These were NOT a TC Sounds or Thilo Stompler design. These were developed in house by Dayton Audio and manufactured in China by a pretty good build house that makes woofers for a number of companies including some you are familiar with. Second spiders are demanded by the woofer-buying public especially for home theater, as are the copper cap and shorting ring. Even then, I had a transducer engineer from Bose contacting me and saying we had too much Mms for even dual 8" spiders, but there were never any problems with sagging or fall-out of the compliance. You are correct that home theater was the target market. I am familiar because I was the project manager for this development, many many moons ago. The frame was open tooling. The single piece surround and gasket were a custom tool. The most difficult part was aligning the coupler cone to the fiberglass/nomex dish. We corrected some of the issues that were present in the smaller sizes of Ultimax to make them more robust for the 18", then some of those lessons were also applied to the 8". These are happiest in sealed boxes, not vented.
Cool. I was under the impression that the Ultimax was developed to replace the AudioPulse Epic series which at the time PE was clearing out for Thilo.
Is this woofer a good choice for music only? I want some kick for two channel music.

Hey brother. What sort of power do you think these 18s can happily take? I'm thinking about buying 2 of them, and probably running them off my HCCA3000.4H 4ch amp, its rated 1500wrms x2 @ 4ohm, I also have a Stetsom 8K 2 ohm, but that's probably too much for even 2 of these 18s I'm guessing. I'm a bit worried, these look kinda easy to damage both mechanically and electrically..
Currently I'm just running a single HCCA 12" dual 4 ohm off that 4ch, and it's good, it can easily soak up all of the 4ch and most of the 8K with the coils in parallel (all of the 8K with the coils in series). I'm just wondering, will the big cone size (and maybe high efficiency?) actually make it far, far better than that 12" HCCA that can soak thousands of watts, or is this 18" just too weak? The HCCA is *insanely* inefficient.
I would recommend something more hardy.

Those tinsel leads are a joke talk about the cheapest absolute junk you could put on a sub that got to be bargain-basement stock they're using even the crappiest subwoofers use double-stitched tinsel leads not to single roll crap
My DD 9918's have small leads like this, and they have handled 7k + rms watts for a couple years now. No failures. The quality depends on what that lead is comprised of. I've burned through PLENTY of flat sundown leads, since switching to digital designs, not one lead failure yet.
I'll just throw that out there.
Dayton audio utimax are good home audio subs but not for car audio were not replacement for a thilo sub
