The mineral-rich volcanic soil of Santorini is ideal for vineyards, and it comes as no surprise to learn that the island has at least ten operating wineries.
Almost all can be located by asking your hotel concierge, and are within easy distance of wherever you might be staying. A telephone call is usually enough to get permission for a visit to see how Santorini's famous wines are produced.
The best-known winery is Santo Wines, perched breathtakingly on the edge of the volcano rim on the road to Pyrgos. It has a wide terrace with tables where you can do your wine-tasting in style, adding a few delicacies such as sun-dried tomatoes and crushed fava beans.
There's also a traditional grape-treading establishment which people line up at every August for the sheer pleasure of squishing grapes in a vat -- make sure you wash your feet first -- destined for the popular Vinsanto label. And what's more, you can order a few bottles of the very stuff you've stomped!
