Can confirm that having my double BBM’s (Jude Bellingham and Andre Anderson) with try killer balls and tries long range passes works really well with my fast strikers running behind the opposition defence. They get so many assists like this

Another useful tip for player traits, especially for younger players, is to have them mentored by players who already have the trait. In my experiences, mentoring accelerates the process of learning new traits. However, be mindful that the mentors may also pass on traits that you may not want on a young player. There's no way to be selective about which traits are passed on through mentoring, but if your young player is also training to learn the trait, then they'll be more inclined to learn the trait you want from their mentor.
In my Levante save, one of my team leaders had "tries tricks," and he passed it to the entire mentor group. (Rochina, I believe, had it.) Basically it shows up as players "ghosting" defenders when they dribble more often. You don't see any fancy Ronaldo step-overs. But they do seem more likely to either beat defenders clean, or draw rash challenges. It's not a trait I would actively train. But if you have someone in your squad who does this, it seems easier than one would think to get it in mentoring.
I know this is super old, but I had one player with this trait (he also had obviously high dribbling but also very high flair). He was really good at one on ones but more important he was responsible for sending off players because of red cards like non stop, lmao.
I've only watched a few videos at the moment, way late I know but you're very informative and you seem to respond to A LOT of questions in the comments (it's much appreciated and very rare)! You sir, have earned a sub!
Please do this series, I’m an MLS (LAFC) fan whose just picked up FM2020 as their first ever FM after having just gotten into soccer in 2018. Watching you has already helped a lot.
i take it you are talking about football.. the right kind played with the feet :-) he he J/K..... anyway welcome to the football community , may you have many fun and frustrating hours in this lovely game
@@Galantus1964 The word 'soccer' was common in the UK in the 19th century and used by some people much more recently. Rugby football ('rugger') and Association football ('assoccer' shortened to 'soccer'). I have met public school educated Brits in the past who used 'rugger' and 'soccer'. 'Americanisms' which we tend to think of as being new inventions are often actually archaic British usage.
Try to go around keeper in one on one, tries long range free kicks and tries to play one-twos are my favorite traits in this version of FM. Trying to round keeper improves goalscoring in Advanced Forwards by a lot, long range free kicks are a thing of beauty if you have the right player and one-twos are very good with more attacking midfield roles like Mezzala-A.
Do FM academy on each and every role. Their movements, strengths, weaknesses, attributes needed for each and more importantly how they combine with other roles to make a good tactic in certain mentalities.
I've just RECENTLY got into FM and I'm hooked. Trying to figure out how to play is how I found your videos and I watch ALL of them. If you haven't done the "Academy" idea- PLEASE DO IT!!
Yeah great vid Player traits one of the most important things to getting the most from ur player. every year I hear this from the creators mouth himself Miles Jacobson when he talks in live vids when the beta is running. Can’t emphasise how much he stresses it’s written into the game and programming massively effective. Hope this helps someone out.
Bro, easy 'American' explanation for the 1-2... which I didn't know until you tried to explain it. Basketball is now a pretty universal sport... so a 1-2 is the concept of the Give and Go. I pass to you (I give), I break to the goal (I go), you pass it back to me. And for Euro, where Big Men are astoundingly good passes, this concept travels well. Because Europeans have been keen on Give and Go since Vlade Divac days.
interesting vid thanks! As for the tries skills and tricks the last one movement you mentioned no its not new actually is very old but they removed it.in FM 2006 you can see jay-jay okotcha having this when he played for Bolton. cheers
Great info.. and plz make that academy series... eventhough i have quite some hours sunk into FM19 and now 20 i still learn a ton of stuff from you videos.
Not sure if you have already video about training with additional focuses for the players. You know, when to use it,. How much to use it. For younger players or older players. Or when there is lot´s of games, like 2 games in a week, so should you just training with normal player position, or add also additional focuses. Thanks, your videos been fantastic.
Hey Champ!! absolutely loving the vids!!!! thank you! just recently bought FM20 so these are very helpful! QUESTION.....You mention 'very good finisher' etc etc what does a very good finisher (or other player attributes) look like in attribute terms from 1-20???
