Wishing you both the best, looking forward to future videos of you guys fixing all the flaws you’ve found so far. That said I hope the price you paid was fair considering it’s true condition.
Hilux's are great vehicles, I own the same model except 2015 extra cab SR5. First rule, never lift them any more than 3 inches without proper UCA and camber compenents to avoid body modifications. Second rule, never go bigger than a 33in tire with standard diffs and gear ratios Third rule, keep the engine stock (except for intake and exhaust) they will keep going for many decades to come. It wont be fast but it will be reliable and theres nothing cool about being broken down on the side of the road Fourth rule, never buy a second hand vehicle from Thailand... Period! Fifth rule, always help a fellow Hilux owner out... If you need parts from Australia just shout out. Happy to help with any 80 series or KUN26r parts you may need. Seems like you and the fellow have a project on your hands and are going to need parts BIGTIME. My suggestion would be lift the cabin off of it and go from there. It will give you access to all the hard to reach places that need welding ect and also access to mount the new HVAC system plus will give you the opportunity to inspect the complete chassis for more cracks and fractures. Let me know if you need the workshop manual, I'll email it through. BTW, glad you bought another Toyota!
Exactly what I was going to say and more. Particularly the importance of geometry of lifts past 3 inches, camber etc etc. I am not a fan of spring over conversions and would looking to cut that kludge out. On the plus side, no deep rust, a relatively simple vehicle to modify (properly) and a wealth of knowledge and parts here in Australia. Terrain Tamer and the like will do a full kit for the front diff, make sure the shimming is right or your new seals will leak. Should come good once you pluck the junk.
I’ve been in a situation like this with a sports car when I was younger. Bought it from a car yard sight unseen online. Looked great in pictures but it was a mess when it arrived. I worked on it and spent a lot of money to still have it not work good in the end. Learned my lesson finally and just sold it as is to someone else cheap. Should’ve cut my losses sooner and would’ve lost less. In these situation, I would always just cut my losses sooner and get on with something else.
Hi Monique. Greetings from Oz. Looks like you have a lot of work to do on the 'new' Hi-Lux. Good luck with the restoration . Looking forward to the arrival of the LandCruiser replacement. Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. You'll need more Vegemite to see you through !
Don’t be so disappointed, it’s in pretty cool condition! You’ll fix it pretty fast! Last year I’ve bought a grand Vitara 3 door from 1999 and it is really disaster!! I was thinking it was a fantastic bargain, but after a few rallies the frame has cracked down…or I actually don’t know how the main part of the cassis called in English, but except that I had to swap gearbox, front axle and some others parts…and it is still not working…your Hilux is so much beautiful! I was always dreaming about Hilux Vigo with 2 solid axles😍! Hope you will fix it soon!🔥🚙🤠
I own a Vigo 2013 model with 1 KD engine swapped in These are ridiculously tough vehicles but yeah you need to put in some work in your truck b4 it will be pleasure to drive Once the maintenance is under control these things are bullet proof
I have a 2013 3 litre turbo diesel Hilux I bought new. Drivetrain is stock with some body mods but it has been very reliable. Non-standard, highly modified vehicles are always a risk when used for overlanding/touring and you’ve compounded that with an import. You’re a brave lady 😁
What an interesting video. Of course, we always know of "buyer beware" but it sure seems that misleading info and pictures were intentional. I also noted your different demeanor when telling your rollover story. All good. I love that you are a fabricator. I grew up in a shop with my dad but didn't follow him in that line of work. Keep plugging forward.
