the vid for the Rainbow machine on Knobs pulled me out of a 10 year guitar hiatus. i was totally what i erroneously called a "feedback rock" guitarist in my day, highly inspired by sonic youth and the more improvisational nirvana songs. with that vid it started me down a rabbit hole of discovering pedals have come a long way in 10 years. knobs got me hooked on EQD, but i still have trouble getting to do anything usable other than its chorus stuff from the rainbow machine but by golly ill keep trying. reverse delay with Avalanche Run with the rainbows magic has gotten me some cool stuff though. Anyways, now that im back at it trying to make new sounds this pedal zone channel has been non stop awesome for me. good job stefan!
Aside from the pedal itself, I liked that he seems really happy and excited about showing the pedal and also his words are quite eloquent to describe the sounds it produces. It's a nice touch, thanks
Thank you so much, man! ❤️🙏 And I 100% agree. The RM is so known for ONE sound, that people just don’t look further for the plethora of unique awesomeness that it actually holds 😊
I am a huge fan of the rainbow machine, and I'm glad you were able to highlight the wonders and beauties of what is often considered a joke pedal. While its more extreme settings can result in more "sound effects" than music, it does make for a fantastic chorus effect. It's unique because the chorus is unmodulated; it's just a result of pitch differences and phase cancelation, which makes it more similar to a "unison" effect that you'd see on a software synthesizer. Thanks to your video, this aspect of the rainbow machine will get more exposure, and people can appreciate it for the awesome sound-sculpting tool that it is.
I think that it is silly that anyone would consider this a "joke" pedal. But, people react to things differently. The Korg Miku seems more "jokey" to me. But, even that could serve a purpose if used in a certain way.
Yea a stunning chorus sound and i love it.what is amazing to me is that almost 35 years after the fact we’re still trying to sound like Andy Summers which isn’t bad in itself but it’s still a big throwback. . . still love it tough
Another brilliant video. I’m one of those people who has a rainbow machine and just tends to use it for one-off noises here and there. This is a great lesson on the subtlety this pedal is capable of. Great work as always Stefan.
Thank you! Honored that the video actually provided new information and insight to someone who already owns the Rainbow Machine. Have fun making sea creature sounds ☺❤
I use my rainbow machine on almost exactly the same setting! The only difference in my setup is that I have the tracking around 9 o' clock to add depth, and I max out the magic. I use the rainbow machine as a chorus, and then hit the magic switch for bursts of feedback that I run into a dd6, dd3, and pitch shifter for stuttered chorus sounds that I pitch shift. As always, great video man.
Michael Cueto I do the same with a Uni-Vibe, a Kilobyte, and the Meteore, into a DD-3. Stomping the havoc for the madness. The DD-3 gets those trippy sounds, out really clear. *For a little pitch shifting sound I use the Malekko 616 after either Kilobyte or Meteore. It was Stefan's vids that influenced me to put delays and Tremolo after Reverb or other delays.
I love how enthusiastic you are when you speak about your pedals. Really shows how passionate you are about creating music. This is the only demo of this pedal I've watched that actually makes me want to purchase it. I'm glad you demoed it with reverb and delay since that's how I planned on using it and it seems to create some "stellar" sounds.
Same thoughts my friend. The pedal was used the entirety on the song "The Pecan Tree" and if it hadn't been used some of the atmosphere would've just not had been there.
Thank you for taking the time to understand this pedal and do a sensible demonstration! There are so many useless dems of this pedal that seem to only emphasize ‘it’s weird!’. This is the very best demonstration of the magic feature I’ve seen. Your channel is awesome!
That was a great demo Stefan. Thank you. I must confess that I never was quite convinced by the pedal from all the demos I saw, so correcting some of those things and explaining clearly helped me a lot. Thanks !
Thank you! Means a lot, man! The thing about most EQD pedals is that they can be so incredibly deep. So if you don’t put in the time to get to know the properly, you will miss out on greatness 😊
@@thepedalzoneI have searched for many examples for how to use it musically and the ones I like most among all of them are the 2 sequences you use in this video. I would try to make a tablature to play them. Are they part of a known song or are your own riffs ?
Daaaaamn, at 5:26, just imagine having a tremolo (with a touch of mid and bass) before the effect. Or still, a univibe before/after the effect. Didn't know someone could make me want this pedal more. Cheers Stefan for making more wicked content
Think it could be cool with a tremolo after, so the Rainbow Machine can regenerate into it and hence keeping the tremolo pulse going longer. Would sound rad! ❤ Really happy you enjoyed it, dude!
Thank you, my friend! Mighty kind of you ❤️🙏 Some of these pedals truly are instruments in their own right. Hence they require patience and practice to master, just like any other instrument. It’s easy to get scared off by the Rainbow Machine. But it does truly house some wonderful sounds when you know how to unlock them 😊
Super fun. I was using it with the setting you have towards the end , with delay setting on Dark star pedal, with echo plex and nux oceanic hall reverb... creepy space sounds, lol. Fun, fun, fun.
A lot of times, it reminded me of my Digitech PDS 2020. Happy to see someone not just crank the magic and call it a demo. Also wasn't a fan of the era when any "crazy" effect would automatically be paired with the Rainbow Machine. Thank you for showcasing this in a new light.
Thanks, man! I'm happy you enjoyed the video. It's easy to just max the knobs on the Rainbow Machine and call it a fun day out, but the real rainbows are hidden in the subtleties and slight breaking of prismatic light within this pedal. Played one of these for a few minutes at a music store. I felt instantly overwhelmed by how chaotic it is. You proved it is possible to use it musically. Good job 👍 It’s still not something I’d go for, but I love that EQD is so inventive with their pedals. Whatever sound your chasing it’s out there these days!
You must be a Queen fan...not because you use a Mercury pedal, but because I could definately hear the great but crazy interlude from 'Get Down, Make Love', which May played decades before the Rainbowmachine was invented. Great video again!! You've become one of my favourite pedal reviewers. Keep up the good work!
I'm actually not a Queen fan at all. I've got nothing against them, but I've never really been spellbound by their music. So any similarities there are a complete coincidence 😊 That being said, I can easily acknowledge their immense musical abilities, and their innovative approach to songwriting, recording and sound design. They definitely set the bar very high. Happy you enjoy the videos on my channel. Truly means a lot to me 🙏🌈
Thanks, man! Happy you liked the demonstration. And yeah, the Rainbow Machine is weirdly mesmerising. Like, it's out there, but that's also the intriguing and inspiring part about it. Such a fun pedal. And it simply houses one of the best chorus sounds I've ever heard.
You do look like you feel at home with other sea creatures 😂😘 Walrus' are the cutest! Happy you found inspiration in the video. Makes it all worth it, man ❤
I love my Rainbow Machine. It’s truly one of the most beautifully weird pedals ever. Some of those chorus tones you were getting reminded my of Slint’s Tweez LP. Ever heard it Stefan?

