  • It's almost spring and that means seed starting is underway. Normally I only start a few seeds indoors. This year the unpredictable temperatures and the inability to control any part of my outdoor seed starting efforts pushed me to look at a new combination of seed sowing. Indoors! Being as this was a last minute, late decision I did some quick research and set out to find a budget friendly option for growing seedlings indoors. I wanted to share this process and show you the outcome! I am thrilled with how well this turned out and so easy to put together.
How are you starting your seeds?
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate you :-)

I have a similar setup and I absolutely love it. The LED shop lights work perfectly for seed starting as well as growing my houseplants. Like you mentioned, the lights need to be within a few inches of the seedlings to prevent them from becoming leggy. With my houseplants, the lights are about 1-2 feet above the plants.
For anyone considering ordering a heat mat to use on the shelves, remember to measure the shelf dimensions INSIDE the corner poles. A 48 inch heat mat will NOT fit on a 48” shelf unit…ask me how I know🙄. I ended up using two of the 20” mats and that works fine.🌱🌱🌱

Hi Kayla, wow that is GREAT advice on the heat mat. Do you feel having a heat mat is worth the expense? I was going to buy one but they are so pricey I just didn't.

This is awesome! This is my first year seed starting, and I have just one light on a makeshift stand. I hope to do something like you have next year!

Hi Debra, It has worked AMAZINGLY well. I am so excited to share with you the results. I will film some hopefully this weekend. Maybe you could get one light at a time so next year you will have them ready. Well worth it.

Those lights are the best! Got 8 of them last year at Walmart from Gary's suggesting on the Rusted Garden. Your gonna love them.

@@thesoutherndaisyllc There doing great!! And you can put them lights really close and wont have to worry about burning your seedlings. I don't have a heat mat and germinate all my seeds in my furnace room . I put them ontop of my hot water holding tank. My peppers are taking the longest and I just learned that soaking them like some other seeds will make them germinate faster. Can't wait to see your follow up video.

They are saying they are out of stock. I got the 4' shop lights from Walmart and they were $19/each. I would google where you are and see what you can find. They are super inexpensive and easy to pick up and put up.

A quick suggestion: since you do not use the closet, why not put the whole unit in the closet?

Hi, thank you for your suggestion. I guess I should've said I don't go in and out of it ever. I do use it for storage and have some hanging items in there so wouldn't be able to do that. Great idea though. :-) Thank you for watching!!!
