I so agree with Mark on YT shorts. I never downloaded TikTok, never used it, but when I get through some shorts, I found quite a few new creators to watch.
The thing I'm curious about is the point about Honey replacing affiliate cookies with their own cookies so they get credited for the sale. So that part has been established. But I'm thinking, what about for consumers who didn't click on affiliate links? They just go to a website, go through the purchase, checkout but because they have Honey installed - they click on it to see if there are coupons etc. I'm assuming that even though there is no affiliate cookie to replace - Honey would just insert their one anyway. Meaning they're getting credited for every online purchase a person makes - affiliate link or not. Which would explain how they were able to market as aggressively as they were as well as pay for advertising as much as they did.
I did a class in college where we talked about cookies, and I think that's a pretty fair guess. If there's code to overwrite/change a cookie, but the cookie doesn't exist on the computer, then it will add a new cookie instead.
The affiliate payments are given likely cus those ppl have partnered with honey. The “payment” would be cus honey and the vendor gets to choose which coupons they reward. This way they convince ppl to pay a certain amount since they won’t find a better coupon to save them more money. And knowing they got a “good deal”, it would convince them they should buy.

They released a bunch of full videos on the Distractible UA-cam channel just a few days ago! I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen them yet, super fun and goofy topics that remind me of some of the old times^^
I don't think people fully realise how much money they have been making. They don't just take youtuber's commissions... they take commission on EVERY SINGLE PURCHASE made from anyone with the app installed. Even when no one referred you.
That's the thing. Mark actually bothers to look into his sponsors. He has an actual ethical code... Mark often feels he does not deserve the fame he has. He does. His moral compass is made of gold. He just doesnt waver from the truth in his mind. I subbed to him back in EARLY UA-cam. And guess what? Nothing will ever change. He is legit, my only hope of moral UA-cam media content. Never sell out Mark.
I feel that Mark is gonna be incredibly correct about Bsky. I prefer it to any other social media right now but it will almost certainly get worse. And if it gets super bad I don't think I will jump to another ship again. I'd rather just stay in my own corner where I have fun.

