I dont think your upbringing and "privilege" or lack thereof has any correlation with selling drugs. Now, let me be clear, there is a big difference between being a mid-high level drug dealer and a gangbanger. Believe it or not most mid-high level drug dealers are rarely major gang members. The reason is the suppliers and high level drug dealers will not deal with them because they are not smart and untrustworthy. Instead, high level drug dealers sell to larger drug dealers who also usually come from middle class and up households in an area and that process goes a few more levels before it actually hits the retail street (gang level). There are always people who want to take a short cut to easy money and upbringing does not stop everyone from going the square route. Let's be clear, high level drug dealers are rarely in the streets having turf wars. They are responsible for planning shipments and routing drug deliveries and you usually would never know these people are drug dealers because many are not street people. I was a US prosecutor for decades and can tell you first hand not to believe movies about only poor, street people being major drug traffickers.
