Because when the term started being used (late 19th century) that meant you could use a semi-automatic sliding breech on the gun, which actually was significantly faster than the interrupted thread breeches on older guns

Hey, you were wondering if HESH would bounce like it did in the game. HESH is BD (Base Detonating), rather than PD (Point Detonating) as in an HE round. BD rounds are prone to duds. If you hit a target with a BD fused projectile at an angle, it may not impart enough inertia to the fuse (worse, off centre inertial forces might jam the fuse mechanism).

The FV4005 not the only tank affected by the terrible hesh nerf. I remember back in the day when the Vickers was first released and what a beast it was with its hesh round. Until then Tigers ran riot dominating everything. Then the Vickers turned up with good mobility and fast reload and its hesh round and the Tiger dominance was broken and they screamed blue bloody murder. It was brilliant. But then gaijin nerfed hesh. It was a sad day.

For all the downfalls of FV4005, it now has mediocre gun: sound, muzzle flash, damage. Which is ridiculous, considering it is the biggest gun in the game. Edit: also it can have bomb explosion effect, for more satisfaction.
The thing that crippled HESH the most is when they changed it so the direction of the spalling was determined by the angle of the plate it hit. That basically took away it's only benefit of being very effective against the sloped armor of soviet tanks.
my MCC (Master Chief Collection) application was done loading and at the same time it played the part where you didn't destroy the FIAT, resulting in a holy bounce.

My plan was everyone who watches this video loads up full ammo in their Tanks when you hop in WT so if Phly is in your game and kills you, he will get a big boom and be also happy. Little late to the party but that shell would absolutely not bounce off that plate. In fact its kind of an issue with squash heads when attempting to use them as assault tanks/bunker busters. If it clips anything at all it will detonate. The squash head mechanic is completely separate to the fuse. And lets be honest, if you are hit by 183mm shell coming at you SIDEWAYS, its going to penetrate your tin rough like it was paper and even if some how it didn't... you are not going to be "completely fine".
If you wondering what the thumbnail is... Well, a Maus and a FV4005 had a son, but FV4005 drank a lot during pregnancy, and it just so happens they live near Pripyat
That HESH round would do more than the 152 that was feared by all german tankers, because it would bend the upper plate so badly inwards that the welds would break off and everything inside that had something that could leak would. Also if it hit the turret it would rip the turret clean off. HESH would ram that upper plate on a Panther through the crew compartment and smash into the firewall of the engine bay so hard even the engine would break. It was designed to one shot IS-3 and IS-8 from any and all angles and it would have done so. Only spaced armor and heavy duty spall liners implemented later on could provide counter to HESH in smaller calibers, the 183mm would probably still caused the target tank to be abandoned or be forced to retreat due to multiple subsystems having been destroyed or disabled.
I was gifted the A.C.IV and I thought it was gonna be worse than I thought. I only got it to try out the vehicle that inspired my design. IT'S A BEAST no one realizes where to shoot it! I'd say it's because I'm a bush monster, but the 2nd and 3rd and 1th shots should at least accidentally hit the weak spots XD

The KV-2 has the same problem at 3.7. While it does have decently effective armor, it has a 30 second reload and is incredibly inconsistent as well. And if any loaders get injured, the reload process has to restart, no matter how close the gun was to being loaded. The inconsistent thing is a huge issue when you don't kill, as an enemy can fix their gun barrel, transmission, and track before you can reload. Realism amirite. Back when it could shoot through a Jumbo UFP it was good, if situational. Now it's just... why.
So in answer to the question that Phly didn't really want an answer to: yes the HESH would bounce at extreme angles because unlike HEAT it works better when fired from a rifle so the round would be spinning. It looked like it was the body of the shell rather than the head that hit it so the plastic explosive wouldn't have flattened out and triggered the fuse. If he had been even a fraction of a second faster you would have got the boom you were looking for which means Italian vehicles obviously need a minor acceleration buff so that the forty-oh-five can be good. Or something.

I often use it in british top tier, mostly on close quarters maps. Aim for turrets and tracks and you insta kill everything.