Just click subscriptions if you want to only see videos posted by people you follow. I don't know why more people don't do this. The home page is only good for finding something random to watch if the main channels you follow haven't posted anything you're interested in on the subs page. I even take it a step further, I purposely tell YT to NOT recommend channels I follow because I find it annoying that they are putting stuff in my face that I can already easily see on the subs page. @@Erzy- I've actually done this. But people on my subscriptions must be shadow banned, because a lot of the times I don't SEE what my subs uploaded unless I go to their page.
the second half of this has nothing to do with honey but i totally agree that quitting any social media or not following pointless drama baits is the best thing you can do.
The reason that this was able to go on for so long is because how low key all youtubers try to be about their sponsorships. The stuff about commission referrals is stuff they try not to make clear to their audience that it's happening. It's stuff they didn't really want the average user to know about, naturally they wanted to steer people away from noticing that stuff. I hope that this all leads to a situation where influencers and advertisers are a little more open about where they make THEIR money, so the public at large can see and call this stuff out sooner, long before it's turned into billions of dollars of stolen wealth.
Obviously it varies but I always hear youtubers talk about their affiliate links. It's just a way to get the audience to support the creator so everyone is okay with sending the commission to the youtuber.
Watching the stuff about BlueSky was hard. He was talking about how "Companies are gonna Company" which is true, except these platforms are decentralized. Meaning it's impossible for one entity being enshitified where it ruins the whole thing. Mastadon is the alternative, which isn't a company at all, it's just an open source project. The move shouldn't be to another privately owned and operated closed source system, but rather a decentralized open option where if one company decides to do something shitty, moving is easier than ever.
Man, for years people have been saying "affiliate links don't make big money," but the whole time, the whales that actually would give them money were just getting poached...
I have the same view toward Crypto Where does the money come from? That shit can’t just materialise digitally, because that’s not how money works, so there has to be *something* going on behind the scenes
@bobjoneswof But what exactly is that value, and how does it translate into money (which is the entire point)? Ya can't just create it from nothing, as money - even digitally - has a physical counterpart that helps determine the currency's worth
@Cheri_Blast money is valued because it can be used across a nation, and people want it, and companies want it. Crypto can be used not only in one nation, but all, which is why 1 bitcoin is worth more than 30,000. The value of bitcoin and other crypto currencies does not materialize out of nowhere, it comes from investments, and how much most people are willing to pay. TL;DR: crypto is money that is valued by most countries, which adds to its value.
Crypto is a currency. Its like asking why a dollar bill is worth a dollar. Bitcoin for example, is a reward for blockchain calculations (mining) people tade it for stuff, but its limited. Bitcoin has a cap of 21.000.000, and these are payed out as a reward as new bitcoin, there are currently 19mil in circulation, thats why the price goes up. And thats why bitcoin is so stable, and why meme coins dont work because the creator normally owns like 90% of it so they can dump it. Simply put, crypto is an agreed uppon currently, like a dollar, that is used for trading
I didn't trust Honey either. I remember downloading it once because conceptually it was a good idea but then at some point Shane Dawson started talking about it and somehow that tipped me off to something being wrong. At the time I wasn't sure how to articulate what, but I deleted it and haven't used it since.
Being such an avid YT viewer for ages, this was so nuts to hear. This thing has been around for YEARS! I watch videos pretty widely across UA-cam and I've seen sponsorships for it all over the damn place, in so many niches, big huge UA-camrs, small ones, in between, it's fucked! Good on Mark for smelling bullshit, I'm sure others did too, as a consumer of content I don't claim to have smelled it, because I fully didn't, but in hindsight it did sound a bit too good to be true. Like Mark said, "where did their money come from?" Either way I never downloaded it myself, but holy shit y'all.
The honey content aside, I appreciate the rest of the video. This should've been on the podcast or not make it members only. More people needs to see this.
mark couldn't have been more correct about reddit, most posts are either reposts, reposts bots (including comment stealing bots) or posts upvoted by bots. there would be times where a post on r/antimeme would have 2k upvotes and the top comment would have 20
Okay Mark, I need lotto numbers holy cow. He's right about BlueSky. It's a breath of fresh air from current social media, but only because it's new. There's been some sus and not cool stuff the owners are doing that's making some of the people I follow getting ready to jump bluesky, after they jumped off the twitter ship, like couple months ago.
Love it that instead of the usual, "oh it's nothing guys, I mean, if you think about it..." response, Mark went full, "I KNEW IT! FUCKING CALLED IT!" route.
that's literally what i said when I first saw a honey sponsorship, i believe it's in a Michael Reeves video, my reaction was "how do they get the money for the coupons?" "do they increase the product posting price and give fake coupons and they keep the difference for themselves?" because the coupons they show is incredibly big, it's unbelievable
I mean, tumblr has its merits for sure, fun fandoms and inclusive spaces, but it’s also one of the best sites to go when you want to be told to go kill yourself over something entirely benign
whats worse to me is that there's a new product from the same people thats an ad blocker thing that's set up similarly to honey and it sounds just as scummy to me.
12:48 Bleusky is a public benefit non profit. Also their network protocol is opensource. That means if Blue Sky goes the OpenAI route of becoming for profit and shit, then you can just make red sky or green sky or whatever and still have access to the protocol and network. Similar to how there are a million email providers. If yahoo mail is crap you can switch to gmail
@toxiclunch So are a bunch of projects. Linux for example is free and it is the back bone of most servers on the planet. Android is free. Chromium Browser is free. What you shouldn't trust is free money. (Like honey)

the Social media takes are Spot on, as someone who's never gotten into it, i think they're all going to end up going the same route as all the other places, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and even places like Twitch, Kick, and Rumble to a lesser extent are all the same platforms (or at least the same structures) with a different mask. I.E. the people on Bsky saying "it's SOOOO much better here than on Twitter, or Twitter saying "At least we don't have the same echo-chamber nonsense as the other places" when it's all the same shit 99% of the time. "Enshitification" was spot on.

