the BED in a few times since getting the UAFX only to immediately take it out. The Starlight just ruthlessly destroys it and the DMM model on it is incredible too.
You think I’d steer you in the wrong direction? 😏 The tape splices are just so cool. The EP-3 gets lonely because of the Starlight. The DMM is Amazing too, eh? Enjoy, dude!

The Strat with a string tree has two stock Fender pickups and an HS-2 in the bridge which is how it came but my older EJ Strat without a tree got switched out for Dimarzio humbuckers years ago to quell noise at bar gigs. This is the former.

Next time I change the volume pot in my old one I will try a 500! I think this offset wood does impart a lot of characteristics, though.

The Starlight is the closest pedal to the EP-3, imho. You can get an actual Echoplex for less than a Fulltone, it seems.