Great video. If you crank magic to 3 o’ clock, tone almost completely CCW, and tracking to 10 you get a weird tail to the notes that sound awesome with fuzz. Pitch should be as close to unity as you can get and adjust primary/secondary to taste
ooo love that chorus tone, thanks for the tip. I'm going through their pedals and building them one by one, this one has a digital signal processing chip so it's a little pricier.

Can't help but notice the sounds you're getting are really similar to the EQD sea machine (one of my fave pedals!). I think the reason the sea machine is the better choice for most people is that in addition to the chorus and delay/regen (dimension knob on the sea machine), you can change the rate to get more vibey or rotary sounds. Great video though, always nice to see more musical settings on these more "creative" pedals
There's slight crossovers for sure, but it's not the same. I own both and love both. People craving something a bit more "normal" should definitely go for the Sea Machine. It's an incredible pedal. People who like pixie dust and surprises should go for the Rainbow Machine. The RM is almost an instrument in its own right ☺ Happy you enjoyed the vid. Means a lot to me ❤
Thank you for this. I had given up my Rainbow Machine for useless except to make my drum machine sound weird. After this video I started messing around with some of its hidden capabilities and found a chorus setting I like. Now it is the front of my signal chain for an ambient lead tone, and the magic switch gives it a subtle flanger-like quality.
I'm really stoked to hear that this video introduced you to some new ways to use your Rainbow Machine. It's such a wild pedal, and it demands a lot of you and your creativity as a musician, but I also think it's one of the most rewarding pedals out there, once you learn how to master it 😊
Great demo. I picked one up awhile ago and couldn't justify the price vs how limiting this pedal felt. There's literally only 2 sweet spots I found on this pedal that I liked and you def hit both of them in this video. I just wish it was a little more versatile for the price.
Happy you enjoyed the video, man. Means a lot to me. There's a lot of sweet spots in this pedal. But a lot of those spots might not align with you and your style. I also have a video where I use it with an expression pedal to create synth-wheel-like bends (you can find that in the Tonal Teamwork tutorial playlist). In my band I use it as a faux-stereo-widener (it just makes everything sound bigger), and as a crescendo effect (by engaging magic) to make certain parts or breaks stand out. Nick Reinhart uses it to great effect for wild rhythmical patterns, by looping short passages of magic bursts. I dig it, because it's truly a pedal that forces you to think outside the box. It's not just one thing. It can be a lot of things depending on context and how your musical mind works ☺
Just stop it. I got the Meris Mercury 7 because of your demo, and then again the EQD Pyramids. Now you have turned what was previously an utterly unusable pedal into something rather intriguing ;-) I also have the Avalanche Run so I am going to HAVE to release an ambient album LOL...
Try to use a bottle neck on this setting. I think the dolphin will appear in front of you. I use a bottle neck and some delays to simulate seagulls too. Cheers
That’s great, man! I’m just glad that some of the sounds resonated with you. That’s what Tonal Teamwork is all about 😊 Mercury7 is incredible. Hands down the best sounding reverb I’ve ever played 🤘
If anyone wants to hear what the Rainbow Machine sounds like in a real band with actual songs than check out an album called 'Oshin' by the band DIIV, absolutely amazing album!
Thank you! Awesome to hear you already have the Rainbow Machine and have dabbled with similar sounds. If you're on Instagram, then please tag me in clips of you using the Rainbow Machine. Would love to hear the sounds you make with it ☺
Interestingly, I have always thought that the Avalanche Run has a bit of an overlap with the Rainbow Machine when you control the delay time with the expression pedal. That is probably fairly obvious but if you rock the expression pedal up to the quickest time then just pulse it back a little and back again to the fastest (quick stabs) you get a VERY similar sound to what you have here. I'd played with the obvious warping Rainbow type sounds on the AvRun, but then discovered that little technique about 6 months back and it absolutely became my fave sound. EQD rock! As do your demos and left field pedal combos and settings Stefan :-)
Nice demo - been thinking of getting this for my synths. This helped reinforce a few things for me: Sounds with a short release time will work best I think, perhaps with a bit of percussive tone. Passing this into a Dreadbox Hypnosis for the delay and spring reverb will be really great (it will feel quite a bit warmer than your Mercury7). I have to wonder what the Hypnosis' flanger section will do to the signal... I'm also curiously specifically what a spring reverb before the Rainbow Machine will sound like (probably just a mess...); I'll have to dry that out with my eoWave Quadrantid Swarm. Anyway, this def gave me ideas...
First demo that's actually made me want this pedal
I'm honoured. Thank you! Really happy you found inspiration in the video. Makes it all worth it ❤
This was also a great demo in my opinion

