Nice video on an awesome achievement. The reason why Andrew didn’t go for the bullet bill glitch is explained in summoningsalt’s video of this game from a few years ago. You need to get the bullet to shoot at a specific time and it was thought to be random, but Saradoc found out that these patterns weren’t random and were influenced by what framerule you enter the level in. So he waited on the title screen for a bit to get a good pattern and did the run

wow
5:08 there are two main reasons. One was that the bullet shot is rng based, and using framerule routes to get consistent patterns was pretty new at the time (I started using it for warpless in mid to late 2013). In order to do the trick, you'd need to find a consistent setup for the bullet to shoot, and learn how to consistently execute the trick.
Also, and I'm not sure about Andrewg, but I was under the impression that the trick only saved 0.35 instead of 0.7 back then. All that on top of the fact that neither I nor Andrew had the savestate capabilities for practice that we do now, it made more sense to just keep pushing for the 4:57 method that we already knew was possible before messing with that more. Blubbler using emulator to figure out the bbg setup really helped with that advancement.
Well said.
oh heck its kosmic himself
Love your streams

Andrew G walked so they could run. That man deserves a separate video tbh as not only in Super Mario bros but also in Super Mario Bros 2, he optimized the speedruns by finding many starts and inspired other speedrunners as well. The same goes for Darbian as well, Absolute legends.
Andrew G is the main character of early speedrunning
And Kosmic... He's a legend too
Darbian got me into watching speedruns more. Like I would dabble before but darbains record really got me going.
And don't forget Badabun. He ate pizza and drank Coke so everyone else could run.
Yeah, videos on the backbone runners of various speedruns would be fantastic. Whether they still speedrun or not, their dedication should be honored. We wouldn't be where we are today if they didn't try.
My logic behind not using the bullet bull glitch was this:
In order to get the bullet to shoot consistently I would have to get there on the exact same frame each time. However, since you have to slow down the clear the piranha mid-stage this seemed completely luck-based. Even if I could find a framerule that worked, since I needed to slow down, I figured it wouldn't be consistent. It turned out that you only needed to be within a set number of frames for it to work (it was much more lenient than 1 exact frame)... I figured it worked like Bowser where he moves differently every single frame depending on when you arrive.

Super Mario Bros speedruns 10 years later: "Timing runs in space so that time flows faster away from Earth's gravity due to relativity"
20 years later: “moving to a tighter orbit around the sun ends up slowing down time enough to save 1 frame rule off the existing record.”
That wouldn't work. Whatever you use to measure the elapsed time would have it's own time sped up by exactly the same amount. And measuring a run performed in deep space with a clock on Earth would be cheating (although to even get a measurable difference you'd need a highly advanced atomic clock because Earths' gravity well is, relatively speaking, extremely weak).

Good thing nobody found out about some sort of cartridge tilt credits warp lol. That would ruin decades of hype instantly xP
It would just add a new category and add more life to this game. The speed run is already nearly perfect
Cartridge tilt is disallowed in speedruns though. If there were an legal, RTA-viable credits warp in SMB1, it would almost definitely have been found already. The code has been analyzed to smithereens, and there isn't that much of it. I could be surprised! But... no.
Or an arbitrary code warp, looking at you OoT
Cartridge tilting is hardware manipulation. I don't think there's a single speedrun community that allows it in any category.

The fact that the speedrun has only gone down 5 seconds in the last 10 years shows how incredibly optimized the game has become
@@youtubesuresuckscock definitely a mix of both id say
Short runs are the most difficult to get a WRs on, because there is absolutely no room for errors. In this run in particular one has to play TAS like, performing frame perfect tricks one after the other. I remember one time AndrewG was about to get a new WR, he stepped on the floor for like a frame entering the pipe on the water section of the last level. It looked completely fine to me, but it cost him the WR. While with a much longer game, it's just impossible to play TAS like through the whole run. So if you're really talented at a new game that takes hours to beat, a relatively new person who has natural talent at the particular game could pick it up and one day get WR relatively quickly.Actually, the best example might be a game like DOOM. Individual levels are incredibly optimized, but you're not going to see a full game run of DOOM that ties all the individual world records, and that gives the full game runs a lot more room for improvement.
I'd much rather say that its impressive how they saved 5 seconds on such a short run over the years.
@@inlovewithi Yeah, in it's base form the game is pretty easy if you remember when to jump, but it becomes stupidly hard when you add all the tricks/skips
You could say the same thing about a speedrun that's gone down by an hour in 10 years. If anything I think it shows how optimized the run was from the start, and how how short/difficult of a speedrun it is.

I like the Suicide Mission soundtrack in the background ;)
It's pretty crazy how fast a player can beat Super Mario. When there is talk of a 4.54, it is almost at the limit of what a human player can achieve. Quite the achievement, and a record to behold

Shiny hunters: I like those odds
“Give the game another 36 years” LOL

Mass Effect 2's "Suicide Mission" playing in the background. Love it. One of the greatest games soundtracks ever.
