I did not understand this was 2 songs, we Will Rock You and we are the champions I had a depressive friend who when we are the world came out changed the words to we are the world you guys are nothing I had the same visceral feeling about we are The champions, no time for losers etc etc and it reminded me of a professional musician I once met, an American, who was just too much into himself. Now I can enjoy we Will Rock You.
For me it isn’t nostalgia, because I don’t think of it as a single person. There is a boy … there is a young man … there is an old man … all have been put down, alone - but now they have awakened, and they are coming together - the stomping feet are marching - they have entered the streets from all corners, find themselves a mass, a movement that can’t be controlled, at last powerful in their unity: WE WILL ROCK YOU!
I can never really hear 'We Will Rock You' as a stand alone song though. It has to be followed by 'We Are the Champions'. It's like 'Evie' Parts One Two and Three by Stevie Wright (written by Vanda and Young), or the whole of 'Layla' by Derek and the Dominoes.
Yes! I feel the same way about Heartbreaker to Living Loving Maid from Led Zeppelin II. It would drive me nuts on the radio, and so satisfying when they played them back to back!
The central ambiguity of the song is who precisely is rocking who? Is Buddy being rocked by the forces arrayed against him? Or is it Buddy and everyone like him who are rocking those forces? Is it the band rocking the crowd? Or the crowd rocking the band? Or is it all of them? Is it the constant striving for triumph over adversity that locks us all in perpetual struggle? Maybe it's that shared struggle that is our greatest triumph.
Thank you for sharing it , just wonderful you bright put the identity of each crucial element. I keep learning in this path, getting your course as I have stalled songs about to come out 👏 All the Best andKeep inspired 😊

Excellent exposition!!!
I really like the full band live version.
Merci beaucoup.
They followed a similar approach to crowd engagement a few years later with Radio Gaga.

Thanks! That was useful. I learned some new ideas to use in songwriting.
Maybe we will rock You line could be interpreted as how hard life will rock you or as if no matter how hard life gets we will keep goin
Would you ever do a video on how to write songs like counting crows. Or how Adam Duritz writes hes songs.
Sure, those are both great suggestions! Thanks
Simplicity and Chopin??? That must be the joke of the month :D I bet that quote is attributed to him by mistake :D
Some good points, but there's no drums!!!
