I love my 13 Fishing reels. I have concept Zs, C and tx. My C is one of the older ones that the side plate comes completely off. They are tough and people might not like the zero bearings, but they have served me extremely well. I think I’m gonna grab another Curado mgl. I have the 70, but this time I’m going with the 150. I’ve been thinking about it, but you guys pushed me on over the edge. Thanks for these videos. They continually get me in trouble with the wife.
Remember that "Top 5" video where Matt only talked about 5 rods / reels / combos? Me neither. 🤣 I'm waiting for him to find a way to go over budget on the "high end / price is no object" combo Buyers Guide.
Thanks guys! I bought an ultegra and paired it with a bass x st croix. Been wanting to jump into this price range. Very few people review like you guys, 👍🤝👏🏼🙌🏻
For most people, I find that $300-$350 is about the sweet spot for a "nice" combo. Something like a $200-$250 reel and $100-$150 rod. On the upper end they may sniff $400. The big thing is having 5, 10, 15 or more rods. As most of us know, it's pretty easy to get to $3000+. For the fair weather fisherman, it's a tough call. But, they may decide to buy one really nice $500+ combo, a $250, and then a few $150-200's.
I'd rather fish with higher end rods forsure. The zodias combos with the Vanford or curado 150mgl are best bang for the buck imo at 400$. But the rods are more important to me. I'd rather have a Nasci and keep a Zodias than a Curado using a Tein power reel.
Good choices. I've had good luck with the Daiwa Tatula SV reel, and it fits nicely in this category. The brake control is amazing for wind defense and flipping.
That Zodias 7'6 light is nice for big smallies. More like a light+ feel. Try a 4000 Vanford on it - handles bigger fish and the occasional musky or pike well.
The Dobyns Sierra and Kaden series should be in the $300 combo video. Pair them w/ an SLX or Miravel and you are right at $300. With the sales, you make it easily.
$400 combo is my budget and does great for tournaments or fun fishing , dobyns rod pair with either a Daiwa or shimano reels , reliable and performance

My 70 dollar, telescoping Kastking rod, and 20 Plussino reel caught me a 4 lb 2 oz largie. Firm believer if you take care of your reels, budget combos can land you those big fish too. But high end gear does feel smoother.
There's a point to what you are saying, although taking care of a $20 reel pretty much consists of tossing it in the trash and buying a new one. I in fact considered buying one for some of the harsher outings. But in the end I think I'll just service my Shimanos when needed.
@@tacticalbassin I gotcha! 7’5” would be my longest Mh, but you mentioning the way it loads kinda makes me intrigued. I’m thinking it’s gonna load a little deeper almost giving a softer tip feel? Awesome information on the 13 fishing c2 reel vs currado 150mgl which one of the 2 casts further in your opinion so with which reel will send the lure further thanks
Well, Matt and Tim...Shimano just released the SLX DC XT under $250, which is just as good as the Anteras DC without the huge price. Plug that reel now!
Thanks to these last year I got myself a Shimano Curado 150 MGL, SLX DC, and an SLX 70 MGL. I liked the MGL's a lot more than the DC, I was surprised how much I back lashed with the DC that I would have rather spent another $10 for the Curado MGL or saved $30 for the SLX MGL.
Agree 100% on the DC. I got it because I was a beginner baistcaster and was worried about backlashing. Frankly my learning curve was a LOT faster than I thought and as soon as I had a somewhat educated thumb, my Shimano MGL 70 quickly became my fav and I backlash a lot less with the 70 than I do with the DC. I think it’s the shallow spool? Results in much less line-digging, maybe, not sure. The extra $ you spend on the DC is much better spent on overall better reel quality/engineering. Beginners: all you need is time on the water. The higher-end Shimanos are amazing and make learning how to cast a breeze. (As does Quantum Tour S3 if you can find one on eBay. Amazing reel!)

