    I just did this exact same thing. I found a 50' cord with similar damage in a dumpster at a commercial renovation I was at. Guy I was working with thought I was crazy for taking it but now I have a free 40' cord and 10' cord (already had a spare plug and outlet on hand)

    If you keep a long extension cable on a reel like that, start winding it on the reel at the female end. The exposed end is the male end which gets plugged into the outlet. That way when you use the reel, you plug in the cable and remove only the length of cable required to reach the tool you're using. The rest of the cable stays on the reel. Makes life much simpler.

    Friendly pro-tip, put a bunch of dielectric grease on the stripped wire where it goes into the terminals. Will prevent corrosion from water getting in (and potentially shocks).