The algorithm made me rediscover the channel. I was watching your videos during hard lockdown and it (video recommendations) kind of dissappeared. Subscribing so that I don't lose the channel again. Last I could remember was when there was the whole roof rack load rating drama. Edit: Just checked, that was about a year ago when the Dodge Ram video came out. When scrolling through the channel I was sad to see the Cruiser got in a accident, at least it looks like nothing happened to you. 😀
Huge flex to drive one of those in Canada. Though I have heard it's fairly simple to import cars into Canada. Would probably attract more attention if you visit the US. Geez it looks bad, in South Africa the ones that look bad are from working hard and nit being taken care of. The mods is done so poorly on this Hilux. I was gonna say at least the Solid axle swap looks good.... Then you showed the close ups.. 😬😬😬😬 I would leave the bonnet stay in, in case the gas struts go bad. Then you still have the option to keep it open. I heard of the DRL thing from Dan Grec (the road choose me) when there was article about him in our local 4wd magazine (when tge company was still alive). He said its a good idea to disable the lights when travelling other parts of the world. Especially rural parts of Africa. People aren't familiar with that feature and people regularly stopped him or pointed out that his lights were on. Which quickly became annoying.
It looks like a common problem on 4wds when people rebuild hubs they usually mess it up. My instincts told me to check it first before driving it too much. I've seen many horror stories on UA-cam about axles. Just my opinion, but it's probably not the best idea to drive a heavily modified 4wd for Overlanding. If something breaks you will have a hard time finding parts. Rather keep things simple. Still a cool hilux, but it looks like it needs a lot of work.
I bought a truck from there online also without seeing vehicle in person turn out it was a flooded vehicle had electrical problems... I learn the hardway but after days rewiring countless hours and money spent I'm quite happy with my hilux...hope your happy 😊
Definitely a project. Bought my grand wagoneer thinking it would be a daily until I brought it home. Still sitting on car stands. Hard finding the time. But there is two of you. More time to bond. Good luck
I once bought a used truck that looked really hot. It had a nice lift, nice wheels and tires, etc. TWO DAYS LATER, I was replacing the head gasket. It's always, buyer beware.
WoW ! the Toyota Hilux is a Beautiful truck. Wish you both all the Best in your quest for restoring and creating a Sustainable and Safe travelling vehicle. Monique I know you got this.. Your Awesome and you enjoy challenges 🥰🚙👍
Interesting purchase - I am on my 3rd import (Pajero, Prado and a Galloper) - One thing I have learned is that you should stear away from modified export units (Like you have discovered) as it seems that madified units are typically modified poorly. The Pajero was bone stock and was a dream - The Prado had a few small mods and was a week of evenings and two weekends to remove and make right and the Galloper was just a bloddy adventure to put back right.
I found out the hard way, in 1988 during a trip through the Andean mountains in Venezuela that a 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (made in Venezuela for the Venezuelan market) had no way of blowing air through to the defroster/windshield setting. It was vents were sealed shut from the factory. Unlike your situation of exporting the truck to a different geography, this is a pretty big fail IMHO, since the truck needed it that rainy day in December, and it happened within the same territory the truck was designed to operate in.
Here in Borneo Malaysia we have a lot of Hilux converted axles to LC80 but here are completely converted to the fullest and the mechanics done it so well! I’ve never seen this kind of job too much wrecked things on the welding jobs! I hope you can fix it well. I also hope i can share you the pictures of that Hilux have been converted like this.
I'll recommend you to sell it people who'll use it near the equator, idk if its common, but vehicles are customized to fit the weather zones they're meant to be used. No heat is needed in it in Thailand. Too much to do and pay for conversion, else you'll either pay alot, or be uncomfortable from mid autumn to late spring.
That toyota hilux is pretty nice Truck, regular maintenance is not priority one coming from Thailand ! Recommendation, your better off going thru it all and fixing everything that needs fixing It's just more relaxing on those long road trips plus you'll get to learn a little about the Hilux Hopefully it's not so bad for repairs And I'm looking forward to you having a camping trip with the Hilux I think you'll enjoy it alot 👍
Why not buy a Tacoma or Tundra if you want a pick up trunk, Because of Diesel power? It is so hard to find parts and people to fix those kind the trucks, US Toyota dealer’s technicians don’t know how to fix it, it is a bad idea to use it in North America for overland but it is your money that you can do whatever you want.