Thank you, Matt and Tim. Great stuff as always. We're over my price point - I'm not keen to risk a combo that cost more than my first car to the rigors and hazards of the Florida shorelines - but it's always fun to see that upper-end gear on display. If any primarily bank anglers read this, I am curious: Do you tend to steer away from high-dollar gear like I do, or do you just accept the risk? Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!
I try to find a middle ground. I find that there's a law of diminishing returns when it comes to fishinf gear. A $150-200 combo will be way better than a $50 combo from Walmart, but a $400-500 combo will only be slightly better than something half the price. I won't go so cheap that it breaks easily and is unreliable, but nothing so expensive that I feel like I'm wasting money I could be spending elsewhere.
With out knowing if you have technique specific rods this rod and reel combo is one of the best Daiwa sv tws ($200) and either duckett rod , st croix rod very very hard to beat both rods range from 100 plus
@@poker_matt4458 I'm in Florida, so things are a lot simpler than in other parts of the country. I usually carry 2, occasionally 3 combos: Typically I have a jig or bladed jig, soft plastic and a frog. It's hard to be too technique specific with only 2-3 combos, so I go for versatility. If there's cover, I have a MH spinner, MH baitcaster and a heavy baitcaster. I use mainly Dobyns and 13 Fishing; I would love to love St. Croix, but have found them to be too tip-heavy for my taste. I won't give up on them, though. Good luck out there!
Bob, obviously we use a lot of high end gear but the other day I was walking a river with an NRX/Stella combo and I spent the whole evening worried about breaking it, scuffing it every time I sat it down. Definitely need to find some middle ground for consistent bank angling. 👍 I'll spend this coming season trying to find some really good options... I saw your comment about a bank angler guide and I really like that idea.
@@jazzfeline5970 That's a good point about diminishing returns. Florida is not exactly the Finesse Fishing Capital of the world when it comes to largemouth, so how much more "feel" DO I need to pay for? That answer will probably vary depending on where you live, but down here it's hard to justify jumping to that next level once you're using decent quality gear...especially for Clumsy Bank Anglers like me. Good luck out there!
Amazing buyer’s guide! Great info and thank you for links. Can’t wait for higher end combos! Any idea if any nrx, st croix, or adrena sales? Trying to find a new rod for my new Antares DC. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.

Magnum jerkbait rod? I know you guys love the expride 6-10 medium for normal jerkbaits but do you reccomend the expride 6-10 MH for 3/4 and 1 oz jerkbaits like the Rerange 130 or the Pointer 128? Thanks and I love the buyers guide.
A lot of good rod and reels in this price point. Dobyns champion , Cashion Icon , Megabass, Daiwa Tatula elite , Gloomis. 13 fishing reels IMO suck. Shimano or Daiwa are a step ahead of all others. Tatula or Tatula elite reel are both excellent.
This comment has nothing to do with rods but I’m getting into big bait fishing and I have been shopping around for a net that is lightweight enough to use on my own but heavy enough to hold a big bass. Do you have any recommendations?
I know most companies doing sales they exclude megabass, g-loomis, shimano, st. Croix and so on but I haven’t seen on TW where they say what’s on sale or what’s not. Was wondering how do we know if what we want is on the sale or not?
Sites will show no discount on those brands because of MAP pricing requirements but discounts can still happen if they're not advertised. You will not see a discount reflected in your cart, but it will be applied when you complete the purchase. You'll find it reflected on your receipt after purchase. This isn't new, it's been this way with every sale for years 👍🏼 Here's a direct link to the sale: bit.ly/2OyZlG8
What's up fellers? I know you guys are big shimano fans and so am I. I'm curious though, you have never brought up the shimano scorpion. From what I have read it is a twin to the curado and had the mgl spool before the curado did. It also has a smaller price tag. Do you dudes have an opinion on these reels? Been thinking about buying one. Thanks, Jake Turnbough
@@tacticalbassin $450 for a rod is definitely not in the budget lol but from what I hear it's definitely worth Ramen and kraft dinner for a couple weeks
Would you recommend the Expride 7’7 heavy or Zodias 7’5 heavy? Primary purpose would be for a rigs, small glides and small swim baits. Thanks for all the great content!
