    Thanks for sharing!! Very cool of you. Learned a couple of useful tips like leaving that extra loop at each light for slack. I learned the hard way when I ran a straight line to each fixture at my last property and ended up short at the end. I didn’t feel like digging it back up again so I left it and it bothered me every night the lights went on lol. The lights at my new property came out so much better after watching your vid! Cheers for that

    Nice vid. Something I learned long time ago is that the wires can be identified as neutral been the thicker one.and the hot the slimmer one.i know some don't care which one to use. I prefer to be all consistent 😉.and also I came across once with some of those ground lights.these guys used like a small container under and filled them with grabble Wich I thought was cool so water won't set on the ground. Txs

    Hello Cal
    Thanks for the sharing wonderful tips.
    Please guide me.
    I would like to place low voltage 20 lights in my front yard concrete ( there’s no concrete yet).
    I see in the internet that I need to excavate 18 inches down, also an electrician told me the same thing.
    I think it’s a waste of 36 inches of wire x 20 lights= 720 feet of 12/2 wire material buried.
    Is it safe to run the 12/2 wire in 3 inch Black PVC pipe plumber instead of Grey Conduit ? ?
    Or can I insert the 1/2 inch grey Conduit into the 3 inch Black PVC pipe plumber??
    And
    Instead of bury the 12/2 wire 18 inches down, Can I bury the Black PVC plumber pipe just below the concrete which is
    3 1/2 inches ??

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  Рік тому +1

      For low voltage wiring there is no need for this depth. 6 to 8 inches down with no conduit is typically more than enough unless your local codes have specific bylaws which is very rare

    I am about to tackle a deck lighting project w some downlight fixtures under railing and well lights. All LED. What I dont understand is the transformer options. There are transformers with 12, 13, 15 volt capacity I will have 2 100 foot runs going in either direction w/ about 8 fixtures off of each How do I determine what gauge wire and which voltage to utilize All of your videos are really helpful. Best on the internet Thanks

    I have 4 palm trees in front of house, 2 palm trees are about 2 feet away from house and the other two about 10ft away.
    I saw these wifi lights that are on a long cable and have outlets along cable to plug in more lights. This guy mounted them along the house on the wall though not on ground and they look so cool. So IAM debating between just illuminating my front yard palm trees or should I illuminate the house walls instead and should i go with low voltage lights and a transformer or just wi fi plug in lights that I can control with google or alexa?

    What transformer are you using? I’m planning to install some led walkway lighting which will be controlled by an Insteon home automation system. Need a small transformer (~50 watts) that can just have the power supply switched on and off without any programmable functions that might need to be reset after a power loss.

    I think that it could show the wiring clearer. For example, the camera is too far away to see which wire is which. There is a hot and cold wire from the transformer, and a hot and cold wire going to the light fixture, but do you have to run a separate wire for every light fixture? If not then how do you chain them in series

    Hello, im looking to install these products. Unfortunately my exterior GFCI outlets are in terrible places. In the front, its right by the front door underneath the doorbell. In the back, right bay the back door. Id hate to put the transformer there. Have you seen it installed plugged in the house from the front window-sealed, then installing the photocell/transformer in the shrubs right in front?

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  5 років тому +2

      Hello Chi, we use a wiin wifi timer with the transformer. You can plug your transformer into the wion timer and the timer i to the GFCI outlet and then you can cover evryrhing and the timer can be set up to work with astronomic timing so it does not matter if the photocell is covered or not. Hope that helps

    • @ChikaCheeks
      @ChikaCheeks 5 років тому

      @@LightingDoctor Well i think the issue is that I dont have a convenient power source. Even if i use the wion it has to be plugged into the power source GFCI which is right by the doorbell.The landscaping wire still have to run from the transformer to the garden area. Have you seen homes where the GFCI was an issue for convenience? I asked someone else who thinks running the wire through the attic sounds better?

    Cal, thank you for all the excellent content! You rock :) I have some questions...
    How do you handle dimming? Do you ever use transformers that have integrated dimming capability (if there is such a thing)?
    Also do you ever use "smart" bulbs (i.e. bulbs with some kind of integrated wireless radio such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Z-Wave, etc.). In the case of smart bulbs, you'd have the added benefits of controlling brightness, white color temperature (or perhaps even full spectrum color)... and on a "per bulb" basis. Seems pretty powerful, because it enables some new use cases, and I'm wondering if pro's like you are starting to move in that direction. Just one use-case that comes to mind: program the downlight bulb in a tree to be green during summer to showcase the vegetation, and blue during winter to showcase the snow/ice. No more tree climbing to execute those changes--it would all be done in software (ideally automatically driven by a calendar). I'm sure you can think of more use-cases than me.
    Thanks again, cheers!

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  5 років тому +1

      Great questions. Yes there are a few dimmer options however still a littl on the pricey side. The Luxor from FX luminaire is one of the more favorite ones right now.
      There are also a few decent bluetooth colour changing options out there but there are still lots of bugs to get fixed. I would expect to see more and better options coming down the pipe very soon
      Thanls so much for watching and the feedback!!!

    Excellent video and very informative. Those Vista well lights are cool .. expensive but still cool. Doesn't the WiOn essentially kill the power like a power outage? So I assume the Transformer has something like an always on or Dusk to Dawn default...

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  6 років тому +1

      Thank you. The well lights definitely are more expensive because they have to survive underground but I find that over time people save because they don't have to replace above grade fixtures that get ruined by mowers etc. That is exactly what the Wion does, and the transformer can have a few settings. Sometimes has just an on /off switch so when you leave it on all the time you can then use the Wion to control it however you want. If you don't use the Wion the timer will typically have a photocell that will work with dawn & dusk. Thanks for the questions and comments!!!

      Lighting Doctor Ltd.
      From my prior comments you might have figured out I'm in the process of doing our landscape lights. So far and to do it right .. it's certainly not cheap and the big box stores are seriously lacking quality products.
      However, I do shop and found these $70 VOLT Salty Dog adjustable waterproof well lights www.voltlighting.com/landscape-lighting-12v-well-lights-led-salty-dog/p/VWL-705-BBZ and these beautiful Ballard's www.voltlighting.com/landscape-lighting-12v-led-bollard-path-area-lights/c/71 Most Ballard's either look like 1970's Mushrooms or 'tacky' Rods.
      Love your channel and best of luck! I wish you were in SW Florida...

      @LightingDoctor  6 років тому +1

      Lighting Doctor Ltd.
      I'm looking for the best quality within the confines of our budget and commensurate to our modest $700K home which is not multi-million. Our prior home was considerably more expensive and had commercial grade landscape lighting with at the time high quality fluorescent fixtures. Well they didn't last too long... My rationale is I can replace bad fixtures 3X for the price of so called good. This house had 10 GA wire, expensive SS Transformers and it's all dead .. except for one Transformer that's inside the garage.
      I'm spending $50 per fixture using a lot of using "Home Decorators Collection" (at least it's all sealed), 12 Gauge wire, 3M MGC, and some mixed fixtures. As you mentioned .. *it's all Chinese crap.*
      I'm a reasonably smart guy so what I've done I know is installed rather well and is tastefully done .. better than the Pros here.
      If these fixtures lasts 5-7 years I'd be crazy happy.