There is a company in San Antonio, TX called Diesel Toyz that converts Tacomas, 4Runners and LC’s to diesel. They used to use D4D engines now I think they use the VM Motori diesels
@@Adventure_Rig sure diesels have a lot of low end toque but have no high end hose power, slow like hell when driving on the freeway, that’s why Toyota doesn’t import diesel to U.S because you are the only one buying it, if diesels are so good why European countries Abandon diesels
Well you have already bought the Hilux and I hope you got a good deal for it. Just have a few supplier from Thailand to where you can order all your parts for any repairs and maintenance. Looking forward to seeing you upgrading the Hilux
I have the same generation Hilux, but with the 1GR V6, they are an awesome vehicle when they're built right, but that one clearly wasn't. I always see those pictures of the huge lifts on Thai trucks, but never considered the kind of shortcuts they might take to do it.
Never need it? You have no idea 😆 people living in Canada need a full on HVAC system in our vehicles… you can survive without air conditioning in the tropics but no heater in the Great White North, good luck. ✌️🍁
Monique, you will be 40 when this truck became roadworthy and ready for safe overlanding... I, really, was under impression that you are looking for some brand new, shiny Toyota (Tundra maybe) and never in the wildest dreams would think you will be buying a right side steering, used, from Thailand pig with the lipstick, and without even seeing it, trusting a dude online... Wishing you two the best of luck and quick repair, but simply thinking it is neither going to be a quick nor a cheap one...
Had the same experience when I imported my hilux from Thailand, they swapped the tires and the facelift was hiding signs that the vehicles had front accident damage, alot of wiring hack job that I had to repair. Lesson learned, Never buy a modified vehicle
This looks like an episode of old Top Gear where they buy cars sight unseen on the internet and then go to some remote part of the world to so some challenges. LOL.
holy smokes, best of luck to you. but I would have bought a 100 series again, since you already know it and have some parts already or an 80 series, you have plenty of diesel ones up in CA. in your case I think you will have to work with what you got. fix the issues and you should have a decent truck to travel, if you were to do it again, would you import that particular hi-lux again?
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Soon you will be back on the road with a vehicle you know inside out. Best of luck and we look forward to your next step. 😻🤗
I just hope the car was cheap to balance out the repair costs a bit. I was surprised you bought this vehicle as you don't usually need a big lift and big tyres like that with your overlanding style. Good luck with the build.
In Australia and nz they have bracing kits you can buy for sas swap kits and it stiffens the welded on mounts might be worth looking into it plus you don't pass certification over here unless a registered welder carries out the work
Very nice truck. The Solid axle swap is a mod I would like to do to my 2008 Fortuner. The 1KD-FTE like to crack pistons and have injector issues. The rest of the engine is built well. A few suggestions from my side is definately replace with new and not rebuilt injectors and if you would like extra peace of mind, replace pistons as well. Toyota had a few revisions on pistons. I had a piston crack at 240 000km, wish I had trusted my gut feeling and replaced pistons earlier, as I was the 4th owner. When it cracks a piston, it really ruins the sleeve. 4 pistons would have been cheaper than resleeving and all the machine work that needs to be done. After about 240 000km and inspecting the sleeves that were not damaged, it would have done many more kms. It looked new inside. Definately do a intercooler upgrade or relocate it to the front. The top mount is too small and only half way effective at higher speeds. Great content and keep it up.
Moral of the story: Purchasing a car NOT PERSONALLY inspected from overseas is the cue 🤣😁 The OTD price, oceanic transport, import taxation cost as much as a new LAND CRUISER ??
