Thumbs UP! Finally, instructions that make sense!
We're playing with a deck of "Skip-Bo Junior" cards, but we'll be playing regular SB now that we have an actual set of instructions (this video). The included game directions left us, more than once, asking "what do we do now?"
From what I can tell, the only difference in a Jr deck is that it goes from 1 to 10, not 12.

Thanks for the vid from so many years ago, it seems to clear up a few questions for me. I noticed you alternated where you got cards from to make the piles, and arranged your discard piles in a staggered way so as to see all the cards beneath the top one, whereas we piled ours in stacks following the instruction diagram. I like your way better. My game's instructions seemed to suggest the following (wrong?) rules:
1)We have to play all the cards we possibly can on our go, and not hold some back,
2)Once we start using the stock pile, we have to draw from it until we can't, and no alternating between hand, stock and discard piles,
3)Given the above, using cards up from the stock pile is mostly a luck-based thing - the only way to draw more than one and thus get ahead is to get lucky.
4)Also, the game played this way feels like making the central piles a big distraction as this isn't directly the goal of the game at all - we can forget the goal is to lose the stock pile while making piles of 1 to 12s in the centre.
I wonder if the rule versions have differed a lot over the years - I have a 50th anniversary edition set of rules that use the word CAN a lot, which led to us using the above rules as a result. No mention of holding back cards for later, and not clear on alternating ways to make piles being okay or not. Hoping playing your way will make for something more strategic.

    Excellent tutorial 👏🏼👏🏼
We’re new to this game and our question is:
What occurs when neither a Skip Bo or “1” are not dealt in either of the five cards distributed and not on players discard piles because there are no discard piles? How do you go about getting a Skip Bo or “1” to start the game?

    • @sassybanjo3586

This happened to us when we played it for the first time today. What we did is just continued to discard and draw one card each until somebody got to Skipbo or a 1.

  • @WordofAdviceTV
    @WordofAdviceTV  8 років тому +4

We dealed out 15 cards into our stock piles in this example. Took us about 20 minutes to finish the game. Very fun game and easy to learn! Let me know if you still have some questions about the gameplay! We did the tutorial on the most popular way to play Skip-Bo. There are other ways to play like team Skip-Bo or Points Skip-Bo. This version is our favorite though!

Dealing 5 to each player at the start does not seem to be in the official rule book. As per the rule book, everybody starts with empty hands and first player draws 5, and if he can play all 5 from his hand, he can immediately draw another 5 etc. either way, it’s fun and thanks for the video.

Impossible in the decks I’ve seen.
1 through 4 are blue, 5-8 are green, and 9-12 are red.
So you’d never be allowed to play a 5.

  • @ajcoopa

Quick question - on the first round, if you do not have a "1" of a "SkipBo" on your stock or in your hand, does the game just go around player to player, discarding one and redrawing on your next turn until someone can start a build pile?

What are the rules for building and discard piles? Do card colors or value matter?

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  6 років тому +4

      - In skip-bo, card colors and values do not matter but the building piles do need to be in sequential order.
      - At the end of every turn you must discard one card into a discard pile
      - You can have up to 4 discard piles
      - On your turn you can use as many cards as you want from the discard piles
      - You have to use the top cards of the piles first before you can use the ones underneath.
Let me know if there is still something unclear, have fun! :)

From what I've seen, the colors simply distinguish if the card's number is low (1-4), medium (5-8), or high (9-12).
This makes it a little easier when looking for the right card to add to a stack.

Another twist to the game to make it less boring and slow paced: Deal 5 cards to each player face down, all players look at their hand at the same time, they all start playing at the same time, in this game you decide if the sequence on a building pile has to be the same color. Everyone can play over every building pile, until no moves can be made (not ignoring the 1 card that has to be discarded) then you deal another 5 cards, and so on. That makes it frenetic, just like Dutch Blitz but a different version. The winner is whoever gets rid of the stock pile first (just as original skip-bo)

This game is too random and it is super annoying. Here are some ways to balance the game and reduce chance :
    - The player who starts is the one with the biggest number in his stockpile
    - Ability to automatically discard any same number than the reserve card (without endind the turn)
    - Ability to discard 2 identical cards (or even more: 3/4/5)
(Also try this : Anyone can use anyone discard pile)
Everyone changed Uno Rules to make it better, I don't see why we shouldn't do it with Skip-Bo.

Major debate in my family about the discard pile: in your video it says that you MUST discard at the end of your turn, after you’ve exhausted your turn or you want to end your turn. My mother in law says that at the beginning of your turn - if you don’t have something to play or you want to end your turn then you discard. But if you do play cards you don’t have to discard… who is right? I mean my mother in law is “always right” but really who’s playing the game right?

THIS GAME, PLAYED BY THE DIRECTIONS IS BORING AT BEST! (unless you are young or playing with someone young or old)
Try this version... REVERSE SKIP-BO! Its played just as shown in the video but with a twist! Instead of just creating building piles that go from 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 and so on to 12.... try this. Building piles still start with 1 but from there you can play a 2 or a 12. So you can go 1 then 12 then 11 then 10 then 11 then 10 again! What this does it to open up the dynamics of the game. No longer will you be playing a simple game of "checker" but now the new version of REVERSE SKIP-BO is like playing "chess"

You can have up to 4 discard piles.
There is no limit to how many cards you can have in the discard piles.
Every turn you must put 1 card into a discard pile.
You can use as many discard cards as you want during your turn to help you get rid of your stock pile,
BUT you can only use the top card of each discard pile.

Word of Advice TV when you discard a card does it have to go in ascending or descending order, and what about when I have a discard card that doesn't go in order with any of the piles and I have no more spaces? So I set it anywhere ? If so can I use the pile behind it ? Or do I have to get rid of that one card first before using the pile ?

You can discard any card you want, in any order. It does not need to be ascending or descending. For example: in one pile you can put down a 9, then a 5 on top of it, then a 12, then a 2. You can kind of see an example of that at 2:58
And yes, in each discard pile, you must use the top card(the most recent one you put in that pile) before you can use the one under it. You cannot take any cards from the bottom.

I don’t think your playing it right. You can only have one pile by the deck.
