  • It has been a long ordeal for poor chocolate mama Lab, Duchess. She gave birth to 2 puppies and then her labor stalled. We tried to induce labor with oxytocin to no avail, so we took her to an emergency veterinary clinic in Medford, Oregon, an hour away, where she had a sonogram and an evaluation. She was in good health, so we were advised to let her continue to deliver on her own. However, labor continued to stall, so we took her up to another veterinary clinic in Ashland, Oregon, where she gave birth to a third puppy and then had to have emergency hysterectomy surgery. Mama is now doing well in recovery and we're caring for her 3 very healthy puppies by bottle- and tube-feeding them at home, even though their mama is also back home with us. The reason they can't nurse with their mama is due to the strong antibiotics Duchess is taking. We can't let those antibiotics be passed to her pups. One of our neighboring partner breeders has a mama Lab with a new litter of pups, so we're going to try putting Duchess's pups with this new mom today (11/9/23). We pray the surrogate mama Lab will accept Duchess's puppies and nurse them and care for them well.
Just another day in the life at Marble Mountain Kennels! (But this is not a typical day, mind you. Most of our mama dogs give birth to pups easily with no complications. This is a rare exception to the rule.)
P.S. In case you're wondering about the gross green goop that came out when the puppy was born, that's perfectly normal. It's discharge from the placenta.
