Me, too, and back into sourdough bread making, after years of shelving it because of the strict regiment, but Elly's way is so relaxed and makes it enjoyable.
As a little time saver for the palm oil, you can melt the palm oil then put into smaller molds, like the Wilton brownie bite molds, then it is easier to weight like that then having to keep re-melting. PS....enjoyed the behind the scenes!!!!
That's a wonderful tip Nancy, thank you! The PO I bought came in a 4kg box/bag. I separated it out into these smaller containers. It has worked quite well but smaller sizes would be even better.

I love the idea of using the sea water. I live on the coast of South Texas. Our local bay is only 3 blocks feom our house and we run an AirBnB. It might be fun to make some soap using our local sea water for our guests. ❤

Great video, your soaps look amazing! I would love to try your scent blends in some soap. I made my first two small batches of soap 4 days ago. 4 days later, I had just enough lye to make batches 5 and 6. I have learned so much from watching alot of your videos. Especially about superfat and the water to lye ratios.

Soap making is something I’ve considered off and on. Watching you is mesmerizing. It seems a basic knowledge of chemistry is helpful, something I’ve never been interested in really. My conclusion is, I’ll buy my handmade soaps from the professionals like you! I’ll keep watching because you love it so much!

You can try completely dissolving your sugar and citric acid (and salt if applicable) in your water before adding the lye. I do this method and it works well and avoids any excess water in the soap. Thanks for the video.
Wonderful video as always!!! I use mineral salt and sugar in my all purpose cleaning soap but not citric acid. I will use it in my next batch of body soap I have sesame and sunflower oil leftovers and since it is high summer in Greece I will get a bottle of sea water next time I go swimming and give it a try. Yes Palm oil is an interesting one, as you know I use beef tallow instead - grass fed from a regenerative farm. So I often educate my customers about the difference. I don't see the link you mentioned?
FYI, my kitchen looks a LOT more disorganized than yours when I make soap. LOL! I don't know why it is, but no matter how much you clean as you go, soapmaking just makes a huge mess. Thanks for the video, Elly. You make it all look so easy!

Hello Elly. You are my new bestest channel to watch. Serious, I cant thank you enough for all you teach!! You are so amazing and generous. Now that I have buttered you up, teehee. No, I am serious, you really are amazing. But I was wanting to ask a question. I just made a batch of soap. I measured out my lye and emptied that container. So I opened a new bottle of Sod. H. (so I thought) and poured the remaing amount of lye I needed for my recipe. After a week and a half, I forced my soap 0ut of the mold and it is still very soft. I have made this recipe a LOT so I was beside myself as to what the issue was. I realized the container I opened was NOT Sod. H, it was potasium hydroxide. Is my soap ruined or can I somehow save it? Thank you in advance
Ooh, great question Theri! Your soap may not be ruined, but you have accidentally made what's called a 'dual lye' soap! You'd want to research that, it might make a good cream or semi-liquid soap. You'd have to test it though to see that it's not lye heavy, they calculate differently. Hi Elly, I am new to soap making and have been watching a lot of your videos. I haven’t made my first batch yet just doing the research. Your videos are soooo informative and I LOVE them. I have a question, when it’s time to all the soaps to cure (4|6 weeks) should the soaps be stored packaged or unpacked? Meaning, do I wait until after the time to wrap or box them? Thanks
Thanks for all the info Elly. The Aussie pink clay is much brighter than the French Pink clay. Do you use a different soapcalc for allowing for Citric Acid amount to add. I know George uses a different program. George loves it but I do find it a bit more difficult to navigate and I like everything lined up and close together which soapcalc does.
Well, they are both types of salt (sodium chloride and sodium lactate), so they will both harden soap. I'm not sure to be honest! Sodium chloride can reduce the lather a bit if you use too much. I'm not sure about sodium lactate, I don't use it in my soaps these days. Lots of people use it to make their soap easier to unmould, but I find a water discount is the best help for that.

I have a quick question - who is your supplier for your Aussie pink clay? I have some but seems a much lighter colour than yours and when I’ve tried to use it, it comes out so pale it’s almost a soft beige/pink. I’d like to deepen the colour but adding more clay doesn’t seem to make any difference.. would love any advice you have ?! 😊
That's so interesting KT - I'm using the same pink clay I've had for years. Had it so long I can't remember where it came from (I've put it into my own jar). It may have been from Green Living Australia. It's quite a dark pink when you look at it. I think it's very similar to the red clays I've seen. The names can be deceiving!

