    I recently picked up a Schott 118 Perfecto which turned out to be from the mid 1980s, which is pretty amazing as it has no damage anywhere and could easily pass for a jacket just a few years old. The leather looked like it could be left as it was, but I decided to give it some attention as a way to make it mine. I picked up the Otter wax care kit seeing as Schott stock that themselves. I used the salve so far and have given it a day’s rest hanging. It looks so much better after the treatment and smells amazing. Genuinely a pleasant scent to it. I will wait a while but plan to use some of the oil on it next. Interestingly, the older 118s don’t have a longer body like they do now.

      Would love to have a 118 with the shorter body, congrats on the find. I forgot that Schott carries the Otter Wax kit, but always a good idea to use the product a maker uses or recommends. Will put otter wax on my personal wishlist. Thanks Dave

    Because I own a lot of Vanson leather jackets and because Vanson's own leather conditioner is a liquid rather than a paste it typically takes me about an hour to condition a jacket. With a liquid conditioner--which runs--I put down newspapers first, and then work the conditioner into the leather a liitle at a time using fingers. What takes the most fussing are the nooks and crannies--i.e., the sleeve gussets, the pocket zipper rolled leather coverings, the inside pocket leather facings and jacket interior facings, the action-back folds around the shoulders, the epaulets, underneath the main zipper on the left side of a criss-zip jacket, and the inside of the collar and its related facings.
    The trick with a liquid conditioner that runs easily is to not get it onto the fabric jacket lining and fabric pocket linings, and to some extent you can bend the leather as you go, creating temporary folds in the jacket shell that will hold a small reservoir of conditioner that you can dip fingers into to apply the conditioner to the surrounding areas. You could also apply with a cloth dipped into a bowl of liquid conditioner though that will waste some of it inside an absorbent cloth. Most leather conditioners are fairly kind to hands, but a bit hard to get off entirely with soap and water.
    For older jackets with zippers that stick or move with difficulty you can use a product such as Zipper Ease (wax crayon) rubbed directly onto the closed zipper teeth. After application work the zipper up and down a few times. That wax won't hurt the leather if you get some on the jacket shell around the zippers areas. You can find Zipper-Ease here:
    www.amazon.com/JCS-ZIPPER-EASE-Pencil-Zipper-Lubricant/dp/B00GJRBH0U/ref=sr_1_7?crid=1LCLFD5DVVZSM&keywords=zipper+ease+wax+stick&qid=1686006878&sprefix=zipper+ease%2Caps%2C123&sr=8-7
    When you wipe down the conditioned jacket after it dries you may want to wipe the jacket's snaps/hardware to remove any lingering conditioner that got onto them. Green 'gunk' that accumulates around the edges of snaps over time is corrosion of the copper content within the hardware by long-term reaction with chemicals/oils in the adjacent leather itself. Brass hardware tarnishes easily this way; nickel/chrome-plated snaps a little less easily. You can remove 'green gunk' (before you condition the jacket leather) with Q-tips dipped in rubbing alcohol and/or with your thumbnail beneath an old undershirt. If you want to brighten up tarnished brass hardware--you may not want to do that as it may remove lacquer present on the brass, resulting in cleaned but duller brass--use a Q-tip with a SMALL amount of your preferred brass polish. Check metal polish product labels first to see what metals that polish is recommended for, plus for how to remove the polish (try to keep it off the leather) once it's done its job. An alternative is to have old brass or nickel/chrome snaps removed/replaced with new ones of the same size at your local leatherworker's shop if the old snaps are too scratched up or corroded.
    GREAT VIDEO, Del, and I agree that conditioning a leather jacket too often is not a great thing. Some jackets that have rarely or never been conditioned can be greatly helped by conditioning. You can even get the leather lacings used on some jackets to respond well to conditioning (soak them in a small bowl of conditioner first--which may take on some leather dye/color from the laces--then apply the excess conditioner to the jacket itself later if the color isn't too mismatched). Laces that have been dried out FOREVER or which have been exposed to lots of heat may not respond as well, and in that case can be replaced with new laces cut to the same length.

      @DudsByDel  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the detailed response. Haven’t used the liquid kind yet but sounds like a hassle heh.
      I do have a little tube of the zip ease, Langlitz included it along with the leather dressing. They recommend putting it on new jacket since the unused zipper teeth can have some rough edges
      Have seen that green corrosion on used jackets for sale but didn’t connect it with conditioner, makes sense!

      @@DudsByDel As a kid I played Trumpet and use to see similar 'green sludge' on the slides whenever I cleaned the Trumpet, LOL. Even leather jackets that haven't been conditioned at all may corrode brass hardware over time due to the chemicals and oils put into the leather at the tannery.

      Hey man thanks we’re doing as good as can be expected with heat index up to 120. If the shoulders are a little tight you can stretch by getting the shoulders wet, stretching them (perhaps by wearing and flexing a bit) then stuffing with towels or something to keep under tension while drying.

      Depends on the jacket and use? Langlitz recommends using their conditioner on a new jacket from them right away. But they are also selling motorcycle jackets that are expected to be exposed to all the elements. Most jackets shouldn’t need to be conditioned immediately (or for a long time)
