I made these STUNNING kitchen counter tops (TWICE)

- SO it turned out I mixed the epoxy resin to the wrong ratio on the first attempt. I do prefer the look of the second attempt though. It would have been a nightmare to try to remove all the bad resin and would have had to ruin the burned wood effect so had to start from scrath unfortunately.
Still workign on the rest of the kitchen but hopefully wont be another 2 months before the next video :)
I post weekly updates to patreon thiese days id you are interested- / newyorkshireworkshop

I love when people include their mistakes… makes the video 100x more interesting
How encouraging to see that such a fine craftsman can publicly admit a mistake and then overcome it and produce such a great result. This is inspiring for us ordinary amateur woodworkers. Thank you so much
I was taught years ago that the hallmark of true craftsman is not that he never makes mistakes, but rather that he can deal with and correct the mistakes that he inevitably makes.
Show me someone who never made a mistake and I'll show you a liar.
@@TheDoosh79 I found a great quote on the back of a box of matches when I was a kid: "The man who can't make a mistake can't do anything".
@@harveychuckles3780But even doing anything can be a mistake ;)
Glad you clarified the difference between 2x4 and 4x2. Cheers.
🤣🤣🤣 I'm with you. Don't get him started on Aluminium
I have been in the building trade for 15 years and never knew!
😂
Yet no mention of left handed chisels.
Incredible and the patience of a saint. After the first cock up I would have got Wickes in and gone down the pub.🤣
We dont hear the 60 hours of screaming and cursing the resin gods that was cut
@Malphazar That's why I don't film the restoration of my 105 series Alfa, most of the footage would be me cursing, the engineers, the previous owner, myself, a crappy tool. For hours.😂😊
@@Malphazar kids, cover your ears for a short while...
Amazing work as usual. Your planning and execution are impeccable, but great pity about the resin fail on the first version. But credit to you for persisting and winning, and having the honesty and guts to share your fail as well as your success. All credit to you.
Incredible as always. My heart broke for you when I saw the first attempt wasn’t going to make it. Do you have a second channel where you are uploading the 30 min video of you pacing and cursing? Seriously, I am blown away by your craftsmanship, patience, and creativity.
I just imagined him, once the camera stopped rolling, getting a huge lump hammer,& knocking the B'Jesus out of the worktops...! 😅 I'd have paid good money to see that ..! 😂
Mostly the patience.
OK, sure, the crativity too, but the patience. Ermagerd the patience.
Honestly I'm glad the first attempt failed because that second attempt just looks so much better.
Nice work pal.
I like that herringbone pattern but this looks socmuch better.
@@vonHannersdorfme too
Couldn't agree more. Second is definitely the nicer of the two.
Veneer looks amazing, think I prefer it too ❤
Me too.
I find it difficult on UA-cam to find a video any more satisfying than watching this craftsman ply his trade/s
It takes a brave man to fess up to a huge mistake like that. However, out of the ashes came a thing of beauty. Extraordinary work.
I was wondering why the gap was so long between videos and now i wonder no more... NYW never takes prisoners, but in this case the prisoners were, shot, lined up again, shot once more, then fed into a meat grinder and rendered into a fine paste, which is presumably what he used as polishing compound... Holy crap.
Absolutely. It would have been really easy to just show the version that worked, but I loved seeing the process of the first attempt and how different the final worktops are.
@@cv990a4 lol
My morning just got a lot better...
I couldn’t agree more! This is absolutely stunning! Well done!!!!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Nice work ❤ looks great
Both efforts were gorgeous. I cannot imagine the disappointment & frustration over the first's problems. Thanks for sharing this journey with us all, Russ. You are fun to watch and your skills & talents leave me gobsmacked.
Thank you so much for keeping the fail in the video. I worked on an endgrain table for 6 Weeks and it was done and looked beautiful and then it started to earp and fall apart. I was so sad, but hey the deck table I built from cutoffs of the deck while I was waiting for the glue to dr between steps I still as new after 7 years. To fail means to learn. And the new Island looks fantastic.
Even though I knew what had gone wrong with the pallet version from the weekly Patrion updates, my heart still broke for you (again) when the resin didn't set. I wouldn't have had the wear withal to do it twice, so my hat is definitively off. As always, the meticulous way you go about your process and attention to detail make me want to up my cabinet making game. These videos are worth waiting for and represent an oasis of calm and considered contemplation in my hectic life. Thank you for sharing your projects with us.
