@@mortenbund1219 yeah, it wouldn't stop a *sharp* knife. If the bali was a bit older and got a bit dull, I think a shoe might have helped.
Most of these guys don't use really sharp knives. Not that I blame them. I mean, they do have an edge and you can (and will) cut yourself learning tricks but they aren't REALLY sharp knives like my Emerson or some of my fixed blades. I have a few and have held many and have never seen one with a really sharp blade. Which makes sense. So, while you can cut yourself, the bite hitting you is actually not that bad. And, a lot of the better ones have like a half inch of dull edge before the edge starts. I mean, I could be wrong and some of these guys might sharpen the shit out of them or some of the $400 ones might be really sharp (the most I've spent was $50 on a balisong). I have some really nice fixed blades though. I even have a vintage Kukuri Gurkha.

It's simpler to just say that the knife doesn't have enough weight to cut a finger off. It just doesn't happen. I've seen a fingertip cut off before, but that's different.
It'll never be sharp and heavy enough to cut through bone though. Even if it were intentional, it would be very difficult to do.

@@Lucky-lp8do no that is a benchmade 6x series, the handles are designed that way to mimic the discontinued BM4x series. The blade is still very much a live one :) the other knife he is using is a green anodized BRS Premium Alpha Beast 3.0, which also has a live blade.
About the hand eye coordination I think it's just muscle memory for most of it
i mean even if you don't have a trainer you can just tape the blade and learn the trick until you're comfortable taking the tape off

You can practice with a trainer until you are good enough to not cut yourself, or practice a lot with occasional cuts. But when you are that good, I don't expect cuts to happen unless you are practicing a new aerial or really tricky opening.
Getting cut is part of the hobby. Even the best of the best still get sliced. And practicing with a trainer can be both beneficial and detrimental. No cuts, yes. But you will start to lose blade discipline. All of the sudden something you do all the time with your trainer will result in a slash because your trainer doesn't bite.
