About Me:
My bio is pretty random: In short, I am a professional singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada who moved to Manila, Philippines which sorta became my Hollywood because my first UA-cam channel MIKEYBUSTOSVIDEOS grew popular due to Filipino comedy videos. Meanwhile, I'm also a big biology geek who is obsessed with ants, so I built an internationally operating ant business supported by another popular channel called ANTSCANADA, and well basically, today I travel and tour around the world doing what I love so I wanted to start this vlogging channel, in hopes to encourage you guys to follow your dreams no matter how random, by showing you what happened when I followed mine! You just never know where life will take you when you listen to the yearnings of your heart!

What you're going through really is like parenting a child. So many things are hard to enforce because you see they are sad. But it's such a good feeling when you see them accomplish a life skill that will help them through their lives. Good job!
Congrats on getting 100% DNA results! I had a DNA scare with my tortoise a few years ago. I've had her for 10 years now, prior to becoming a Veterinarian. The type of tortoise she is(Argentinean Red-Footed Tortoise) , is sexually demorphic as an adult. Also the males make a clucking sound similar to a chicken as adults. So when I thought I heard her make a clucking sound when it was only some sounds from drinking too much water at once, I thought I had been wrong thinking she was a female. It made me sad to think I had been calling her a female for multiple years when she was a male. So I took her to work and ran a DNA test and thankfully I was right for calling her a female! I know how stressful the results can be!
Some vet advice for you about moving Ligaya over to solids. Slowly start adding solids to her soft food every day, start with 5% solids and add another 5-10% solids to the minute daily until she is completely switched over to dry pellets. Try to stay away from those pellets with artificial colours. However, there are some pellets that can be made similar with colours from spinach for green, beets for red, blueberries for purple and so on. You will just have to read the ingredients to make sure tgat is the case.
I've taken on teaching a course at the university as well as working full time part at the university and part at a private clinic so have not had much time to watch your videos as of late! I try to watch one ever few days or atleast part of it. Keep going with being a great bird owner! You are doing a fantastic job and Ligaya lucked our with you as a dad!

@@heenanyou It is possible to castrate a male bird, however birds testicles are located internally and require either invasive open body surgery or multiport endoscopic surgery depending on the bird. Even after that some birds can still hold viable sperm within their body for up to 6 month approximately so are still able to fertilize for that time period. Testicular tissue can regenerate if not 100% removed as well. It is not like in dogs and cats where castration can calm a male down. Birds behaviours do not tend to change due to castration. It is quite a controversial topic in the avian veterinarian field, and I personally only perform the procedure when there is a medical emergency that calls for it.
@@heenanyou many bird species are sexually demorphic enough that gender Identification is obvious. For species with no gender demorphism DNA is the clear identifier. Often avian species will actually pair with a same sex partner. Or become defensive of a same sex owner so it is not 100 % guaranteed that gender can be identified solely through behaviours alone.
Hahaha..!!! Good memory! It must be your most memorable thing that happened to you that's why you still remember it. For me myself, my most earlier memory when I was 5 years old when I got my little sister born to this world.. before it I can't remember anything.. hahaha..
I have a conure and I actually got to raise him. I got him when he was all grey. It's honestly amazing being a bird parent. !

My 25 yr old African Grey "Bud" picks his favorite color pellets too. He gets Zupreem pellets and he will not eat the purple ones ever! Does Ligaya dip her pellets in water before she eats them? Bud does all the time. So does my parent's Timneh African Grey named Talko Bell. Luv the videos!!

Well you can see Ligaya is a female since her tail has some darker at the ends. Males doesn't have that.
All African Greys have that dark ends until their first moult.

Also the palm nuts. Man I’ve been trying to get my hands on queen palm nuts but they’re rare here in Hawaii. My kids school saved the small ones for irie but I’m not sure the small ones are safe . I got organic cold pressed red palm oil on amazon and mix a bit on with pellets and he loves it and it’s so healthy for him !
And syringe feeding I hear you on how hard it is. Ours eats one 10cc syringe 2x a day and we are trying to quit too as he’s old enough but man it’s hard. Now I know why reputable breeders don’t recommend or condone giving birds unweaned to owners as its easier for them to wean a clutch then ya to wean a singleton 🤦🏽♀️

I nursed my daughter for 2 1/2 years, & although she weaned herself off of actually feeding, she still very much felt a claim toward my breasts. I mean, if I stopped her from reaching into my shirt, say, at a restaurant or party, she would get highly offended! lolol It has been well over a decade since those days, but if I remember correctly, it took her an additional year to completely wean from me.
Ligaya was like a kid, she knows whom to ask food like ate Elsie.

Funny story, for my first adoption of a stray kitten, my mother and I applied our knowledge from dogs and thought it was a female. A couple weeks later, we noticed two small nodes on the tummy that kept going down and, for our surprise, she was actually a he. Well, after that, we learned the actual differences between male and female cats, so it became easier to tell them apart.
She couldn’t be a male, she has the cutest parrot girly face!

Also, as for how to wean Ligaya off of the gruel: this was the trick with my cat and solid foods. Start by giving her the gruel in the spoon completely blended exactly as she has had it. Slowly start mixing it less and less and adding in solids folded into the gruel; until you have no gruel and all veggies

You may want to try not blending the gruel completely smooth. Then she can chew as she eats from the spoon.

My cat has been gobbling his dry food down and then throwing up. I gave him soft food (healthier and harder to gobble down) but he's preferring the dry food. So I had to use some TOUGH LOVE. He can now either eat the healthier soft food OR work for every piece of dry food from a slow feeder bowl.
He finally stopped begging. Guess what? No vomiting, healthier food and healthier weight
Try slowly give her seeds with the spoon, she may relate that to having the gruel with the spoon and once she adjusts to that, she will start eating from the bowl.

I’ve done this with dogs who don’t want to eat their food. You burry treats in it and they eat the food to find the treat. You can put a little groul in the solids.
U just had to say that when I was turning up my volume.... oh Mikey.... lol
When she begs for food, maybe hand the bowl to her instead of setting her in front of it. That way you feed her and answer her begging without giving her the syringe. Maybe even loosely hold her neck into the bowl.

I have two 15 year old Congo African Grey's. There are male and female siblings from the same clutch. The second best way to sex Grey's, other than DNA testing, is to look at the shape of their heads. The female has a more rounded head than the male. The male's head is flatter on the top, giving the male an elongated head and beak appearance. Your Ligaya looks very feminine in my opinion. In my experience, my female is more affectionate than my male. They shared a cage until they reached sexual maturity and up until they were moved to separate cages, my female ruled the roost! As they reached sexual maturity, Annabelle was the dominant personality. Dylan would even hand off an almond to her first when given one as a treat. They were separated because I didn't want them to breed. They are side by side now.

Maybe try hand feeding her, like giving the food directly? It might be the one-on-one attention she craves.

The way I did it with my cockatiel is first spoon, and then the same stuf finely chopped from te spoon then in the bowl and then just bigger and bigger bits
Maybe puree the gruel less over a few weeks until its just chopped.

mikey i also had that kind of stage. its embarrassing to think about it now. i had it til i was 6! cuz i stopped drinking breast milk til i was 2. my mom told me to pretend my ears are the things. and it worked!!

I think Ligaya gets really filled whenever she eats using the syringe so it's kinda hard for her to wean off of it. She'll eventually get tired of it tho...when she's really old. :-)

What if you were to add chunks of veggie and stuff into the gruel and slowly but surely take out more and more of the gruel from the mix? Would that work for weaning her? It might trick her just enough to get the job done