I admire your perseverance and your strive for perfection. Anyone can make a mistake, it's how you deal with it that matters most. The second attempt does look fantastic.
You are a rare individual. I'm always impressed with your patience and determination with these projects. You genuinely seem to be a "Jack of all trades"!
Master of all trades, imo
I would have completely fallen apart, but that's why you're the genius you are.
Once again .. enthralling. !!!
Thank you
Sir you are the epitome of perseverance...How many times would I have given up... Its a must see video. Not only for the many skills, but also for the humble and yet powerful lessons. Bravo!
2 Epoxy flood coat tricks I learned. First is that some heat guns shoot FOD/particles into the epoxy, so I only use propane torches to pop the bubbles. Second is spraying the surface with ultra-pure (non-contaminated) acetone , which thins the epoxy without using heat, allowing the bubble walls to pop.
Either way, I'm decades behind your skills, and I love your work. I learn a lot with every video, and my vision also widens. Thank you for sharing your epic works!
That first table was going to be gorgeous! Such a shame! I would've been so angry!!! You nailed it with both designs. Unbelievable work as usual. You are the most talented and skilled wood working artist i've seen on youtube. Can't wait for your videos to come out! God bless!
Your craftsmenship and patience are unsurpassed, phenomenal. Love the second go more then the first. I watched this as I was fuming over a very simple project that is going sideways......great timing.
The first one having to be tossed was heartbreaking but that second one is so beautiful it was honestly a blessing in disguise
Indeed. I thought it was fantastic. The comment about the diamond pattern "not working" or something because of the figured wood grain? Naah. It worked beautifully, and several orders of magintude better than anything I could have dreamed up.
Definitely one of your most interesting videos. I wish I had half of your patience, and a quarter of your skills. The eucalyptus veneer actually looks amazing, so perhaps it was worth having to do it twice.
Absolute craftsmanship at all levels illustrating so many techniques to construct bespoke kitchen countertops. Detailing all construction aspects of the initial intended herringbone design and the issues resulting from the resin pour was inspirational in itself. The veneered version too was highly informative and again demonstrated your attention to detail in the pursuit of joinery perfection. Wonderful creative content as per usual - such a joy to watch and admire!!
Oooh, nice shot with the scrap wood and the ominous wood burner. Subtle terror is the best terror :-)
I was so sorry that your first attempt failed. I loved the idea of the recycled pallets. Your end result was excellent as always. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the kitchen build. Thanks for sharing. Cheers. Jim
The first attempt looked fantastic, the second is awesome, I don't know how you keep your cool, it's not only the designing, it is so much time that goes into creating it, plus the cost. I thought that you would have taken the first worktops back to your workshop and put them on the CNC and machined them back to the wood. You have the patience of a saint.
Wow wow…. Welcome back….. the tops are magnificent…. More please ⚒️🔨🔥👍
MAN! am i glad to see you back and making videos! One of the most talented people on You Tube for sure! EXCELLENT!
I can tell y’all right now….that final wet sand and buffing it out with the compound…..that is how you finish the top coat on a car!! NICE JOB!!! Really loved watching the process, totally appreciate that you showed how imperfect things in life can be and WOW!!! Beautiful work!!!!
Mate I haven’t watched that much drama on Netflix. Churned my stomach!
You’re a marvel.
Thank you, the epoxy mistake is exactly the type of mistake I would make. Thanks for showing it and your patience in accepting it and moving on. Like someone else said, I think I would have gone looking for a pub. Your patience and the beauty of the finished top is the sign of a true craftsman.
It's good to see that your humble enough to show you're human, make mistakes and overcome them. Sometimes they are dumb mistakes, but it happens to the best of us. Good on you. Very nice in the end.
Your house is going to look like a master woodworker lives there.
Thats because a master woodworker do live there.
Beautiful work again 😮Love to watch you work. The chair reminds me of an old antique rocker I had that was my grandmother’s. I loved it so much and my kids destroyed it 🤦🏻♀️ Broke my heart. Wish I had your knowledge, experience and patience then. Thank you for sharing! God Bless
OMFW the patience.
I take my hat off to you, several times over, for having the mental stamina and endurance to do this. I'd have given up by the first fail, sold the house and moved into a caravan. Well done. No, _extraordinarily_ well done. Staggeringly, astonishingly well done. Thanks for sharing.
Kudos for the great craftsmanship and honest reveal when things go awry. Watching you work so patiently is more relaxing than a fine wine!