Mmm, bar soap tends to go slimy/snotty when you dissolve it in water. Check out my liquid soap videos - they are perfect for handwashing (just made differently to bar soap)
Beautiful soaps! So excited about the sea water…I live 10 minutes away from the Atlantic ocean. Do you treat the water before you use it? We have more waves here and there are possibly some undesirable micro particles in the water… any suggestions? I am jealous over those slippers by the way…
Thanks Tatiana, no I just gather the freshest water I can and store it in the fridge when I get home. If it has any visible particles in it I strain it through a coffee filter. The lye purifies it quite nicely I think. Thanks for your comment. Those slippers save my cold feet in winter!
Another fabulous video I just live watching your soap videos I find olive oil soap goes mushy and gooey so I only now use your coconut oil soap recipe which makes a beautiful hard bar Can I add sugar syrup to that recipe ? Thanks Elly
Thank you Melanie, yes, you can add sugar syrup to any soap recipe, but it's not really needed for coconut oil soap as the lather there is already quite excellent!
I hope you can make something clear for me 🙏🏻 When you are making your lye solution, can you make it in a stainless steel pot or a “5” plastic container? And if so, assuming you have your oils and butters melted in a stainless steel pot, can you pour the lye solution into that container once mixed? I see people using plastic containers for both the lye solution, for just the oils, and for them mixed together. I’m just trying to figure out what is safe and what isn’t for all three parts of the process - making lye solution, melting/holding oils and butters, pouring lye solution in the oils/butters.
Great question!!! Yes, you can use either stainless steel or PP plastic for any and/or all stages of the process :) I use plastic jugs and saucepans, depending on what I feel like on the day. You don't need a third container for mixing the soap, just pour the lye water into the container with the melted oils, in whatever pot they are in! (just not aluminium).
I go to the ocean once a year for a holiday, and I collect sea water there. It's not necessary, but I enjoy using it. Salt adds hardness to the soap bars.
I’m wondering your opinion about lye quality and if different brands of lye affect how a soap reacts and / or turns out? I recently changed lye brands and have noticed some anomalies in my recipe reactions. For example, I have one recipe (hot process) volcano which I haven’t experienced before. I’m wondering if it could be the change in lye.
Great question Honey, yes, I would say that different quality lyes might affect the soap, but unless one is more concentrated (which it shouldn't be, or at least you should know that it is), they shouldn't cause volcanoes. The most common cause of volcanoes are too high heat/temps, and/or too high sugars in the recipe.
Love it, beautiful soaps. I was just discussing the citric acid with George from Dawn Organics today but our discussion was adding it to help with DOS when using Rice Bran Oil. Now you mention that you think it slows down trace, man I am getting into that. Did you increase your lye to counter act the citric?
Hi Christine, yes I've had many conversations with George about it too! It's amazing how it slows down the trace. Inspires me to make more swirly soaps! Yes, I definitely increased the lye to account for the citric acid. All the details are in the recipes linked in the description.
The recipe link in the description box has all the details. Lemon myrtle might be hard to get outside of Australia. Lemon balm might be a nice substitute :)
Do you mean base oils? Some are more refined than others. I use what I have on hand mostly. The coconut oil I use in this video is refined and some of the olive oil. The colours are natural clays, indigo powder and oats - all various degrees of refinement.

You can try completely dissolving your sugar and citric acid (and salt if applicable) in your water before adding the lye. I do this method and it works well and avoids any excess water in the soap. Thanks for the video.

Wonderful video as always!!! I use mineral salt and sugar in my all purpose cleaning soap but not citric acid. I will use it in my next batch of body soap I have sesame and sunflower oil leftovers and since it is high summer in Greece I will get a bottle of sea water next time I go swimming and give it a try. Yes Palm oil is an interesting one, as you know I use beef tallow instead - grass fed from a regenerative farm. So I often educate my customers about the difference. I don't see the link you mentioned?

Hello Elly. You are my new bestest channel to watch. Serious, I cant thank you enough for all you teach!! You are so amazing and generous. Now that I have buttered you up, teehee. No, I am serious, you really are amazing. But I was wanting to ask a question. I just made a batch of soap. I measured out my lye and emptied that container. So I opened a new bottle of Sod. H. (so I thought) and poured the remaing amount of lye I needed for my recipe. After a week and a half, I forced my soap 0ut of the mold and it is still very soft. I have made this recipe a LOT so I was beside myself as to what the issue was. I realized the container I opened was NOT Sod. H, it was potasium hydroxide. Is my soap ruined or can I somehow save it?

