Adam Savage’s Tested Adam when you watch the slow-mo at 18:42 do you see how every other ping pong ball is hitting the one in front of it? I guess from the one behind it taking the most of the force it's still accelerating while the one in front is slowing down, is there any way that can be avoided? Please Adam I know you can come up with an answer/solutions. I've built this to my best capabilities but my accuracy is pretty much nonexistent past two feet
i want a live mythbusters reunion with you saying 'mythbusters assemble!' and you and jamie hugging and tori tripping on jamie's vodka, Grant riding a taun taun and kari bringing thermite to see how it burns (again). You watch old mythbusters episodes with Tori flinching at seeing him trip over and over again, Grant doubting his new life, you with jamie building some sort of cannon and kari jumping in despair
Tested was started by Will Smith and Norman Chan, and Adam and Jamie joined a bit later on. It has nothing to do with with mythbusters or discovery channel. It's basically talk about science and diong fun build projects. Also Kari, Tori and Grant are not a part of Tested. KGT appear on a Netflix show called "White Rabbit Project" if you want to see more of them. :)
Yeah, but Adam seems more like a bundle of enthusiasm and joy instead of passionately insane like Doc was. Not that it would change my mind about going along.
“I need to cover the top...” Love Adam’s reaction to his own stupidity here. If that was me I’d cuss myself out like crazy. Something more to aspire to.
I have so much respect for Adam. He is one of the few wealthy and/or famous people, that I am aware of anyway, that uses his money purely to have an amazing shop and to fulfill his hobbies. Don't get me wrong from the inside of his home it's extremely nice but you can tell he doesn't give a shit about all the bullshit of "look at my 10 Lamborghinis in my multi million dollar mansions." He just wants to be able to make things and not worry about if he has the tools or materials to do so. What I am trying to say in a less convoluted way, is that even if he wasn't as wealthy as he is now, he would still have a shop, just maybe smaller and maybe take longer to get to the level he is at now. The only difference that money and fame has afforded him is to reach this level faster.
well, if the tube with the ping pong balls was angled, lets say 45 degrees back, the balls would auto load and you wouldn't need to cover the top of it, there is a phisics property that i can't remember the name of, it causes a stream of air to suck from a tube placed in a similar fashion than to what i described
Julio Brazil yeah simple physics, just entrainment based on Bernoulli's principle, basically using high fluid speed to create low pressures which could be used in this application to draw the balls
Yea I think that is the proper way of doing it. I believe another way of achieving the same goal is to put a lip behind the magazine inside the main firing tube.
Using the bleed air to push the ammo from the magazine you could essentially make the magazine as long and as shaped as you wanted to in any orientation, parallel to the barrel, spiraling around the barrel, etc.
Dylan Raymond It was a quick build.. hence the auxillary air tube was overly long (cut quickly). And the dumb mistake of not considering if the balls might go up and out. I reckon that he would have spent the better part of a full day thus far.
I was thinking about it and yeah, it would be good to get a hose that ping pong balls could fit in and then you could just fill it full and wrap it for maximum ammo storage. I'd also want to tweak just how fast they are firing out... some type of regulator to allow for maximum pressure and spacing of the shots. I could see some of the balls shot out faster than others and were literally hitting the slower ping pong balls mid-air.
+Bin al-Flecki: You mean literally like a turbocharger? Where exhaust turns a turbine? Not seeing how that could be useful when you could just use bleed air like Adam is already doing. The appropriate analogy is stuff in aviation powered by bleed air from the jet engines / turbines.
Yeah saw it coming from a mile away (well, when he had to cover the top of the adapter to get the test shot to go). I suspect he did it on purpose for our own entertainment, though.
Gadget Addict well depending on the plastic, one could recycle the shavings. Though would require a shavings collection system. Problem often with 3D prints specially extruded plastic ones is strength. Specially delaminating. Print it too weak or wrong material, it cools wrong, the barrel might straight shot off, when adapter delaminates. Probably not under this since it is only blower and not a pressure system.
Adam has had the enthusiasm of a child for over 20 years now. He's not changed a bit since MythBusters,. He acts the exact same way whether he's on TV, this channel, or at fan events. And it's just obviously not an act. You can tell he genuinely loves this stuff and has a love and curiosity for basically everything in the world. Wish I had the same enthusiasm and outlook.
Seriously my favorite video on UA-cam right now. Thank you so much for remaining a kid. I take myself way too seriously and you show me how relaxing it is to be around someone who doesn’t and is able to joke around. You’re awesome man.