How about you just let Markiplier handle it and see if HE wants to take down this video? Use your brain.
The problem with Shorts compared to TikTok is the algorithm isn't nearly as good. I still get a lot of garbage on Shorts, but TikTok knows what I want.
It is kind of baffling that it took this long for anyone but Mark to question it. What they were doing was hidden enough to go unnoticed by the average user, but it seems like the kind of thing you'd expect some savvier people to notice and call them out on way sooner.
I think mark should not take this down because it is a good PSA about who you get sponsors from and who you do deals with as well as a PSA for what is going on with this stuff.
How they can afford to have ads on MrBeast almost broke my brain as I can't figure out how a free extension that finds coupons that doesn't even work can have the marketing funds that they have. Now it all makes sense.. It was sketchy back then, i'm more surprised it took this long for someone to expose them.

also, "small clip" is debatable
i'm not too fussed either way, mind, I just don't think it's all too nuts for someone to see this as wrong.
Mass reporting does nothing, it will be most likely not take action or slow interview.
this is the best advertisement for mark’s membership tbh 😂
I so agree with Mark on YT shorts. I never downloaded TikTok, never used it, but when I get through some shorts, I found quite a few new creators to watch.
Ultra Instinct Markiplier
I think they literally do that lol
This is so cozy. I forgot how cozy just listening to Mark talk about stuff is. Makes me wanna become a member to see more, but I don't have the money to spare. I'll have to start watching Distractible again, I forgot how much I loved that stuff.
A majority of it is on UA-cam now :)
i enjoyed it, but had to stop as there were WAAAAAAAAAAAY too many ads, like i would be fine with an Ad or two, but it's like damn Cable how many ads there are, AND I HAVE PREMIUM!!!!
They released a bunch of full videos on the Distractible UA-cam channel just a few days ago! I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen them yet, super fun and goofy topics that remind me of some of the old times^^
@@SomeOrdinaryJanitor Funny how free youtube mods provide better adblock and more quality of life features then UA-cam premium nowadays. Revanced FTW
I don't think people fully realise how much money they have been making. They don't just take youtuber's commissions... they take commission on EVERY SINGLE PURCHASE made from anyone with the app installed. Even when no one referred you.
Man, truly, mark said it was big brain time
That's the thing.
Never sell out Mark.
some do sellout but its not as much as you think :/
He was right all along, crazy! Huge W Mark
Mark is no oracle, he just has common sense. Just listen to the social media bit.
And good instincts
Someone once said "aged like mead".
Aged like honey lol
I feel that Mark is gonna be incredibly correct about Bsky. I prefer it to any other social media right now but it will almost certainly get worse. And if it gets super bad I don't think I will jump to another ship again. I'd rather just stay in my own corner where I have fun.
More and more people are using Bsky, so of course if going to turn out worse on regards of people being stupid and stuff.
i was invited to it about a year and a half ago and i saw seeing what were essentially neo-n's i can't say the word but i was baffled that they were on there and deleted my account since there were just So many of them. i saw nothing except toxicity on there worse then other places.
As someone who has a bsky account, my feed is all about politics and yeah it’s not fun 😅
@@vanerey30 I've managed to avoid too much politics. I follow a bit of David Pakman and get some Palestine stuff there but that's all. Hopefully I can keep it that way because I want more horror, movie and writing stuff there.
My problem with it rn is the amount of bot followers i get on a daily basis and it's annoying
He's one of the only popular Gs not affected by the "minor curse"
I swear the world is gonna collapse if Markiplier gets caught up in something controversial
VINDICATED!
14:00 Feels like it happens on YT's algorithm too. I'll keep refreshing my feed and get new channels I've never heard of, but any old channels I follow with new content (or even old content) will not pop up. It gets annoying, it gets tiring having to tediously search for things that I want passively just to get things they THINK I want.
yeah. no offense to the little guy, but i'm tired of opening youtube and seeing shit like "LETS PLAY: Goldeneye 007" (102 views) type junk. thats not what i go in for so idk why i'm getting it recommended to me now
@@OurHereafter I wouldn’t even care about getting the videos with 20 or less views if it was at minimum stuff I was interested in!! “How to tie a kingfishers top knot to a wench pulley system in high altitudes for beginners” (8 views) NONE of those words are ever something I’ve searched for on UA-cam, or hell, any other part of the internet.
