Thanks for the explanation. Interesting stuff. I presumed it was a chemical reaction but it makes perfect sense now. I like the hot oil/boiling water analogy. Really helped.

Glad you liked it, it only occurred to me that it was the same as the hot oi/boiling water after I had watched the footage a few times. It's remarkably similar. Thanks for watching!

Another common BLEVE is super-heated water under oil, as one would get should water or ice be introduced to a deep fryer before the oil has heated up to over 100˚C. The liquid water sinks to the bottom, where the pressure of the oil keeps it from boiling well past 100˚C, until the oil is disturbed and the water instantly turns to steam, throwing oil in the air.

BLEVEs are particularly hazardous to firefighting personnel, who can be suddenly scalded at distance without the presence of nearby flame, in the cases of water tanks, pipe work, or boilers breaching due to fire. Just a litre of super-heated water turns into 1700 litres of scalding steam A BLEVE of only 6 litres of water could completely fill a 10m (32') cubic room room with scalding steam.

I've seen a steam pipe with some condensate opened on an industrial oven and it is extremely violent. I would love to film it in high speed but there is no practical safe way to do so. Thanks for the tip on the name for this phenomena!

Have you had any issues with your GoPro Session? Mine has been nothing but trouble for the last two weeks.
Also, i wonder if one could make a cartridge that uses a small BLEVE for propellant. Maybe lock down the bullet and heat the cartridge to 300C or something. When you pull the trigger, the bullet is released.

I don't use the session too much but the 2 button interface is a real pain. I usually set it up with wifi, turn wifi off to save batteries and then start it by the buttons.
Have you ever seen NASA's light gas guns? They use compressed helium behind a disk that gets ruptured allowing it to escape and propel simulated space debris. You could probably use a similar setup to make a BLEVE cannon but using a heavy gas limits the max projectile speed. I'm not sure of the mechanism but NASA uses helium specifically to get the highest speeds possible.

+Austin Nguyen I didn't go to university and my day job is as an industrial electrician. I fix a blast furnace and automated line equipment.
