  • Graham returns to Derry and Toms to pick up the chat regarding another Uncosy Catastrophe, on this occasion recommended by listener Paul Miles... 1985's The Fungus by Harry Adam Knight, a book that somehow passed us by despite being firmly in our wheelhouse.
Exploding landlords, extremely poor mission personnel choices, sweaty liaisons and deeply unfortunate children await in this tale of an England overwhelmed by scientifically boosted mycelium.

Thank you! We always enjoy looking at these books. And The Fungus was entirely new to me.

Hi chaps. Really enjoyed this, a great listen. I could be mis-remembering some of the specifics here, but I'm sure that one of HAK's books (possibly Carnosaur) had a quote on the front saying something to the effect of, "The New Stephen King!" ...with the quote attributed to Starburst magazine. The *actual* quote was, of course, from John Brosnan himself in his excellent, "It's Only A Movie" column in the magazine where he'd written something like, "I might describe Harry Adam Knight as the new Stephen King ...after having had several whiskys just before falling off my barstool." Happy days.

@@breakfastintheruinspodcast I 'borrowed' it today from Internet Archive and read in about 90 minutes. A lot of native legend packed in reminiscent of Manitou. It dates itself a little in certain areas but no irrelevant bonking, moist triangles or quivering thighs in sight!