I always thought that sliding into tackles suits players who DON'T have good strength. I mean, if you're doing a challenge standing up, you need strength to bump the player off the ball, but if you make a slide tackle, you don't need strength, just good timing (tackling, anticipation, bravery). When I used to play football IRL I did a ton of slide tackles and I was and still am far from a big or a powerful guy.
What happens when a trait is in conflict with a condition of a role? Examples: My CM has a trait of gets forward when possible but I want to play him as a DLP which has holds position. Also a STC has a trait of plays with back to goal but I wish to play him as an AF which has gets forward. In both cases, the DLP and AF are their best and preferred position. Does the trait override the role’s condition? Or vice versa?
Hey, loving your videos covering a wide range of FM topics. Was wondering if you could do a video on Mentoring? I've seen different opinions on how to use it like throwing a load of youngsters together with one good pro, or using it to develop lines of the tactics screen. Would be interesting to hear your findings.
Fine vid, but i felt like it was mostly just explaining what a trait does.. but what about the more advanced stuff? Like how does it function vs a player role and player instructions? Take long passes.. Seems like its way more flexible to have no traits on any player and control how long/direct their passes are via the shot/direct passing wheel on the player instructions. Why would i ever want a static trait when i can configure it flexibly via tactics?
I almost never bother with traits, because it seems like the tactic you're playing takes care of the same things. Like if I'm playing an inside forward, he's going to cut inside whether he has the trait for it or not, so what's the point of the trait? Same with wingers, they always hug the touchline and run with the ball. The only thing traits do in my experience is mess up tactics when a player has a contradictory trait to what the tactic is telling him to do.
Love your videos help me a lot Iv recently started playing again not played it scince before it was called football manager so alot has changed scince I last played it n still trien to learn the basics 😂👍
Yeah the Academy would be good. If you get time can you do a video on developing players training, units, mentoring How you know it's working What to look out for Regards
FM Base what I mean more specifically is what is more important...having the right role for your tactic? or having a player be 100% comfortable with the role in your tactic and changing it to suit them??
Mostly tacking and decision making, no teamwork needed. If an opposition player is fast and is about to dribble past you, you can counter that by slide tackling. You obviously don't want to be the last man because if you miss it'll be one on one, and I don't think the game counts how may team mates are behind you, they'll just do it if they think they can succeed. You also don't want to get carded or give away a penalty. So giving it to a defender is definitely risky, plus they already do it anyway when they see fit, so just leave it to them. Midfielders and attackers will usually just let the player through if they can't keep up, so giving it to them increases your defensive aggression higher up, but then again beware of cards. Also I've seen midfielders plenty of times being the last man and have dive into tackles, because I tell them to stay back during free kicks, so they will happily tackle.... and miss.... sometimes, it's actually a little annoying but they do succeed a lot too. My full backs are too slow so I still use it.
I’m doing a Spanish league online double love to see a video on the best way to deal with ur younger players in relation to which squad is best for them to be in. U19’s or b team. We’ve found our b teams/Castilla sides have no competition fixtures like they used to. Couldn’t find a way to change this. So b team became pointless. Need help!!!
I've always been wondering what exactly "current ability" is. I mean, beside the stars I remember checking the exact value on tools like FM Scout. What I've never understood is what that value actually represents since it could be edited independently from the others. A player with 20 dribbling, composure and finishing but low CA is still going to be good at dribbling and scoring?
Yes, current ability is pretty much the summary of all stats combined (unless I’m much mistaken) if he has high stats in dribbling, composure and finishing but low CA it’s because he has weak other stats.
Great video! I have a question though; I've read that getting a player to learn a trait will lessen their overall potential ability. Have you found any truth to that claim?
Traits DO add to the Current Ability (CA) value (as do positions a player can play in f.e.), but they don't lessen the Potential Ability (PA) value (injury prone players might have their PA reduced over time and many injuries, but I'm not 100% sure about that). So especially in lower leagues be careful with traits (and additional positions). Ever wondered why your 5* potential player with multiple traits and multiple positions playable has much worse attributes than your 3* one-trick-pony? That's why.
Im to lazy..usually..ask the coach to pick the trait for me 🤣.. doesnt help tho..if u had a direct tactic and ur midfielder have hogging the ball too long traitsssss..