Ooh, great question Theri! Your soap may not be ruined, but you have accidentally made what's called a 'dual lye' soap! You'd want to research that, it might make a good cream or semi-liquid soap. You'd have to test it though to see that it's not lye heavy, they calculate differently. These two videos show the difference:

Thanks for all the info Elly. The Aussie pink clay is much brighter than the French Pink clay. Do you use a different soapcalc for allowing for Citric Acid amount to add. I know George uses a different program. George loves it but I do find it a bit more difficult to navigate and I like everything lined up and close together which soapcalc does.

Well, they are both types of salt (sodium chloride and sodium lactate), so they will both harden soap. I'm not sure to be honest! Sodium chloride can reduce the lather a bit if you use too much. I'm not sure about sodium lactate, I don't use it in my soaps these days. Lots of people use it to make their soap easier to unmould, but I find a water discount is the best help for that.

I have some but seems a much lighter colour than yours and when I’ve tried to use it, it comes out so pale it’s almost a soft beige/pink. I’d like to deepen the colour but adding more clay doesn’t seem to make any difference.. would love any advice you have ?! 😊
That's so interesting KT - I'm using the same pink clay I've had for years. Had it so long I can't remember where it came from (I've put it into my own jar). It may have been from Green Living Australia. It's quite a dark pink when you look at it. I think it's very similar to the red clays I've seen. The names can be deceiving!

Mmm, bar soap tends to go slimy/snotty when you dissolve it in water. Check out my liquid soap videos - they are perfect for handwashing (just made differently to bar soap)

Beautiful soaps! So excited about the sea water…I live 10 minutes away from the Atlantic ocean. Do you treat the water before you use it? We have more waves here and there are possibly some undesirable micro particles in the water… any suggestions? I am jealous over those slippers by the way…
Thanks Tatiana, no I just gather the freshest water I can and store it in the fridge when I get home. If it has any visible particles in it I strain it through a coffee filter. The lye purifies it quite nicely I think. Thanks for your comment. Those slippers save my cold feet in winter!

Thank you Melanie, yes, you can add sugar syrup to any soap recipe, but it's not really needed for coconut oil soap as the lather there is already quite excellent!
Is the water you use to dissolve the citric acid part of the water that you are using to dissolve the lye?
I hope you can make something clear for me 🙏🏻 When you are making your lye solution, can you make it in a stainless steel pot or a “5” plastic container? And if so, assuming you have your oils and butters melted in a stainless steel pot, can you pour the lye solution into that container once mixed? I see people using plastic containers for both the lye solution, for just the oils, and for them mixed together. I’m just trying to figure out what is safe and what isn’t for all three parts of the process - making lye solution, melting/holding oils and butters, pouring lye solution in the oils/butters.
Great question!!! Yes, you can use either stainless steel or PP plastic for any and/or all stages of the process :) I use plastic jugs and saucepans, depending on what I feel like on the day. You don't need a third container for mixing the soap, just pour the lye water into the container with the melted oils, in whatever pot they are in! (just not aluminium).

Some FO's don't last, some do. Finding ones that stick is the key! Storing your soap somewhere enclosed with moisture absorbers helps too :)

I go to the ocean once a year for a holiday, and I collect sea water there. It's not necessary, but I enjoy using it. Salt adds hardness to the soap bars.
I’m wondering your opinion about lye quality and if different brands of lye affect how a soap reacts and / or turns out? I recently changed lye brands and have noticed some anomalies in my recipe reactions. For example, I have one recipe (hot process) volcano which I haven’t experienced before. I’m wondering if it could be the change in lye.
Great question Honey, yes, I would say that different quality lyes might affect the soap, but unless one is more concentrated (which it shouldn't be, or at least you should know that it is), they shouldn't cause volcanoes. The most common cause of volcanoes are too high heat/temps, and/or too high sugars in the recipe.

Now you mention that you think it slows down trace, man I am getting into that. Did you increase your lye to counter act the citric?

Do you mean base oils? Some are more refined than others. I use what I have on hand mostly. The coconut oil I use in this video is refined and some of the olive oil. The colours are natural clays, indigo powder and oats - all various degrees of refinement.

My shea butter is raw but my coconut oil is refined. It depends on what is available to me and cost usually. They both have their benefits.
