Late finding this but much enjoyed. County Tipperary is where my wonderful wife’s family lived for many generations & with the help of Google Earth we recently found the cottage that was the family home. Sadly it was in a very bad state of disrepair, windows and doors either missing or boarded up & where walls had once been the space behind was filled with junk. A very sad picture of a home where laughter & no doubt tears had filled its heart. A home where a father was left to raise seven children after his wife had passed away & the children had been raised by other family members some in England and some who made the long voyage to the United States to be raised by family they had never known. It’s easy to forget the hardships that some of what we think of as quaint little cottages have been witness to in days gone by. If walls could only speak. Anyways, thanks for sharing this idyllic piece of Ireland & I hope you had an excellent time there & took away many wonderful memories.
The "contraption to cook your food over the fireplace" is called a crane - which was a pivoting bar hung which cast iron pots and bastibles were attached to.
It's my 63rd birthday today and I have just come across this video. My greatgrand parents were from here and there name was Murphy. My grandmother name was Josephine Murphy and she was married too my grand father Mr Jack Ryan of the commons, thurles county Tipperery.
We've stayed in 2 cottages in Ireland, one of them 4 times in West Clare, we love going back, its like our 2nd home, thanks for sharing your video, have you been back since?
Thank you for uploading this video, it made me feel very home-sick. The old cottage and the whitewashed walls leave the atmosphere of those who have gone before us. My memories food back at the sight of them. Sadly the one I was brought up is now gone, but not forgotten.
We Europeans are clean, not too well organized, not polite anymore and we certainly do not believe in the Lord anymore!!!!! So please don't come here anymore! We do not need you Americans to poison our countries!
Hello. I'm preparing a floorplan of the cottage from the movie "The Quiet Man" and I have a doubt. In the original cottages, where was placed the toilets? In a small shed outside the cottage? I want to know what exactly used the people of the past century as toilet... Do you have an answer? Can somebody help me? Thanks.
Iñaki Aliste Lizarralde usually a small shed outside do your business in a bucket or po and empty it out back where the dung heap was.bury it of course in the dung heap. Dung heap usually out of sight around back or behind shed.a letter I heard of yrs ago that an old man sent a letter to family in America in it read the people have gone mad here there even putting rooms in houses where you do your business right next to the kitchen .he couldn't understand how anyone would do this in the house disgusting lol.oh modern times versus old times.
In Canada we called it the outhouse and many outhouse doors had a quarter moon 🌙 cutout and old catalogues substituted for toilet paper/tissue. In the UK I understand outhouses are definitely not used for toilet purposes! We would call those outhouses or outbuildings sheds where tools were kept and other outdoor implements such as lawn mowers. My ex-boyfriend spent a few months in jail and wondered why there were footprints on the toilet seat in the shared bathroom! It seems people from certain Southeast Asian countries do not sit on the toilet but rather squat on the ground over the holes dug for the purpose.
@@sharong8511 Thank you very much. Finally, I decided to integrate a small toilet into the structure of the cottage, although with an exterior entrance. You can see the result on my Instagram: instagram.com/ializar/ Or you can find my illustrations on the net by my name "Iñaki Aliste Lizarralde"
Good and white washed.Authentic. I hate it when these cottages are striped down to the bare stone,as they would never have been originally. Well done with this one
it's a running joke between my travel partner and i. after his father passed, he found out his family were descendants from nobility in Galway (his father never mentioned it. the mayor of Galway came to Milwaukee's Irish Fest and had this investiture-thingy ceremony there, making Michael, the oldest in the family, a Baron, blah, blah, blah, in name only. nothing came with it but the title. so the trip was to bury his father's ashes on the family property which is a castle in Galway - Oranmore Castle. www.irishexaminer.com/property/arid-10054951.html

The original toilet would have been a hole in the ground outside.
