The "Doctrine of Discovery" justified indigenous genocide in 1493. Here's why it must be retracted.

  • Cities and states across the country are acknowledging the devastating history of colonialism by rejecting the federal holiday of Columbus Day and instead celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day to honor centuries of indigenous resistance. We speak with Iakowi:he'ne' Oakes, executive director of the American Indian Community House in New York. She is a Mohawk woman of the Snipe Clan. Oakes explains the significance of the so-called "Doctrine of Discovery," which in 1493 was invoked by Pope Alexander VI to establish the basis for Christian settlers to colonize land occupied by indigenous peoples. "If you're not Christian people, you're not considered human," she says of the document. "Basically, we can't have title to land if we are indigenous and non-Christian." She and other indigenous advocates are calling on the Vatican to retract the doctrine.

As an native American I have bought back my land , and I own my own company. I wont let what someone else has done to my ancestors destroy my life. They stole our land in the name of God shame on them, but I wont let that stop me from being who I am. Native American and Proud of it. 🌍

I am a settler and colonizer decendent. Some of my ancestors were killed by Native American tribes and tried to take the land that was not occupied at that time those Indians claimed. They became hard working farmers and alone owned slaves but humbled themselves after the Civil War ended. Some of my ancestors were Puritians, Scot-Irish, German and Scandinavian immigrants who wanted freedom of religion and opportunities. My Italian and Irish ancestors face challenges along with discrimination because they were Catholic or were not Anglo stock in the 1800's. I am a proud White American who loves her White Culture and rich multi European American Heritage. I will continue to strive to stay in this land and will stand ger ground. The land was nit stolen it was conqoured. It won't change or destroy whi I am. I'm White European American and Proud if it. 👏

I've long been sickened by the observance of "Columbus Day". When Columbus landed on this continent he horribly mistreated the indigenous peoples with torture, enslavement, mutilation, genocide, and European illnesses. Growing up with the Sioux in South Dakota I was horrified by the mistreatment and genocide that the white man has practiced there. Of all the "minorities" in the United States, the Native American has suffered the most profoundly. Columbus didn't "discover America".....these people were already here and had been for over a thousand years. Let us stop the observance of Columbus Day and, instead celebrate our indigenous brothers.

Columbus discovered America's for Europe. It was already there. Nobody buys beliefs from then. Didn't a Pope issue a renunciation of that, long ago? If not, someone should ask for a formal statement. In the meantime, perhaps more publishing houses translating from Spanish to English to furnish English speaking countries with translations of the best Hispanic literature might be worth doing. It could be a co-op endeavour.

All humans are colonized and they fight colonization. This is the mode of war since the beginning. The indigenous people are not one group either. They came over in waves. They had wars over hunting or farming grounds. Some of those wars were genocidal. The Aztec sacrificed tens of thousands of war captives per year in their alters. This way they destroyed their neighbors so their own empire could grow. The Europeans were better at war, that is the reason for their unmitigated success. I agree that the doctrine of discovery is an anachronism. The races in America are slowly mixing. This is one of the greatest peace makers. Even historic Europe was in constant wars of migrations in the past. Make no mistake, "European" is not one race. They are a conglomeration of 1000's of years of warfare or mixing.

@@luvbootys On occasion what you say was true. There were some tribes that rarely went to war, that is true also. When the war was a hot war they took scalps and smashed skulls. Scalp taking was far older than wars fought with white people. Are you implying that the Indians never scalped? Also, Google "the tower of skulls" in Tenochtitlan (Mexico City). They excavated the base of one of the historically described tower of skulls. Stop listening to the self-guilt propaganda. There is no justification for any war, I agree, we do it for survival and growth. Indian natives are just as guilty, but their weapons were not as effective. Also, old world diseases killed more than any weapons. This was inadvertent since even the Europeans did not understand the nature of contagious diseases.

@@CHAS1422 Well first of all we are not talking about aztecs we are talking about the untied states or the real name TURTLE ISLAND and it was european diseases that wiped out the sovereign nations not white supremacy the american military knew they couldn't win a WAR fighting against Indian tribes so they intentionally released the smallpox epidemic 2 million gone within 5 years the federal government then killed off 75 Million buffalo from canada to texas that is what happens when you allow and invasive species into your country

@@luvbootys There was no United States. It didn't exist when the greatest devastation occurred. There was no Mexico. Europeans did not understand the nature or transmission if pathogenic diseases until Louis Pasteur. You are listening to too many propaganda myths. The killing of the Buffalo is unfortunately true. But it is also true that a hunter gather culture in North America could not support more than 20 to 30 million people. The killing of the Buffalo was a deliberate strategy to settle the land so it could be subdivided by settlers. We feed a nation off of this act of deliberate cruelty.