Great hilux model, its unfortunate about the mods done, as soon as you mentioned where it was from I knew you would have death wobbles. they build the 4x4s for show only in those countries most of them don't even run front drive shafts and they never see any highways just the local cruise streets at 40kmph. As you would have seen when you were in Australia there are many many parts and quality aftemarket parts for the hilux, including heater cores. This build will be a good watch
Hilux is a ute vehicle quite well known in South East Asia and Thailand is widely known for modifying this beast into diesel drag race. It all depends on what is your cup of tea tho. ARB or ironman, as always Australia is the best quality. I dun think this car is meant for adventure vehicle as what u expect tho...Hilux is abit side off from the rear if u r planning to drive it off road...i highly recommend u to watch CB media channel
Yo yo yo!!!!Glad you are back and well Monique, and please know I hate to say it but you're not going to be able to salvage the rig.....Cool asit is. Please consider starting over.....just for your sanity alone. You got the skills and determination to do it, we all know that. But Dear Lord....Warm regards, Alan G
You should send your Landcruiser back to Australia and sell it. You'll make heaps back on it. All second hand 4X4's are making new car prices back here.
Not for the faint of heart purchasing a pre-owned vehicle from developing countries. Certainly their vehicle safety standards are less stringent (if at all in existence)… watching the modifications done on your HiLux made me cringe. It’s a good thing you guys are mechanically savvy to make all the corrections, but it’s going to be a big project. All the best. 👍🏼🍁
Thailand build and export the Hilux to Australia so they are capable of meeting stringent design rules. But this vehicle is most definitely not factory spec and I know nothing of their domestic licensing and modification rules.
@@twocrowsdown oh no doubt Thailand produces vehicles for export, but this particular truck had shoddy modifications that if inspected won’t get road safety certification like they have in Australia.
Could you let us know how much you paid? I have an auto Hilux invincible 2007 3.0ltr . They go for about £7-9k in the Uk with 140k miles on the clock. Very brave buying that online. To be fair the engines are normally bullet proof . Clean the chassis up and ditch all the crap and you’ll have a decent truck. Good luck .
So you have nothing. From what I saw in the video the fool who built this contraption f#$%@d-up everything he touched. Reliability is # 1. The "cool/unusual" factor is # last. Personally I'd either sell it to someone with the understanding that they are buying junk. I'd then go buy a new Tacoma or something used that I could at least take to a knowledgeable mechanic and get inspected. I'd then start fresh with no worries.
That’s crazy that someone would build something like that then sell it to an unsuspecting person. Real lowlife. Hope you get it all sorted out without it costing a fortune. Got my fingers crossed!!
You did not deserve the pain this vehicle is bringing you. If you really like it, hope your friends can take care of the issues without too much expense.
Hi beautiful. Ive seen your hi lux and think its not in good condition, you get it in Thailand as you mention I think its better buying in philippnes which already left hand drive hilux And i think little cheeper also than thai. They have many known company for the rig so takecare always
The only reason this hilux broke down on you is because it’s been fucked around with. From factory it would be fine depending on how it is treated. I’ve got an n70 and it’s been a work Ute and just been flogged it’s whole life. Not looked after at all. Runs like a charm. It’s been taken on the beach and not washed for a month more than once just because my dad didn’t have time when he had it, no rust at all.
My brother did ground up resto. of 83 and 84 LAND CRUISERS whiles living / working in Saudi Arabia , they are in canada now , my bro died , wife owns them now ?
Amazing cars. But when you go to this extreme with modifications and not do it properly you can ALOT of issues. I hate fixing other peoples mistakes. Good luck
You are really nice. I would of plastard their name. LOL But seems like a lot of work ahead. they'll make for some seriously cool content though!! I'm interesrested in seeing!

In Australia and nz they have bracing kits you can buy for sas swap kits and it stiffens the welded on mounts might be worth looking into it plus you don't pass certification over here unless a registered welder carries out the work
would be cool to see a video of how you sourced and imported the hilux
Moral of the story:
Purchasing a car NOT PERSONALLY inspected from overseas is the cue 🤣😁
The OTD price, oceanic transport, import taxation cost as much as a new LAND CRUISER ??
seriously, like i don't understand. just get a tacoma?
Oh that was a bit of a lemon but now you have the best truck you can get. Just needs some fixing up. And I'd lower it to 2" lift.
Good luck with it.
Cheers. 🍻
とてもサイコーの車!!
ホーシングにリーフスプリングの車はとても頑丈でいいですよね!