I have to say I am so happy I subbed you channel many months ago. Just by watching you work I learn what patience is and shows me that giving up, even yuu really mess up, is not an option.
Thank you!
A superb piece of art you have made :)
I just love watching your work. Amazing stuff. And thanks for not adding music or pointless commentary to your videos.
It gives us mortals hope to see a gifted master craftsman like you make an occasional mistake. Beautiful project! Enjoyed much.
1:09:04 lmao
I truly admire your patience and levelheadedness in the face of trouble
You are so methodical and precise that it is impossible to fail, and the result is always perfect, whatever you do! Great job!
Good to see you back, sir.
As a Lancastrian, it takes a lot to say that.
When I keep trying to switch to full-screen on a video that is already full-screen, you know you've got my attention.
I'm certain that this counter top is worth more than my entire kitchen... and the result is absolutely brilliant! You are a special kind of crazy, the good kind! Never change!
I just realized what I like about your shop and channel so much. You have sawdust on the floor and your clothes and your long term wood storage is dusty too, reminds me of my shop.
I make strip built wooden kayaks with resin/fiberglass overlay. One of the ways I prevent bubbles is to make sure the shop is very warm when I lay the first coat, and then let the temperature fall. This prevents the off gassing of bubbles. Beautiful piece.
Unbelievable patience, skill & knowledge have resulted in absolutely brilliant counter tops. Also amazing grit & determination shown on this project. SO impressive & thanks for sharing. Cheers, Don from South Australia..
I was going to go out and get an early start building a fence this morning, but my priorities have changed seeing this video notification pop up! I've recently been rewatching a lot of your videos whilst eagerly anticipating the next one. Made some coffee and toast and I'm ready to watch!
It is cool if a man know his priorities. 👌🏻😂
I’m in awe of your patience and workmanship. And I bloody envy your wife lol. I encourage others to watch your videos. Love your work.
The the van Gogh of woodworking...and still has both ears...well done!
😂😂😂
Just love your workmanship, and patience. Did a similar thing to a kitchen door we I was doing our first old house up in the 60's in Higherford. Old school car painting, heaps of lacquer then Wet n Dry it back and the polish. Finished up looking like glass, but quite impractical in the kitchen as it showed up every single mark. cheers from NZ
Gratitude for sharing the single-worker ideas like taping down the lofting sticks when applying the large veneer sheet!
I had very important things to do this morning. I think I'll save them for later!😏
I was planning on being busy too, but ya got to get your priorities right. Coffee - check, fags - check, 2 hours blocked out - check… press play button! 👍😁
My heart sank for you, all the work you put into the first set of counter tops. However I thinks the second one is better. You have truly created a work of art in your kitchen. Absolutely beautiful!
stunning. absolutely stunning. so sorry the first version didn't work out. it was fantastic. but as we say in this business: shite happens. brilliant job, mate.
Well Actually. Just Wow. Probably my favorite build you've done. Great techniques I haven't seen used together. My four year old went WHOA I WANT ONE OF THOSE
Bloody Hell. I’m exhausted just watching…
You’re a true craftsman and I for one salute you!
Perseverance and stamina mixed with art, craftsmanship and unyielding commitment to quality!
Honestly, you have the patience of a saint. Chapeau.
This is absolutely amazing work! I cannot even begin to imagine the number of hours this took, and the patience of a Ssaint when things go awry. You are a master craftsman.
I could watch you working wood all day . Stunning work.
Gran, gran trabajo. Mucha sabiduria, paciencia y talento para su eleboraciòn. Como de costumbre excelente trabajo.
Un abrazo grande desde Argentina.
Beautiful as always, and you have way more patience than I do. Liked your quote at the beginning of this video.
Kudos for going the second round and having success. It looks wonderful, I can't wait to see more of the kitchen fitout.
I think they are the most beautiful countertops that I have EVER seen!
You have the patience of a saint 😊
You can’t beat experience, even when things don’t go your way. The second version looks glorious 👌🏻
As a mere mortal, I’m in awe of the works you produce. And to learn that you too make the odd mistake …well there is hope for the rest of us!
Admirable tu trabajo, honorable y valiente lo que expones. Eres un gran ejemplo para todos que buscamos la perfección y tú eres un gran referente, digno y meticuloso. Saludos cordiales de un chileno viviendo en Colombia....
