Oh it will certainly happen. I bust my ass to make sure my son knows who KRS-1 is or Chuck D or Rakim...so many more....but damn, gotta know your history to understand why anything in the present is relevant.
Saed Saymeh Honestly, I doubt that a kid would say that. Like there are certain bands that are "respected" by the younger crowds. However in a couple of Centuries the children may see it the same way we see old Classical music (AKA a snoozefest).
jhammaster That might be a a bit of a generalization. Many of my classmates and friends who like mumble rap still know who 2pac is AND respect him for that, even some of the tracks on Dr Dre's 2001 álbum are also well liked by them. If I show them some old school rap legends like Wu-Tang Clan or Nas they might admit that they haven't heard them before but they don't outright hate their sound because it's GOOD FUCKING MUSIC
Just want to say, not only is this the first time a hip-hop artist received a Pulitzer, it's the first time ANY artist outside of the classical and jazz genres has received the award.
To everyone complaining Fantanorino gave Damn a 7: you do realize it is his opinion, right? It's not a reflection on the intrinsic value of the music nor a measure of your own personal connection to the music.
Okay an off tangent rant here (maybe melon can respond later) but hip hop has reached a stage which is greater than even pop music. I know the audience is very varied from college dudes looking for "deep" songs to some random dudes in India who play stick cricket (personally interacted with both, and they know Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson and Kendrick, no one else in the industry). With that being said, I want to talk about the latter demographic. They love hip hop and rap, and a lot of Indian artists are trying to cash in on trap music in their own languages, and this is a trend all over the world. Now while people like me in India do know the cultural significance of the n-word, most people don't. In fact, they go around using it like how they hear it in the songs (they even say it with a hard r, "mera nigar mera jigar" jigar=friend). I'm sure this must be the case in most countries where American politics don't hold relevance with the populace. Which means that whether people like it or not, the n-word has ALREADY been redefined to mean "friend" or "man", it's not an arguement of whether it should or shouldn't be. Accepting that the word has been redefined due to the explosion of hip-hop and embracing this and allowing all races to use it in the non-derogatory manner should become the norm. IDK does anyone have counter-points and also is it even relevant to discuss this here because it's VERY off topic to the video in hand. If Fantany, you want to, you can respond to it, but I don't expect it. I still love your reviews and I think you are impacting the culture even beyond music (by making people rely on independent journalism even for movie book and music recommendations)
So I looked up the competition Kendrick had for this Pulitzer and one just said quartet and legit when you press it for more info no single quartet in particular pops up and the second one is just some crazy sounding electronic bullshit haha so I can definitely see how Kendrick was able to just edge this one out by the skin of his teeth 😂
Well deserved! Personally, I think Kendrick should've gotten the Pulitzer for 'To Pimp A Butterfly' as opposed to 'DAMN'. But, well derseved none-the-less.
When are you gonna talk about Cosmo Pyke? I think he really deserves some of that Fantano review charm. Also I would guess you probably have heard him since you have listened to Steve Lacy, King Krule, and Rex Orange County.
You said that this is the first time an institution of that caliber has given a hip hop artist that high award but did you forget that Jay Z is inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame?
i think the real fact is that the avant garde music scene is so saturated from ideas that folks can't make good music anymore. the ironic thing is that people that mostly write minimalist stuff has won before too
Tupac is already dad rap. TO OTHER RAPPERS. My history teacher, who looks like a dad and is old enough to have a son like myself, talks about notorious big when ever music is being duscussed. Dad rap, I'd argue, in fact exists. Soon, Tupac and mf doom will become grand dad rap. Lil xan will be the obscure uncle we don't talk about tho he did try to boycott Xanax, which I appreciate.
Yeah definitely happy for him and think it reflects a recognition of the man more than the record itself. I've always agreed that DAMN. isn't Kendricks best but I'm still really happy for him.
These videos are short but you end up drawing them out a bit and repeating yourself a lot because you've said pretty much all that needs to be said in like 2-3 minutes. Maybe you could do a weekly or monthly music news recap or something
ok so a 7/10 can win some dumb literary award but our sexy melon can't win miss america 2018??
Finally someone who states the facts
2:15
lol
“I’m scared of the dark”
You heard it here everyone. Melons a racist.
That's why my beautiful DARK twisted fantasy got a 6
if i could tag top.comment.god on this i would
😂😂😂
A light 7 from theneedledrop > Pulitzer Music award
Marquita Chase what the fuck
Spit on the bot and walk along.
