HAND PATH In Golf Swing Explained! (Best Plane From Takeaway To Slot)

  • Hand path explained! Henry and I look at how your hand path is dictated by numerous factors, including your anatomy. How we takeaway the golf club and get it back in the slot can be different for each person. Some take it inside and get it back on plane, some swing more up and down a single plane, and others take it outside and shallow it out more in the downswing. All have worked for the greats throughout history and we reference the swings of Sam Snead, Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson to compare and contrast. We also take a look at our swings side-by-side, even hitting side-by-side to take a look at our different unique matchups where Henry has more of a single plane golf swing, where mine tracks more as a two plane. We hope you enjoy!

Cool topic guys! Have either of you ever looked into Terry Rowled and Mike Adams theories on matchups depending on wingspan-height and elbow to knuckle length compared to elbow to shoulder cap length... I'm 6'1 but I have a 6'7 wingspan and my elbow to my knuckle is a few inches longer than my elbow to my shoulder so inevitably I will have a more upright backswing and if I try and get it over my shoulder, I probably can't and would be doing myself a disservice. I spend the better part of 10 years trying to get my left arm across my shoulder regardless of how I hit it and now as you guys have seen my left arm is real high and I hit it better than I ever did and shallow it easier.... love all these theories that have come out over the past 5 years and great video Boys!!!!

Yes they have some good ideas concerning anatomy and it’s effects on the swings appearance. They have a few other ideas that I might not subscribe to. I tend to lean towards teaching a player good athletic motions letting many of the items they outline just naturally fall into place.

Justin Thomas vs Dustin Johnson? The less you rotate and stall the more arms get activated outward and possibly flip hands to recover?

Sam Snead setup with a closed stance . He took the club back relative to his stance . His downswing was over his backswing plane , but still from the inside

Came back to tell you thank you! I spent the past couple days incorporating your hand path and I FINALLY can get my long arms back in front of me.
I was one of those players that would get his right arm stuck against my rib cage no matter how hard I turned.
When I move like you, I now have the space I’ve been looking for in the downswing; an actual gap between my elbow & right hip with a much straighter start point as opposed to the push draw I’ve had to play. I’m signing up… gotta see more.

Can you please clear up something, you said don't stress out about the hand path as long as the club path is moving properly, I always thought the club trails the hands and the hand path dictates the club path? Thank you.

A comparison of your swings shows both of you pretty much the same at shaft parallel. The difference is this: (a) In Milo's swing a impact, his right foot is still firmly on the ground and there is a decided gap maintained between the left arm and the right arm. The left arm is in line with the shaft at impact; and (b) in Henry's swing at impact, he has already pushed off the right foot, so his right heel is clearly off the ground. That move has caused the left arm to go left at impact, and the gap between the arms has disappeared. At this point the right arm is more in line with the shaft and powering the club through impact. Either way works. It seems to depend on whether or not you push off the right foot before impact.
