  • The Rakuten Kobo Elipsa 2e is their second shot at a large-screen e-paper display that is primarily geared towards taking notes, freehand drawing, annotating PDF files and editing ebooks. There have been a few massive improvements to this model, that the first-generation Elipsa did not have. The front-lit display has been upgraded from a Comrtfortlight to Comfortlight Pro, providing better illumination for warm and cool colours. The Kobo Pen has been redesigned, it is 25% lighter, making it easier to hold for long writing sessions, a dedicated eraser at the top, is a great way to remove errant mistakes. There is a new processor architecture, providing a huge increase in single-core speed and increasing power efficiency.

    Kobo has hands down the best user experience IMO. Kindle has a better finish and build quality, but I don't see myself moving away from the freedom and the usability Kobo gives me.

      The remarkable 2 seems to be what I'm going to go for... the 'feels like paper' writing experience and the no distractions part of it is really the selling point.

      @@JeffVan604 I didn't had the chance to use the remarkable nor the new kindle scribe, but the writing experience wasn't the top priority for me. But I think this version only came to fix previous issues with the writing, doesn't it?

      @@IvanPauletti 2E's stylus is definitely a step up from the original. But if you compare it to its competitor's offerings, the 2E simply has the worst stylus lag out there. At least that's what I'm seeing from different reviewers.

      No idea how is that important. We waste so much plastic on one-use stuff like groceries and then we will use few dozen grams of "recycled" plastic on expensive device that should last for years. What is the point except it sounds good?

    Awesome review!! I can't wait for mine to arrive.. How's the writing compared to the old elipsa? Is it better? Elipsa 1 tends to get laggy when writing long notes, is the elipsa 2 much faster now? Thanks!

      This is something I would really like to see a more in depth look at. Feature wise the elipsa 2 looks perfect for me, but I would really like to know more about: what is the pen latency? How does it compare to the scribe and remarkable 2? Is the writing feel similar to an ipad with pencil? Is it useable for prolonged note taking?

    • @JeffVan604
      @JeffVan604 Рік тому

      What are your thoughts about the laggy stylus (even in the 2E) as compared to the competition?

    • @ptMaV
      @ptMaV Рік тому +1

      @@JeffVan604 hey, I can help with this since I ended up getting an elipsa 2e!
      In short, I lagginess is worse than the remarkable 2, but not a lot worse. I write happily and I never felt the latency to be an issue. Overall I'm very happy with the product. There are some gotchas, however:
      Occasionally I've experienced slowdown when writing. Usually on PDFs and epubs. Locking and unlocking the screen sorts this out.
      Occasionally, the stylus is detected before touching the screen. Pressing the refresh page solves the issue.
      For note taking, it fully fulfills my needs. I love using it for reading as well. The number one thing I would love to see is the ability to set the line thickness on the pdf reader. For academic reading it is too thick and that means I need to switch to a notebook if I want any serious note taking to happen.

    • @JeffVan604
      @JeffVan604 Рік тому

      @@ptMaV that's what i was worried about. If we need to open up a separate thing to take serious notes on an ebook anyway, that simply renders the ONE selling feature of the Elipsa (writing directly on the ebooks) completely pointless.

    • @ptMaV
      @ptMaV Рік тому +1

      @@JeffVan604 it really is up to what you're looking after. Writing on the ebook is more than fine. I'd argue it is as good as writing on an actual book, with the advantage of being able to change text settings to leave space on the margins and between lines for you to write on.
      If the ability to have sticky notes like the scribe is more appealing to you, unfortunately that seems to be the only option as of now.

    Thank very much for the review, but I don't see you commenting on the new processor. It has a mediatek core inside, I wanna know if it improves the performance and the autonomy.
    The autonomy issue is one of the greatest reasons why I didn't change my Kobo Forma for a Sage. If there's an Elipsa, obviously there would be a new Sage 2e. I wanna know if I'm correctly hyped for it.

    the Kobo Forma, which came out about 4 years ago, has better dpi (300). Why did Kobo choose to give this Elipsa 2e just 227 DPI?

      Perhaps less pixel give you a fast refresh rate of the screen and more battery. You don't need such detail in a electric ink device.

    Good effort in trying to be more environmentally friendly... but I think they kinda messed up with the choice of pen there. Getting users to use their pen that has an additional battery inside is not exactly environmental. It adds to the production of more batteries and more electronic waste. Using standard Wacom pen (that can also provide a similar or better writing experience) is definitely a “greener” choice. But then again, they may have a lot of pens leftover from previous model lying around unsold. Who am I to comment on this? 😅

    Thanks, the moment the presentator said, it feels like plastic writing in plastic. I will pass on this one. I'm looking for e ink that no distraction focus only in reading and writing with a good feels.
    I dont like android on e-ink as it will just distract me with so many apps available on Playstore and will drain the battery more.
    Now, I need to dig deeper with Remarkable 2 vs Kindle Scribe.

    I think the recycled plastic case is ok but they should really be using aluminium or something for that. Cut off the manufacturing of virgin plastics entirely and use the recycled plastic for things that have to be plastic. Especially because they can only be remade twice or so before they get really degraded and can only be used for insulation or things like that. And once we have replaced that virgin plastic with plant based alternatives or whatever we do, then presumably it would be far easier to keep recycling that kind of material. Maybe you could eventually compost it. But the key thing is to stop making new plastic. Use up the recycled plastic as much as we can and move on.