If you have the pitch at 12 and the Magic off it’s an incredibly cool modulated slapback. I have it on constantly.
Audience? Where this pedal's going, we don't need audiences.

I've found that if you turn the tracking down pretty low, the rainbow machine makes for a pretty solid slapback delay, if that's your thing.

Ok .. this is the first video that really want me to buy this one... and I got other 7 EQD pedals ... dam 😅
You can never have too many EQD pedals. They are just too good :) Rainbow Machine will definitely take you to uncharted sonic territories
I wish I had that kind of money :P then again if I did I wouldn't have it very long thanks to Stefan here haha
@@hiqwertyhi LOL 🤣😝
sounds just like a deluxe memory man
Awesome now I want it haha
Epic 🌈🙌
Lovely
Thank you so much, dude! 😊
crazy difference with the delay and reverb
It just smooths things out and ties it all together ❤
Nice!
Thanks, dude! ❤
Try to use a bottle neck on this setting.
I think the dolphin will appear in front of you.
I use a bottle neck and some delays to simulate seagulls too.
Cheers
Ha! Heck yeah! Definitely need to give that a go ❤️🤘
This is probably the first pedal-demo that makes me feel anxious.
'No Alexa; I want another word for noxious'. Bring on the Sushi ...
So many firsts :)
that mercury7 got me more interested than the Rainbow Machine actually
That’s great, man! I’m just glad that some of the sounds resonated with you. That’s what Tonal Teamwork is all about 😊 Mercury7 is incredible. Hands down the best sounding reverb I’ve ever played 🤘
If anyone wants to hear what the Rainbow Machine sounds like in a real band with actual songs than check out an album called 'Oshin' by the band DIIV, absolutely amazing album!
Such a great album!
Beautiful sounds you got there! They're pretty close to what I use my Rainbow Machine for, I'll surely have to try those settigs!
Thank you! Awesome to hear you already have the Rainbow Machine and have dabbled with similar sounds. If you're on Instagram, then please tag me in clips of you using the Rainbow Machine. Would love to hear the sounds you make with it ☺
@@thepedalzone I will and already have in my EQD Night Wire picture. ;) SquareWaveSymphonies
How do you like your Aston microphone?
Love it! Can’t recommend it enough 👍
@@thepedalzone thanks that's great to hear!
Nice demo - been thinking of getting this for my synths. This helped reinforce a few things for me:
Sounds with a short release time will work best I think, perhaps with a bit of percussive tone.
Great demo. Still not my thing, but now I at least understand the appeal!
Happy to hear my video was able to give you a different perspective on this little box of madness 🌈
Wellp, I know what I want for Christmas
Everybody deserves rainbows for Christmas 🌈❤👍
Josh Martin from Little tybee has the best demo ever for this pedal.