14:55 had me dying. What I love about Adam is he's not afraid to film malfunctions, it makes him real. He's a builder and inventor, things don't always go the way we intend but that's part of making new things! Plus it's funny to see someone else feeling sort of dumb with a build. I have felt that way many a time!
I worked in a hardware store for two years. The B+D tools were always complete garbage, so they always got returned with broken or missing parts or just unusable from how poorly they were made. Avoid the brand if you want a usable tool.
Projects like this are WAY more fun if they DO NOT work perfectly on the first try. Great ideas do not happen instantaneously, you kind of have to sneak up on them. (I speak from lots of previous experience.)
Hello Adam. If you are using air pressure to feed the ammo, you no longer need gravity. Why not try mounting the feed tube underneath the barrel, like the magazine of a shotgun and use a Ubend to attach to your feed slot at the breach end. It would be compact, easier to reload, easier to handle, and the air would feed the ammo rather than gravity. You can also put the air tube into a bung that would both feed air, and cap the end of your ammo tube and you just pop it out to reload then pop it back in. :)
14:56 the look of wth just happened and made me laugh more than i should have its 1:30 am. ive been up since 6 and that was very funny for some reason lol
Abram Porras I knew that was going to happen the minute I saw the loading hole in the barrel for the ping pong balls at the beginning of the video...still laughed my ass off when it happened. That moment of silence while the balls bounced around made it even better 😂
This was the last video I every got to watch with my father. Adam and him were so alike. My dad had been a welder and machinist for Grumman during the Challenger build. I still coke back and rewatch every year on his birthday. Makes me laugh every time cause he knew the solution before we all knew there was a problem.
Adam... My life has missed you. I used to love your show. And now seeing you just fulfill ridiculous dreams that make you so genuinely happy and see you having so much fun. It's wonderful
I love how Adam Savage has become more of a UA-camr and less of a TV host. I think the Internet will be the retirement village of TV hosts: not that there's anything wrong with that...
Matthew McLaren simple funnel hoppers simply don't work with a lot of designs. it would need an area at the bottom to be designed to feed them into the bottom of the funnel and into the tube. making it much more difficult and much more of a trial and error type build. it's a one day build after all. function and simplicity above all else is a great way to go for projects like this. stuff like that would often be additional modifications.
12:5514:4814:55 The amount of "wheels turning in your head" moments in this video is amazing! I love seeing someone try to process what just happened live in the moment lol.
Devon B "and we're just gonna put some happy little motors over here" "remember, there are no mistakes, just another invention" "its not always about the complex, its sometimes Better to just put on a heavy caliber tripod-mounted automatic assault rifle on it"
I believe that you wouldn't have had the updraft issue if you had used an adapter that looked like this: | | ____⤴ ⤴_____ ______________ [⬅Motor] Instead of this: | | _______| |______ _________________ [⬅Motor] It would create a vacuum that would suck the ping pong balls down and into the barrel without the need for supplemental air at the top of the magazine.
cai morgan If he had the adapter on hand, I'm sure he would've used it. The supplemental air technique was pretty darn effective though. THAT'S the maker's way. If it doesn't work, make it work. lol
Yeah, Im surprised he didn't attempt to employ the venturi effect, seemed strange to me that he went for a positive pressure system, where a negative pressure system would have been more effective, wouldn't have needed the hose, and wouldn't have needed to tape the end.
So, using the air to make the ping pong balls enter the chamber makes it so the gun isnt gravity fed, which means you could make a large drum magazine or other style magazine that is better efficiency with space, and have it fed by air, and also put a quickly removable fitting somewhere on the line so that you can quickly swap out magazines. With some nice paint job you could make this into a legit movie prop
Classic Savage build...all the know how when it comes to manufacturing the parts...but the science portion has to be figured out. I love that. It makes you seem more like one of us. And the joy on your face, it was like you were 15 years old again and that's something special.
Not necessarily the 'last' ball. It probably cycles based on the length of the barrel. Some balls will be faster than others based on the pressure (positive or negative) caused by the preceding ball (which also has a variable speed). Tuning the length of the barrel to optimize this cycle might be an option.
djAnakin I think it has to do with the fact that some of them don't "spin" some might get shot straight out. For example, a pool ball gets hit to the pout where it just slides across the table, that ball will move slower than a ball that spins foward
Might be that the air in the front of the first ball is too dense, so it slow down, but the second one get easier time because the first one is a airshield for it.
Cabanaz lol, since when do you have to have the same as his? I bought mine for 3 grand sadly would have been 1500 if I waited a week... and to buy a 3d printer that can make something that big, costs around 3 grand plus the 2k for the comp to run the programs you need , oh and if you don't want it to break the first use, hell you could buy a lath to do that for 500 full price but it will break in minutes or it never shows up, and you should not talk about names when yours is the brand name of a company in the Netherlands lmfao why not change it to Walmart?