Pulitzer Music Prize really is more about the discography then it is for the single album or musical piece.
Fandango has the highest standards
Debo Datta It's for the album DAMN
melon gave damn a 7. damn got a pulitzer prize. melon also gave lil pump a 7. Therefore lil pump also got a pulitzer prize

"Dad rap like Kendrick Lamar"... That hit me hard hahaha
Pechugas Laru my children in the future “You listened to dad rap like Death Grips?” pleb trash
Well it’s gonna happen haha
Oh it will certainly happen. I bust my ass to make sure my son knows who KRS-1 is or Chuck D or Rakim...so many more....but damn, gotta know your history to understand why anything in the present is relevant.
@@fastandbulbous6282 Death Grips won't be considered dad rap. Not enough people listen to them.
Fowlae basically everyone knows what death grips is though. It’s just that not everyone likes it because it’s not for everyone
Should have won for "to pimp a butterfly".
Yea coz it was a jazz influence classical album
Absolutely.
The day I see a kid call Kendrick’s music dad rap in a demeaning tone is the day I uppercut a little kid.
Saed Saymeh Honestly, I doubt that a kid would say that. Like there are certain bands that are "respected" by the younger crowds. However in a couple of Centuries the children may see it the same way we see old Classical music (AKA a snoozefest).
NotSoEpic Gaming with the way they treat artists of yesteryear in hip hop, it will happen.
Saed Saymeh 😂😂😂....that legit caught me off guard, but equally funny as hell.
Saed Saymeh Are you gonna make it look sexy?
jhammaster That might be a a bit of a generalization. I firmly believe kendricks album in 20 years will remain timeless
Honestly, DAMN was okay. It had a lot of weak tracks, and however luckily the tracks that were good, were REALLY GOOD.
should've said really DAMN. good
I honestly always see the Pulitzer for damn was originally intended for TPAB but they just gave it to DAMN since they missed it
Can’t believe my local newspaper won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Coverage the same year Kung Fu Kenny won it for Music.
love it or hate it. Kenny is a certified living legend!
Im so happy he won it because he deserves to be recognized as a genius by the world
Just want to say, not only is this the first time a hip-hop artist received a Pulitzer, it's the first time ANY artist outside of the classical and jazz genres has received the award.

Okay but Caroline Shaw's Partita for 8 Voices, another Pulitzer Prize winner, bumps way harder than Damn.
Okay but why DAMN of the kendy lendy albums? Is it based on the popularity of sales or what? TPAB is like infinitely better.
IN THE THUMBNAIL, YOU CAN TELL THAT KENDRICK IS VERY HAPPY ABOUT WINNING THE PUTLIZER MUSIC PRIZE👌🏻
I looked at the list of all the other winners, and I haven't heard of any of them. It's all just classical and jazz. The Beatles don't even have one!
Didn't Lin-Manuel MIranda get one?
Anthony! Public Strain by Women was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize years ago, they've been hip
"You know its hard out here for a Pimp" Fuck sake Melon
I see you with that monk record, melonboi. Don't think I don't see you with that monk record.
"C"s get degrees, 7s gets melons

Kendrick won
Kendrick Lamar is the equivalent to popular music, what Lionel Messi is to Soccer.
Wow, I don't think anyone has won the Putlizer Prize!
That's an awesome accomplishment for Kendrick. Who else could have fit the bill for this award in rap? interested in who y'all recommend.
somebody tell Fantano this melon's got some ambition ...
wow you made this video super quick jeez
If these walls could talk they’d tell me to swim good
HE JUST WON THE PEWLITZER PRIZE
So I looked up the competition Kendrick had for this Pulitzer and one just said quartet and legit when you press it for more info no single quartet in particular pops up and the second one is just some crazy sounding electronic bullshit haha so I can definitely see how Kendrick was able to just edge this one out by the skin of his teeth 😂
This is what grows when you swallow the seed of a watermelon
Pulitzer Prize winning album that you gave a 7
Lin-Manuel Miranda also got a Pulitzer...
Kendrick Lamar Wins the Pulitzer Prize - TYPE BEAT
When i went to Kendrick's concert I saw quite a bit of people in their 40's there. Never seen that at a rap concert before.
But TPAB is better than DAMN. in everyway tho...
Yes everything does age, but they can either age like wine or age like milk.
that 7 looking real Fugazi
Watching this post beef and I am ashamed. Congrats Kenny!