Good luck with getting it all fixed
Hey trust me. Get the tjm bar thier way better rated then arb or if you can get a muzz bar. Welcome to the n70 club. Please come back to aust
Welcome back first!!!
You got got! I’ve been in the car game a long time, never buy someone else’s project, because you are really buying their problems.
You should send your Landcruiser back to Australia and sell it. You'll make heaps back on it. All second hand 4X4's are making new car prices back here.
No way you toured past kimba! I live in wudinna, an hour west from there on the eyre highway
When u done its gonna look so badass
what kind of the transmission of this Hilux? 1kd is reliable engine , good luck
Sounds like the person in Thailand that owned it had a back yard mechanic do all his work. Looks like the body is the only thing that is good.
If you drive around in Australia for about 5 minutes you will probably see about 6 of these easily
Good luck .
Oh my this will be tough - Your big heart is trying to save the Thailand import like a stray dog!
In other parts of thw world, like here they come standard with DRL's
As an Aussie, you’re buying something from Thailand ofc it’s gonna be sketchy as like there is 0 regulations for mods there
Well if your chasing after market parts, here in Australia the after market scene is massive for these cars.
Just the front axle is from the LC80,the rear it's the stock oem Hilux.
Hopefully you got a good deal on that hilux, seems like a lot of work is needed to get her roadworthy.
they plug the heater hoses in Thailand and Singapore the big issue is the humidity with the electrics
You could purchased from Japan from Pacific Coast Auto a Canadian living in Japan.
You guys pulled a major Newbie No No buying a truck from Thailand.
really wished she did that
So you have nothing.
I’ve got my 08 hilux sas’d here in oz and if you need help with a new kit or anything to fix the sas, can get stuff sent over
Might borrow some ideas off your sas. Need to redo all the suspension components, reweld all the gibberish
@@OverlandLadyno worries at all happy to help anytime
That front axel is flipped upside-down lol
That’s crazy that someone would build something like that then sell it to an unsuspecting person. Real lowlife. Hope you get it all sorted out without it costing a fortune. Got my fingers crossed!!
Buy solid axle swapped stuff from Australia we have strict rules you won't have issues like that
You did not deserve the pain this vehicle is bringing you. If you really like it, hope your friends can take care of the issues without too much expense.
Love to see a rebuild on this
Omg. SCAMMED! Welds look scary! Live and learn I guess. We all get taken for a ride at least once. What a junker! Good luck!
Are you going to leave the leaf’s in the back or do coil over independent suspension for a much better ride.
My brother did ground up resto. of 83 and 84 LAND CRUISERS whiles living / working in Saudi Arabia , they are in canada now , my bro died , wife owns them now ?
you get through it. you always do.
Wondering WHY did you buy a car online, without being able to inspect it first? Was it so cheap?
Great car, but a lot of work to get is safe for your travelling trips around the world…… greetings from the Netherlands
Amazing cars. But when you go to this extreme with modifications and not do it properly you can ALOT of issues. I hate fixing other peoples mistakes. Good luck
For this toyota hilux , for the front axle , what model fit for front axle?
Every second car in Australia
Try and see if you can get some gu/gq patrol diffs they are a lot stronger and better than 80 series diffs
My question is, why do people decide to import from Australia, and not import from Mexico?
You are really nice. I would of plastard their name. LOL But seems like a lot of work ahead. they'll make for some seriously cool content though!! I'm interesrested in seeing!
why would you intentionally raise the center of gravity?
Is the savings that big of a difference to buy it from another country?
Greetings from Squamish Monique ,
of course I don't know how you are doing financially with this channel and otherwise.
But how about changing into the future and becoming our Canadian (maybe even with a promotional / advertising deal)
Overland Rivian Lady ?
Continue your exploring the great backcountry game, only electrified with a Rivian R1S .
Cheers
May want to check diff ratios front compared to rear since one is hilux and one 80s
Ive was trying to remember ur channel for awhile i think youtube unsubscribed me
