I don’t ever weld aluminum, but if I do, your video gave me good insight, and good practices as a baseline to follow so thank you.
Best welding channel on YT. Thanks, Tim, this is great
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
Thanks for your videos - was very helpful. Helped me get through my project. I'm a novice welder making 12'x6.5'x2'x6.5' soccer goals out of schedule 40 - 3" and 3.5" 6061 aluminum pipe. I used a spool gun and 0.035 4043 wire. Two issues I found were (1) needing more practice welding around the circumference of the pipe, where the push angle changes quickly and (2) inconsistent wire feed speed when the diameter of the spool filler roll gets smaller. When the wire feed speed drops towards the end of the roll the wire more easily burns back into the tip.
Thanks a lot. I got so frustrated trying to mig weld aluminum I gave up. I’ll give it another try. Your online courses are great.
Hang in there, you'll get it!
When I use double pulse, the beads are nicer and it reduces the heat of the aluminum plate. Thank you for what you have provided. I enjoy and benefit from your work as an expert who explains the most important negative points that we encounter. Especially for beginners
Pulse can be pretty helpful when you have it, for sure!
@@TimWelds thanks
When you're production welding on aluminum a pulse welder will just get on your nerves if h
You're an experienced welder When You'remaking 25 foot welds without stopping you're going to want that constant current that a transformer provides the only thing l can say about pulse is you can weld downhill but the welds don't look as good in the flat is so much better A pulse welder just makes a c quality weldera b quality welder which isn't saying much. I had to use one when they scrapped our transformer machines and l frickin hated it
Always something new, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Very interesting video Tim, as always. Thank you.
Thank you, I appreciate it!
This is the most USEFUL aluminum mig welding video I’ve seen! Thank you!!!!!
Thanks a ton!
The one thing that no other video on this topic has addressed, is that the metal heats up, increasing penetration as the bead continues. That is what has caused my mind to not work, ending with me selling off one welder, buying another one thinking that was the issue when it wasn’t. I am on welder 3 now and I feel like I have what I need for this. I can’t thank you enough!
I typically use scrap to dial in the machine, human error will always be a variable in welds. running on scrap can ensure you have the right wire speed and heat input for the thickness you’re welding.
My favorite method of MIG welding aluminum is the whipping motion. It leaves MIG welds looking like stacked dimes. Mainly only do it because i love the way TIG welds look.
Thank you for the education you post for us. I just got accepted to a welding program so Im trying to absorb information before classes start
That's awesome! Congrats!
Good on ya, study hard!
Congratulations and much success to you!
Tim is right about stick out,if you go closer as in mild steel mig welding you will burn tips
Great video explaining the variables in aluminum MIG welding. tyvm
Thank you!

Just satisfying to watch the welding and see the aluminum melt
I've not tried aluminum welding yet but we got scrap metal and welderd I can practice on for fun haha
It never gets old for me. Sometimes I'll just go out and mess around on some scrap metal for the fun of it.
Reminds me of those old beat up spool guns. Pulse is far superior, but you did a decent job with that process. I would keep the angle to a 5-15 degree...
It was very informative
Thank you!
Awesome Thank you
Great video sir. I would love to see your technique on aluminium plate welding. We use 3mm plate with an single square joint, single side welding with a bend test afterwards. It's really hard to not: burn a hole in the plate, restart without excessive weld metal, have perfect penetration and not destroy the materials structure for the following bend test. No one that I can find has a video on this (or similar) welding, maybe you're the to fill that gap. Thank you as always for the great quality sir.
Thanks! Without some way of varying the amperage along the length, that would be very difficult because of how much aluminum heats up as you weld it.
That was great!
Thanks!
The old saying, practice, practice, practice, is especially important with aluminum since it’s so sensitive. Unfortunately, I only weld aluminum around every six months, so I’ve never developed a really good feel for it. I’d rather weld magnesium and I don’t like welding that too much.
Definitely true! Minor variations make a big difference with aluminum MIG.
Laser welding videos please, would really really appreciate
Is the black soot common when mig welding aluminum?
Yes, it's very common, particularly if you are using 5356 filler metal. It's not necessarily a problem, but it can usually be eliminated or greatly reduced with the right setup.
so was pulse used here? or was it just setup as if it was a non pulse mig?
No pulse, just “good old regular” manual program, one knob for wire speed, one for voltage, no pulse nothing synergic, just trying to imitate the Vulcan with a spool gun. Any “regular MiG welder” could get you those results
@azah57 Like Peter said, it was just run on DC. Normally, I would run pulse on 1/8" material since that machine does it very well. Honestly, the remote amperage controller on the HTP is equally beneficial, if not more to allow a hot setting to be used at the beginning and cool it off later in the weld. I was just trying to illustrate what can be done with a basic setup on stock settings and show how technique can make a big difference in the result.
Spray ark it what I do
In my experience, I never could get the feel of a spool-gun.
They're kind of bulky and awkward, but they can be helpful when you need a longer lead.
Frustased viewer like me 😂