I have a Daiwa Tatula, Fuego, and Exceler. The Tatula is noticeably lighter, but not worth 2x the price of the $100 Fuego. I would spend that extra money on more Daiwa Tatula SV's. Everyone has their own preferences and thus should consider going to a tackle shop to handle rods. TB loves Shimano but I wasn't impressed with them. Even after handling high end Megabass/Shimano/GLoomis, I'd spend my money on a Dobyns Champion.
I mostly use Dobyns rods but I am too much of a tackle junkie to be exclusive to one brand lol I also have Megabass Levantes, Daiwa Zillions/Steez/Tatulas, and a couple 13 Fishing rods. Reels I am pretty much exclusive to Shimano and Daiwa with the majority being Shimano. But once again I have a couple 13 Fishing reels sprinkled in there as well I f’ing LOVE tackle lol
How do you guys feel about Daiwa reels? I bought 3 different sizes a few years back, the spitfire or whatever. The biggest one, which I only use for dunking or slide bait is ok, but barely gets used. The other two I have had to repair 4 times already. All of a sudden the spool starts spinning both ways. I’ve never had reels fail while still being new, and so frequently. They failed probably after 1 year of use. I had a cheap shimano fx feel ($20) for over 8 years before it started feeling rough when feeling it. I’m never going to buy daiwa reels again.
The rod definitely outshines the reel but that reel is so light and feels so good in the hand, I think that would be a great way to reach to a higher price point and get to experience an extremely light, extremely sensitive rod.
The Tackle Warehouse site says no discount on Shimano, GLoomis, and St. Croix. You said only Megabass is excluded, how do we get the discount on these brands?
Thats standard verbiage to protect MAP pricing amongst the brands. What can be advertised may not be the same as what can be done 😉 Its been the same for years, You just have to complete the sale. It won't even show the discount in your cart, but it will be applied when you make the purchase and will be reflected on your receipt. The sale has started, here's a direct link: bit.ly/2OyZlG8
Here is the link to the sale: bit.ly/2OyZlG8 Many brands (Daiwa included) are shown as 4xcluded but that is to protect MAP pricing requirements. If you complete the sale and check your receipt you will find that you did in fact get the discount. It's been this way with every sale for years 👍🏼

I’m thinking of getting a dobyns Kaden 735cb for spooks and small ploppers, do you all have any feedback on the Kaden line?
Thanks in advance!
If a guy wanted to get into these higher quality combos but had to do a piece here and a piece later. Rod first or reel first. Assuming you already have some pretty good “budget” combos already
If it were me (Matt) I'd go with the nicer rod first. Increase that sensitivity and then worry about the reel layer.
I know we are passed this price point, but have you guys tried any duckett rods (specifically jacob wheeler) or their reels?
Does the GCX get discounted after you pull the trigger at checkout?
Been eyeballing that MBR 843 for some time
Yes. You will see the discount applied afterwards.
Unfortunately I didn't need any more rods or reels this year, so I bought a gamakatsu luxxe and a curado 70 mgl
I didn't need anything either, so bought an SLX MGL. 😀 Have never owned an MGL, so looking forward to playing with it. Good luck out there!
You're going to LOVE that setup!! Its very unique and really enjoyable to fish.
@@tacticalbassin it specs out to be a good tn70/lv500 rod, hopefully it is. I currently throw them on a 7'2 mh victory, but it's a little soft imho.
What about the Bass Pro Shops Johnnie. Morris Signature Platinum and 50th Anniversary Signature series?
We haven’t spent a lot of time with the BPS brand.
@TacticalBassin thanks. Happy Thanksgiving blessings to you and your families
I’m having the hardest time selecting which zodius!! 7’2”MH, 7’5”Mh or the 7’2” Mh glass. I love throwing bladed jigs and lipless. Any help?