Im so so so happy that Ive found this channel! I cant put together two pieces of wood to save my life but, the energy that Adam has makes me want to build everything! I love this!
at the end, you could've maybe even laid the ball chamber pipe parallel with the barrel and just fed the air pressure through the tube and it would've been perfectly portable, too.
So good, love the machine lathe! As a note to the editor, when you have the flicker from slow-mo filmed with low-frequency ballasts you can fix it in post by duplicating the layer, offsetting the upper layer by 1 frame and setting its opacity to 50%. Here is an example from good ol' Phillip Bloom vimeo.com/80187743. Keep up the good work!
Your sense of humor and humbleness is cool. What you said when the ping pong balls shot out the top of the magazine was epic thanks for the entertainment sir...
Simple funnel geometries don't work with ping-pong ball feeds; and they don't just sometimes jam; they jam right away; one or two balls and then jam. Table-tennis robot makers (such as Stiga) have had this problem since the 70's. They invariably settle on some kind of rotary slotted agitator at the bottom of the bin, or some other kind of mixer-upper.
Hi Adam, Great toy. Here's what it needs: Attach the small tube from the end of the barrel about an inch from the end, instead of from the breach. That way the air pressure to the magazine is not constant but only at the last moment, just as a ball is leaving the barrel. That will allow the first ball to gain its velocity before the next ball is introduced to the barrel. As it is now, the next ball is being forced in too soon behind the first. When two balls are in the barrel at one time, there is a vacuum between the faster ball and the slower one behind it. This slows the first one back down just before it leaves the barrel and it can't recover its speed. That's why the ball following then often hits it in the air. This change should give you much higher velocity, consistency and accuracy.
Oh, man, if you liked THIS build, you'll LOVE Adam's 1,000 Shot NERF Blaster build: ua-cam.com/video/G7MDrUG4cws/v-deo.html

Haha ikr. I was like... wait for it, there you go.
his face right after was priceless, tho
I laughed, it was a funny moment. I love this kinda stuff, makes Adam feel relatable
Next week Adam builds a machine for picking up ping pong balls.
Theres already patented thingy to pick up stuff like tennis balls, walnuts and the such, so he just could buy one für a couple of bucks :D
He would just have to replace his blower for a vacuum.
Switch it from Blow to Suck.... :)
This is a job for... MEGAMAID
Yeah, buying one sounds exactly like what Adam Savage would do
14:55 will never not be hilarious 😂
Lmao watch it in .5 speed, it's so much better
"they all came out the top :/"
You could tell when he gets the first ping pong ball to shoot that he needed to cover it, but it just didnt click for him lol

the look on Adam's face is hilarious!
I love how he looks so happy when he does these.

You could even use a curved pipe long enough to reach into that big bag of balls and suck them out (careful now) !
Yea I think that is the proper way of doing it. I believe another way of achieving the same goal is to put a lip behind the magazine inside the main firing tube.

Ben Ward It would onyl work if the individual is interesting enough in their own right. Adam is definitely Zany enough to hold his audience.
Indeed.
I don't see why adam used a long tube for a magazine instead of a funnel style hopper.
Matthew McLaren I'm sure visual effect is important, considering it's a live show. Seeing the balls run down the tube
ive got a feeling that the air pushing back up would have caused problems with them loading out of a hopper and it would have been harder to solve.
Daniel Blair what about having the final feed tube on an angle of say 45 vs 90 that way the air pushes them forward instead of up
Matthew McLaren THANK YOU
14:55 LOL love ya Adam

cai morgan If he had the adapter on hand, I'm sure he would've used it. The supplemental air technique was pretty darn effective though. THAT'S the maker's way. If it doesn't work, make it work. lol
HolyFenderBender14 I dont doubt you!
i was impressed by the diagram in the UA-cam comment! haha genius
Yeah, Im surprised he didn't attempt to employ the venturi effect, seemed strange to me that he went for a positive pressure system, where a negative pressure system would have been more effective, wouldn't have needed the hose, and wouldn't have needed to tape the end.
I think that is the first time I have seen a diagram in a comments section haha. Well done.
Where can i get myself one of those face-shields?
raygear.com/index.php/x-shield-by-raygear-face-shield-safety-glasses-all-in-on-combination-safety-industrial-recreational-use.html
cody h thanks a bunch!
Ville Koskela The one and only.
Adam, I have been watching Mythbusters since I was 2 and I was sad to see it end.
