Eddie Miller I saw a clip from the Carol Burnett Show where he performed a similar act. Look up the keyword “Charwoman at the Circus”. Ut was a very gentle and touching performance. 😊
I saw him do this act live a number of times when I was a kid. He had complete command of his audience. The film does not capture the magic of his live performance. From the first moment that light moved and he reacted, you were just riveted like the whole world except for that stage just vanished. His body language was amazing, and exacted such empathy. Of course I was a little kid, but he elicited such empathy. Quite a genius - a broom and a light, that's all.
As a child I despised loud, obnoxious clowns. Emmet Kelly on the other hand was an artist of the heart - quiet, gentle, creative. I loved seeing him in person. Dressed up like him for Halloween, not usual for girls, and had an Emmet Kelly doll. Always brings a smile to my face remembering him.
This isn't just a clown routine, it's art...this was my first time seeing this and I was entranced the whole time...I'm glad I was able to see this in my lifetime, if only I could have seen it live, that would've been unbelievable...truly amazing...
This man has inspired me as a hobo clown and a regular clown as well. With the Ministry as a missionary clown it's beautiful work when you get the amazing Master such as Emmett Kelly to guide the way he maybe gone but the legend still lives on. It is a dying act but for the ones who still are with it we are so very greatful to you and all the other Masters. ❤️ 🤡 ❤️
Hi from Finland. I saw Emmett Kelly first time today and after watching some of his videos I’m going to understand how great clown he really was. This gag was one of the best I’ve ever seen. Too bad we didn’t see him here. Well, we had our own TV-clowns who off course were really good when we were kids in the 60’s. One was Onni Klovni with large waist pants (there was a Hula hoop inside) and the other one was a magician called Fakiiri Kronblom.
I have loved Emmett Kelly since I was five I'm 58 now I still love Emmett Kelly and I love all clowns! It's sad to me that so many people don't understand clowns and are afraid of clowns because of stupid people
The son stole his fathers creation Weary Willie and was in competition with him. Problem? They had the same bad agent/lawyer. Most of the figurines are Jr. not Kelly Sr. Shame! Shame! Reply
When I was a kid back then, my grandfather took all the grandkids to the circus at Madison Square Garden every year. I remember Emmet Kelly very clearly performing this and many other gags.
iHelloway, he must've done other gags, I'm assuming; at any rate, this was his most famous. Probably didn't hit upon it overnight, doing other clown-stuff before becoming famous. I'm reading Emmett Kelly's autobio "Clown" to find out.
I've heard that this is one of the only surviving clips of Emmett doing this routine. Possibly the only one.

@@irenecheng5884 I think it was his son, Emmett Kelly, Jr., who appeared on CB Show. In costume, he was the spitting-image of his famous father.

Me too! How fortunate we are!

I saw it for the first time with Henry Fonda playing his part! 💓
I'm 85 and I saw him when I was a child at the circus in Madison Square Garden.
. Me too in my little home town where the circus performed every summer. My favorite part of circus was Emmet Kelly's poignant portrayals.
Emmett was truly an artist who brought joy to the hearts of children of all ages.

I, too, start crying when I get too much attention
THIS IS TRULY A MAGNIFICENT ACT. EMMIT KELLY HAD GREAT STYLE.
I remember seeing him at Madison Square Garden when I was a child (I'm 85)
I have loved Emmett Kelly since I was five I'm 58 now I still love Emmett Kelly and I love all clowns! It's sad to me that so many people don't understand clowns and are afraid of clowns because of stupid people
I also was about 5 when I saw him at the circus in Madison Square Garden (I'm 85 now)
I truly disliked loud obnoxious clowns as a child but Emmet won my heart with his creative pantomimes. He was my favorite part of circus.
I've been a hospital and therapy clown since 2006. I'm a hobo clown because of Emmett Kelly. I'm female BTW. He was the best.
There is a beautiful clip of Emmett and Carol Burnett very beautiful
Also with Lucy on I Love Lucy (in the 1950s)
This is amazing 🎪🤡❤
That was beautiful
You were the best, Mr. Kelly!
He makes a brief cameo in DeMille's circus epic "The Greatest Show on Earth", the only DeMille movie that won an Oscar for Best Picture.
I worked briefly in the cemetery where he is buried.13yrs ago. In my town Lafayette..I use to clean around his grave and rest cemetery
Resting place Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lafayette, Indiana
My mom had posters of him al laround my room when i was a kid, I use to look at the "eat at right" one often.
❤ I had an Emmet Kelly doll. Wish it had not disappeared. Thoughts of Emmet always brings a smile to my face.
La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil has a clown like Emmett Kelly who also does the spotlight skit.
I LOVE Clowns 🤡🎪❤

This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen, art
He was much loved.
My Mother loved his work.
Emmett Kelly was wonderful. I had relatives in Houston Mo where they had a festival in his honor.
I remember watching his old clips on tv when I was a kid in Sydney. Loved him then and I still love him now. Great act.
JUST WOW THAT IS CLOWNMANSHIP

Any idea the name of the music?
Do you remember family of mine?
Song name 0:03
I remember first seeing:"The Clown & The Kids"at The Wakefield Movie theater in the Bronx,NYC over 50 years ago.
Another movie for me to look up.
Habrá una manera de redigitalizar este hermoso video..????
What’s the first song called?
The very end of "corporatives conspirative orchestra." I'm not sure if it's the original but the only version I could find is by Lalito De La Montaña.
Hola
so ... this is his only gag ? ... cant find more kind of gags ...

A metaphor for the later years of life....
Emmett Kelly also appeared as himself and as"The Pied Piper"in this kids movie.
Thanks. I've never heard of movie. Hope I can find it on the web. He is truly a childhood favorite, always fondly remembered.
Turbio
I always thought Red Skelton did this. Did he ever?
You can find clown show by Red Skelton with Jerry Lewis in UA-cam.
He and also Carol Burnett copied this act.
Out of focus carbon arc spotlight. Only a few operators left.