Well deserved! Personally, I think Kendrick should've gotten the Pulitzer for 'To Pimp A Butterfly' as opposed to 'DAMN'. But, well derseved none-the-less.
>implying dad rap doesn't already exist
TPAB deserved it way more, DAMN. ain’t even my favorite rap album of 2017
When he was talking about Kendrick becoming ‘dad rap’ I was like “Wowh! I wanna be hip with future music but I can’t cuz I’m stuck in the present.”
Kendrick Lamar didn't win the Grammy for the album of the year but he did win pulitzer prize. Now that's history in the making.
If I see the letter 7 one more goddamn time
As if anyone will look back at Damn and say yeah that was a classic. Maybe if he got the Pulitzer for one of his actually good albums
Kendrick Lamar Wins The Melon "7" Prize
I don't know what this award is. But I'm happy for Kdot
Haha that Dad rap comment was so true 😂 I’m scared to see what our kids and their kids will be listening to in the near future
They shoulda told the people who gave k-dot the award that Fantano gave this album a 7.
If it's dark in your office turn the lights on??
"its a high honor to achieve something we never heard of!"
I love you mister melon.
why is there a number 7 all over my screen
That logic sneak diss
"Paradigm Shift"
When are you gonna talk about Cosmo Pyke? I think he really deserves some of that Fantano review charm. Also I would guess you probably have heard him since you have listened to Steve Lacy, King Krule, and Rex Orange County.
M E L O N rhymes with S E V E N
kendrick is the only rapper of this decade ive found that baby boomers can also get behind
That's gonna be awesome. I'm gonna be like 45 and my son will be making fun of me liking dad rap and being excited for Kendrick's 15th album. lol
You know what it is. Yep. Sure do. Putlizer. Yep.
Congratulations Kendrick! Glass ceilings can be broken.
What
So stoked for Dad-Rap tho.
Should've waited for KOD to give out that Pulitzer Prize lol
Maybe do a video going over the previous Pulitzer Music Prize winners. Personally, I’d be interested.
the grammys realizing ????? the fuck melon???? bruno's album of the year===??? the fack? taylor's 1989???? the fuck melon where u at???
thx for ken foo kunnys shoulder
The white gap hurts my eyes but the color coding makes up for it. Aesthetically a 7/10
Even though you hated on DAMN but that should have it's own segment.
Did Kendrick just give melon a 7?! He's a strong to light 4 if anything..
I love the comments on these videos
Melon (a professional music reviewer): Light to Decent 7 out of 10
Some old people: Give that shit a Pulitzer.
The moment when Lil Pump becomes dad rap.
In fact, this is the first Pulitzer prize for music given to an album/song that isn't classical or jazz
Oh, there's Waldo.
I agree with your opinion. This is really a big thing for hip hop music and I was really happy for Kendrick. He deserves it.
Drake fans swing their arms like Tre from Boyz N the Hoo right now
This that raised by the internet ain't had no dad rap...
the "pewlitzer"
Kendrick is certainly an icon and a person cannot say enough about him
You said that this is the first time an institution of that caliber has given a hip hop artist that high award but did you forget that Jay Z is inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame?
the irony of him miss spelling pulitzer
i think the real fact is that the avant garde music scene is so saturated from ideas that folks can't make good music anymore. the ironic thing is that people that mostly write minimalist stuff has won before too
Tpab should of been the album to get all the publicity DAMN. Got
Will 'Lil Pump become dad rap? Will trap become dad rap?
Tupac is already dad rap. TO OTHER RAPPERS. My history teacher, who looks like a dad and is old enough to have a son like myself, talks about notorious big when ever music is being duscussed. 3:44 Holy fucking shit I can totally see that
DAMN. 7=LIL PUMP 7= PUMP DESERVES A PULITZER
"Pealitzer"
When ya tying the knot wit da dot mellon top?
I didn't know they gave Pulizers to 7s
Yeah definitely happy for him and think it reflects a recognition of the man more than the record itself. I've always agreed that DAMN. isn't Kendricks best but I'm still really happy for him.
I thinks his videos are also a Reason he got this award because ITS always art
I wonder if people thought all the crazy futuristic sounds musicians were going for in the 80's would one day sound dated.
Got really happy when heard of the news, Kendrick is a genius.
Dr Dre's The Chronic is dad rap.
These videos are short but you end up drawing them out a bit and repeating yourself a lot because you've said pretty much all that needs to be said in like 2-3 minutes. Maybe you could do a weekly or monthly music news recap or something
