- Recording the restoration of Crewe Town centre at the present time its a ghost town with all the shops closing ready to be knocked down we will be recording the restoration as it happens
Grew up in Crewe ,went to Ruskin , left in 88 to join the Army .When I retired 25 years later I was saddened and shocked just how much of a shit hole my home town had turned into .The only thing I could do was pack the wife and kids up and emigrate to Canada.
Seeing this video makes me sad but happy that I had the means to get out !!
Yep it's my Story too. We moved to Canada and don't regret it.

Sad times. I grew up in Crewe and attended Ruskin in the early 80's the shops were so well supported back in the 80/90's but then came the big box retail. I do hope that the town gets back on top again. I have happy memories of going to see Star Wars at the Odeon on Delemere Street before it was Mcdonalds.
Even the McDonald's is shut now 😂

More than a year on from this video now and here is a quick question for all those posts saying its a missrepresentation and the only reason the shops are closed is that we are getting a shiny new shopping center.
Q: A year on from this video, do we have.
A) A shiny new shopping centre
B) A busy building site pushing forward the bold and forward looking plans for Crewe's future.
C) Exactly the same as in this video, apart from the last few remaining shops are gone and it looks a bit more deralict.
Almost 2 years from this video now.
When will the update be posted showing our lovely new shopping centre!?!
Oh,,sorry, I forgot. STILL A DERILICT RUIN WITH SOD ALL PROGRESS!

UNBELIEVABLE
Hello folks and welcome to your 3 year update since this video.
We had a flurry of activity about 6 months ago when they tore down the perfectly usable shops.
They then surrounded the site with plywood, and,,,,,nothing.
6 months of sod all.
We now have a lovely pile of brick ends and smashed concrete to attract people to our wonderful town center.
I'll be back in another 12 months for the 4 year update in the " couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery" saga.
By which time the pile of brick ends will probably have historically protected status.
So sad, I remember Crewe in the 70s and 80s full of life then. Came back to visit 2018. Market Hall empty of stalls, even John the cafe man has gone, he must have been there about 40 years too.
My Dad still lives Crewe, he said he is too old to move now. Shame that it's like this people.

It was a great place to live when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s it had Dance Halls Cinemas Youth Clubs etc: it seemed to be full of life .40 Years of unbroken Regan/Thatcher Neoliberalism has killed the town.
I lived there until I was six then moved to Australia

The problem is they are knocking down half the town and renovating the market so it will take a long time before we have a town and market

@Grizza Leng its a railway town without an industry, forgotten with promise after promise never coming to fruition. The council said recently they are unsure if the town center redevelopment will go head and if it does weather it will be successful. Crewe is one of those towns that was left behind and forgotten about unfortunately.
This is an embarrassment to the town. They were planning to do it up years ago.

In the past year maybe a few months when I’ve been to Asda (going to Asda is pretty rare for me) the abandoned ‘tanning centre’ alarm is horrid
@@anonymouspage1034 i know it is, god know what it must be like living near it but who ever owns the building clearly doesn't care to switch it off it is honestly surprising that its still able to ring out after nearly 3 years of solid ringing.

@@anonymouspage1034 It been reported many times, occasionally it gets attended by the police but they’re not bothered about solutions; apparently all the sunbeds and hairdressing equipment is still inside, surprising it hasn’t been looted and burned out!
Left Crewe in 1992, don't get back that often, sad to see the town centre like this.
Most of crewe is going to get rebuilt so thats why most of it is closed

If you buy everything online you don't need shops.
There's nothing wrong with any of them buildings structurally, they just need the frontages bringing up to date, maybe new windows and doors etc and the interiors refitting. Let's be honest we don't go knocking down our homes when the windows need doing or it needs a new kitchen etc. There's years left in them buildings, they were built to last not like this modern sh*t that has a short lifespan. The bus station to be honest is beyond saving due to its concrete construction and really does need to be replaced. It would be cheaper to renovate the other buildings and get many more years from them. The council seem to favour replacing them with the typical steel frame / brick tile / glass / sheet steel crap that lasts around 30 years or until they decide a change is needed. they are not interested in the historic side of it anymore it's all money. I recon they will demolish and clear the site and it will sit a wasteland for years before anything is done.

Must say this is the woss town centre Iv seen , Chester bad but this is.........BUT, you have to ask WHY ! ? Chester its sky high rental charges, must say I remember the square 50s all Bus's M&S Woolies etc. happy days.

Crewe isn't a ghost town. It has a big railway station next to a wonderful football club i support and love, plus I was born there.
