- In Quanzhou, the most popular style practiced is Wuzu Quan, or Five Ancestors. This style takes Taizu Quan as its basis, and adds elements of four other styles. In this two part episode, we learn about Wuzu Quan from Master Zhang Xiao Feng.
In this series I team up with Jesse Enkamp aka the Karate Nerd to travel to Fujian province, Southwest China. We are here to explore the arts of Southern Shaolin, particularly the arts of White Crane, Five Ancestors and Luohan. You can see Jesse is happy to have found kobudo old like weapons in China. Btw, great job Will, out of the 3 major "regions" of kungfu, Fujian is the least known and understood. 90% of kungfu in the west comes from Guangdong or the north (specially Shandong).
There’s a lot still to be explored in Fujian, particularly if we go more remote
Okinawan karate mostly derived from Fujian. Not Guandong. Guandong MA mostly came from the Southern Shaolin Temple in FUJIAN.
Nobody said Okinawan Karate came from Guangdong. Perhaps you misheard or misread something

One of the best interviews I’ve ever seen in my life, great history, and powerful technique from this Master. I’ve never seen anyone so skilled with the tonfa aside from Master Fumio Demura of Japan. Master Zhang Xiao Feng needs to write a book (or several) for the benefit of preserving the martial arts. I will search for this Master and see what other information we can obtain.
My Sugong studied Five Ancestors as a child before learning Shaolin from our Cho Si, Seh Koh San.
Hopefully, I'll get to study it in China one day

If you want to explore Five Ancestors Fist, I invite you to come over to Kunming in Yunnan Province, China and meet My 74-year-old master: Mr. Su En-dai, who is originally also from Quan Zhou. You would see many interesting things that could surprise you about "Wu Zu Quan".
I can tell there are some similarities between karate and martial arts of southern China
Similar with Okinawan weapon techniques. ❤️

Holding a bo or kon at 3rds is for beginners. This guy is on the money. If this style is part of what Matsumura learnt, It explains why he was fast and complained that his student Itosu was slow. Itosu’s style is powerful. That upward kicking motion or takedown from the ground is also seen in karate kata. Very interesting.

In Japan it was used for law enforcement but in china it was used to protect ur village or urself
Most southern weapons seem to be more like farming tools, compared to in the north where its all military stuff

Aren’t those just for show? It is not combat quality. It is what they use here for students so no one gets hurt.

Monkey Steal Peach. I suggest nect time you can go search about Hakka kungfu, the bai mei, long xing(dragon form), zhu jia jiao, dong jiang zhou family mantis.(hong kong)
And the Wu mei in Malaysia., as well as Malaysia penang zhu jia and others kungfu.
Now adays youngster especially chinese young one doesn't even wanna learn or respect the traditional art. Ita very sad for me

That was such a surprise to see the Karate truncheon in this kung fu school as I thought it was a Japanese innovation that came from fighting with a chair leg! On Jese's site he reckons Karate used to mean 'Chinese Hand,' and the rulers changed it to claim it's origin as Japanese. This only lends some substance to his claims! X

I would not say that Taizu is the basis of Wuzuquan. Perhaps Master Zhang said that. It's not what I was taught but then I am from a different lineage and it's all oral history in the end.
The late Master Chee Kim Thong explained to us that Wuzuquan was formed because the Southern Temple (not sure which one, since it does not exist now) felt that too many skills were being lost as monks left the temple. So they called a conference bring people back and consolidate their skills into a single system. Not everything is compatible but they took what was compatible and formed Wuzuquan (Ngorchorkune).
Thus they combined (very, very briefly):
- Luohan for posture and power generation from the core.
- Taizu for precision in movement and hardness that appears soft.
- White Crane for hand techniques.
- Monkey for footwork.
- Datmo for breathing and internal development (nothing esoteric here - I'm talking maximising oxygen load in the blood, core strength, tendon development, connective tissue, etc).
It's not that what each system contributed was lacking in the others but that it had developed it to a particularly high level.
Master Chee also talked of a character he referred to as "The Lady in the Green Dress" who added fluidity and further softness to Wuzuquan after it was formed. However, I did not see this in Wuzuquan as it is practised today in Quanzhou, so perhaps this happened only in one branch of Wuzuquan, of which there seem to be several.
All that hopping you see Master Zhang doing is basic Wuzuquan footwork and comes from Monkey.
Interesting, thanks for sharing! You should check out my podcast interview with Russ Smith where I asked him a lot of questions about this topic. I’m more focused on northern styles, so I interviewed him to get some clarification on what I experienced in Fujian

I just clocked a quick look at Russ Smith doing a form. He seems to be from the school in the Philippines. They do Wuzuquan with a very different emphasis to the Chee Kim Thong school.
I believe they also have a very different version of the origins of the system, not that this has any bearing on a practitioner's ability.
He has done Chee Kim Thong lineage too

Please give me the link of the video about luohan kung fu. Because I haven't seen luohan kung fu yet. Even I don't know luohan kung fu is the part of which shaolin kung fu. I mean is luohan kung fu northern shakib kung fu or southern shaolin kung fu . Please reply me when you can.

There is both northern and southern Luohan, both are totally unrelated styles.