I want the home page to always have new channels I haven't watched before. It is the way to do it trust me
@@Erzy- I've actually done this. But people on my subscriptions must be shadow banned, because a lot of the times I don't SEE what my subs uploaded unless I go to their page.
If the company was bought for 4 billion dollars it means that they've made more than that so far, for sure.
2019 revenue was 200M. I highly doubt they made over 2B in revenue for the lifetime of the company.
Evaluations aren’t revenue. Profitable companies get bought for far more than they’ve actually made, because you’re buying all future profits.
The best thing that came from the events is that it reminded me markaplier is still on UA-cam because ngl UA-cam just stopped recommending him to me
the second half of this has nothing to do with honey but i totally agree that quitting any social media or not following pointless drama baits is the best thing you can do.
@@ChucksSEADnDEADI'm pretty sure they legally have to be disclosed, that's why people mention it so much nowadays.
From my experience, ttrpg UA-cam channels tend to be more open about what affiliate links do and the nature of their sponsorships
Mark just knows
I have the same view toward Crypto
Where does the money come from? That shit can’t just materialise digitally, because that’s not how money works, so there has to be *something* going on behind the scenes
well that's technically just numbers not certainly money. maybe money deletion :))
Crypto has value for the same reason money has value, supply and demand.
Simply put, crypto is an agreed uppon currently, like a dollar, that is used for trading
another W from markiplier
I didn't trust Honey either. I remember downloading it once because conceptually it was a good idea but then at some point Shane Dawson started talking about it and somehow that tipped me off to something being wrong. At the time I wasn't sure how to articulate what, but I deleted it and haven't used it since.
Mark has a pretty neutral accent despite him growing up in Cincinnati and then he says Coupon like Que-Pawn instead of Coo-Pawn
bless you for this.
paypal buying it for so much should have already been a huuuuge red flag
He's not only the king of FNAF, he's the king of foresight
Being such an avid YT viewer for ages, this was so nuts to hear. This thing has been around for YEARS! I watch videos pretty widely across UA-cam and I've seen sponsorships for it all over the damn place, in so many niches, big huge UA-camrs, small ones, in between, it's fucked! Good on Mark for smelling bullshit, I'm sure others did too, as a consumer of content I don't claim to have smelled it, because I fully didn't, but in hindsight it did sound a bit too good to be true. Like Mark said, "where did their money come from?"
Either way I never downloaded it myself, but holy shit y'all.
Thanks for the clip Mark ❤
mark literally did his own meme, it's big brain time
The honey content aside, I appreciate the rest of the video.
Funny that while speaking about how bad social medias are he didn't mention Tumblr. This is actually because Tumblr is fucking awesome
so long as you block photomatt
I mean, tumblr has its merits for sure, fun fandoms and inclusive spaces, but it’s also one of the best sites to go when you want to be told to go kill yourself over something entirely benign
Absolutely baffling that search and tags is still broken. I have a blog I'd like to check old posts on but everything is broken.
whats worse to me is that there's a new product from the same people thats an ad blocker thing that's set up similarly to honey and it sounds just as scummy to me.

I believe him on the aita shit because some of those stories are so specific and indentifiable that being anonymous is basically worthless
the Social media takes are Spot on, as someone who's never gotten into it, i think they're all going to end up going the same route as all the other places, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and even places like Twitch, Kick, and Rumble to a lesser extent are all the same platforms (or at least the same structures) with a different mask. I.E. the people on Bsky saying "it's SOOOO much better here than on Twitter, or Twitter saying "At least we don't have the same echo-chamber nonsense as the other places" when it's all the same shit 99% of the time.

Thanks for this i didnt know about this
I think mark should not take this down because it is a good PSA about who you get sponsors from and who you do deals with as well as a PSA for what is going on with this stuff.
How they can afford to have ads on MrBeast almost broke my brain as I can't figure out how a free extension that finds coupons that doesn't even work can have the marketing funds that they have.