Still a kid at heart. :-)
Elizabeth A Mizdail k, totally misread that.
Read it as "Still a heart at kid"
Why are there even Tested Videos without Adam? He's the only Reason that makes this Channel worth Watching :D
I really liked the slower, less driven more long-format video.
if Adam doesn't have it no one does
I love Adam's one day builds honestly. Like he takes his time and there's no like overdone timelapses or anything. It feels way more personal :3
13:06
Adam: I think that was important. I think something important just happened there.
Me: I would say so, Adam.
14:55 Holy crap I started cry laughing at the look on Adam's face. LMAO
I'm amused that some of the balls actually hit the ball in front of it after being shot out. I wonder why the leading one slowed down.
djAnakin i think the lead one is causing a vacuum behind itself when the next ball drops into place increasing its speed.
DaCrazyDingo oh so the last ball has the highest speed.
24 really is a good number. Rest in Paradise Kobe
This little chuckle when he realizes the perfect thing to do is just hilarious
Without a lathe you could 3d print the adapter
Frothar you do know a 3d printer is way more expensive right ?
Cabanaz that seemed unjustly mean at the end there
Cabanaz lol, since when do you have to have the same as his? I bought mine for 3 grand sadly would have been 1500 if I waited a week... and to buy a 3d printer that can make something that big, costs around 3 grand plus the 2k for the comp to run the programs you need , oh and if you don't want it to break the first use, hell you could buy a lath to do that for 500 full price but it will break in minutes or it never shows up, and you should not talk about names when yours is the brand name of a company in the Netherlands lmfao why not change it to Walmart?
or instead of using a $50 piece of delrin, you could have just used a $5 funnel with duct tape
Ian Clarke ya, but it is so nice to work with
Is that even legal in CA?
nah
As long as the capacity is less then 10 rounds.
And well. The magazine isn’t removable
To be honest what is
BigAl205 it's illegal, it's a ghost gun with a 30 magazine clip
Im so so so happy that Ive found this channel! I cant put together two pieces of wood to save my life but, the energy that Adam has makes me want to build everything! I love this!
Just got back from the show. Can confirm this thing is a Gatling gun on the show
The Durham show was incredible. Adam was just as awesome to meet in person as we all imagine.
omg he's such a kid i love it
the look on his face when they went out the top...priceless lol
15:35 I love how giddy he gets when he figures something out. Every video you can truly tell he loves to build and learn
Oh Savage. You genius.
1:32 I can picture Jamie flipping out over this
at the end, you could've maybe even laid the ball chamber pipe parallel with the barrel and just fed the air pressure through the tube and it would've been perfectly portable, too.
Watching your mind and body float through all the thoughts and tools is beautiful to watch.
That is an awfully specific work-around which I hope I can remember in case it is ever relevant. TIL! Thank you for sharing knowledge!
Yeah what they said
adam savage = vsauce4
NonsensicalVids omg yes
Says he is going to wear face shield more. Then only uses it once.
Zex Maxwell
Once is an improvement, however he does need to use it more.
The voice is a problem though. Maybe only when it is really necessary. He has the experience -...
Zex Maxwell did you see him use any powertools. Everytime he is super careless and cuts really quickly.
he's a lot more careful then most machinists I've worked with
I'm not sure I've ever seen a machinist who wears a face shield while operating a lathe or mill.
Your sense of humor and humbleness is cool. What you said when the ping pong balls shot out the top of the magazine was epic thanks for the entertainment sir...
14:55 gets me laughing every damn time lol.
in his head like "Dumbass"🤣🤣
The only way this could be improved is by putting a bucket and funnel on the feeder pipe to make it hold and fire hundreds of balls at a time
+1 that one... (just watched the vid and that was my first thought (commented too))
great minds play with the same toys. lol.
What if he did like a paintball gun and had the air feed into the ball reservoir then out the barrel
what a pretentious comment, jesus.
14:56 is how I live my life :) haha
Adam is awesome. A great American icon. Love ya brah! 🇺🇸
The one day build isn't sponsored by GE?! 😱
they are not fans of sucking and blowing balls
LongviewGarage they don't have the balls.
They do, but they're lazy so they only like to have their balls licked by others.
the Grand Exchange can sponsor things?
adam your a true inspiration and i deeply aspire to be like you
I am heavy weapons guy and this is my weapon.
Dumms some can out smart me, yes. But I am yet to find man who can outsmart ping pong ball
it cost $2.99 to fire this gun for twelve seconds.
*kisses ping pong gun*
Ha
There needs to be a 5 gallon water jug for the loader.. fit like 200 or more balls in it.