Give that glass rod a go if you really enjoy throwing bladed jigs 👍🏼
@@tacticalbassin thanks y’all!! I was leaning that way! You guys are the best! Last year I went with the intenza and mgl 150 based off your buyers guides. Boy was that a good call! LOVE IT! U So I know I’m gonna love this zodius! (Also pairing it with a new mgl 150) Maybe next year it’ll be time for an expride or even a loomis! 🤷🏻♂️ Happy Holidays guys!
Have y'all ever used the TFO rods? They seem to be a good middle road with a great warranty. $400 is a bit high for me...
Tackle Warehouse is having its Black Friday Sale. Follow the links in the description if you want your purchase to help support TB. They also have a link in their "about" page. Good luck out there!
NRX, St Croix, and Poison Adrena are all included, just not advertised as such. If you complete the purchase and check your receipt you will have received the discount on any/all of these items. 👍🏼 Here is a direct link: bit.ly/2OyZlG8
I want to try the g loomis MBRs. Trying to decide if I go GCX or IMX pro? Any feedback
What do you guys use the ML expride for? I’m curious just might give me an excuse!
We started out using it for heavier BFS applications. It's since become a phenomenal blade bait, underspin, topwater, and even small Texas rig rod.
Thanks,
Jake Turnbough
Would you go with a expride 7'L or a zodius 7'ML or L for ned rigs and drop shot? Such a hard choice I've never had anything in the realm of rods
If your budget allows, go Expride. They're AMAZING for the price!!
@@tacticalbassin $450 for a rod is definitely not in the budget lol but from what I hear it's definitely worth Ramen and kraft dinner for a couple weeks
Candian pricing and shipping makes things insane
Would you recommend the Expride 7’7 heavy or Zodias 7’5 heavy? Primary purpose would be for a rigs, small glides and small swim baits. Thanks for all the great content!
The 7'7 is our A-rig rod 👍
Thank you!
I mostly use Dobyns rods but I am too much of a tackle junkie to be exclusive to one brand lol
I also have Megabass Levantes, Daiwa Zillions/Steez/Tatulas, and a couple 13 Fishing rods.
Reels I am pretty much exclusive to Shimano and Daiwa with the majority being Shimano. But once again I have a couple 13 Fishing reels sprinkled in there as well
I f’ing LOVE tackle lol
How do you guys feel about Daiwa reels? I bought 3 different sizes a few years back, the spitfire or whatever. The biggest one, which I only use for dunking or slide bait is ok, but barely gets used. The other two I have had to repair 4 times already. All of a sudden the spool starts spinning both ways. I’ve never had reels fail while still being new, and so frequently. They failed probably after 1 year of use. I had a cheap shimano fx feel ($20) for over 8 years before it started feeling rough when feeling it. I’m never going to buy daiwa reels again.
I loving the combo content. But im suprised to not hear Falcon rods in the mix. What are yalls thoughts of the falcon lowrider or Cara rods?
They have been in the past but this is a very hard list of rods to break into year after year. There are some serious heavy hitters!
what do you think about and expride paired with a miravel at this price point?
The rod definitely outshines the reel but that reel is so light and feels so good in the hand, I think that would be a great way to reach to a higher price point and get to experience an extremely light, extremely sensitive rod.
I love St. Croix and have been using them for 20+ years! Is there anything Lews you’d recommend? My combos range from $300-500 on average.
Check their 200 and 300 Guides; The LFS and KVD are profiled.
First babyyy!! What gear ratio do you recommend for the Tranx when using it for swimbaits?
I really prefer the 7:1 high gear with the power handle. If you can't do the power handle, go with the slower ratio.
@@tacticalbassin ty so much TB! Looking fwd to the highend combo.
Anyone know how much exactly the slx dc is on sale for?
Complete your transaction and you’ll see the 20% discount applied.
@@tacticalbassin thanks
Daiwa does sales?
Here is the link to the sale: bit.ly/2OyZlG8 Many brands (Daiwa included) are shown as 4xcluded but that is to protect MAP pricing requirements. If you complete the sale and check your receipt you will find that you did in fact get the discount. It's been this way with every sale for years 👍🏼