Absolutely brilliant.”You have the patience of Job”. You also have great skill and ability, well done it looks amazing 👍👍
Hello, I love how you two toned the furniture I love the stain colors too and the wheels pulled it all together it looks so amazing. thank you for sharing it ...I just love your work...
Your resolve is incredible. Such a shame the first top didn’t work out, but good to show how real things are and not everything goes right. Everything you put your hand to is amazing to watch and you must put a huge amount of effort in, hopefully you get the same enjoyment as a lot of us do watching your work.
Brilliant. First time I have watched your channel, but not the last. Subscribed......
Was already waiting for a new video. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Really appreciate the way you show your process, warts and all! The end result is (I think, at least) worth all your trials before. Great video, as always, Russ! I'd still rather watch you for an hour-plus than many Hollywood blockbusters.
Great work, Russ.
Your videos are a rare but welcome treat, sir!
Every time I say to myself “Why’s he doing that?” Or “Oh, he’s done that wrong” I know I need to pay careful attention because I’m going to learn something.
Another beautiful job. I really appreciate that you showed when things didn’t work out.
TRULY BRILLIANT!!!, as is all your work. The detail and time spent on this project must have been a bit frustrating for you I would imagine?. Thanks for making my Saturday, and I concur with ALL the comments you get!. Long may you continue to bring us a view of your never-ending array of talent!.. God bless you and your family.
Oh my goodness ' patience is a virtue ' and you have plenty of that. I don't know what you were like off camera though lol. It turned out wonderfully, thanks for letting us watch.
Well this one was a rollercoaster. Your patience is exceptional.
Superb recovery. We have all made mistakes, most of mine have not been noticed except that they are there in my mind. My one and only epoxy veneered coffee table is now approaching fifty and to be honest I have never liked it. Sun has lifted some edges but it has no age even though the coloured veneers have faded. Great video thank you for posting.
Amazing as a craftsman, honest and very patient. So this was Part 1 and Part 2 . . . can't wait for Part 3 the wife prefers stone
Glad to see I'm not the only one to make mistakes!!! You sir are an artist with wood!!
Absolutely incredible Russ! I hope you take on an apprentice as some point, you're a master and your skills should be passed on to the next generation!
That's what I call thinking on your feet. Great that you had the courage to show a pretty huge foopah. Lovely work as always.
Skill from God, patience of an angel, equanimity of a samurai. A great combination of qualities! Thank you, very interesting and instructive.
Skill is acquired. Not given by some fantasy figure.
@@kattihatt You had to say it, didn't you. Feel better now?
@@Thepourdeuxchanson you had to reply to me, didnt you? Feel better now?
For the love of God, settle down sister.
Your work is amazing, but your patience is beyond mention.
Well thanks for raising the bar just once again
Outstanding. While the originals looked fantastic, the second attempt in my view, were even better. I am sure I speak for many when I state that I am impatient for your videos, but I know how long editing takes, let alone making these masterpieces. Sublime effort!
At 1st i thought why go to all that bother for worktops, but after all this time of watching your channel i should have known better. Even after the trouble with the air bubbles, you appear to calmly carry on with the job in hand, and come up with another solution, that gives us more unexpected design ideas.
Absolutely stunning job you really are a master of your craft
The patients you have is on another level amazing work as always
I’ve been meaning to/wanting to tell you how much of a better tradesman (I’m just a kitchen/bathroom fitter btw) you’ve made me… I’ve never been a bodger… I’m way better than that… but you’ve made me seek a higher and (try to) achieve the next level of standard. I always ask myself if I’m teetering on the ‘is that good enough’ brink… what would NYW think.
Also you’ll be my go to guy if I ever need a body desposing of.
Been a massive fan since the turntables… thanks for the vids and the class.
This guy has inhuman patience. Hats off man.
WOW WOW WOW Love the veneer so much more then the original idea.
That's some amount of work. I had a few sphincter tightening moments watching so I can only imagine the nerves it took to make that. Brilliant work as usual
Bonjour Monsieur, vos réalisations sont tout simplement magnifiques! Je vous suis depuis un certain temps, à chaque fois je suis ...émerveillé!
Withe vacuum table and release film I am getting a Baumgartner restoration vibe. Awe inspiring work!
outstanding patience and even more skill to pull that off - nicely done sir
You really must have the patience of Job! Fantastic viewing as always, thank you.
Beautiful work. Love learning with you, thanks.
The second version is WOW!! So much work, such a great result.
Gorgeous woodwork , it is a pleasure to watch you so intensely dedicated.
