Thanks, this is really clever!
I don't think he was really jealous of Cole. He was angry and sad because Anne had treated him so mean on that trip to Charlottetown. This is what convinced him that Anne didn't have feelings for him. It drove him towards Winifred when they met.
Making Gilbert feel bad like that was something Anne could have avoided, if she had reminded herself that he was only there on Marilla's orders.
