I beg y'all not come down to Lubbock!!! Y'all are lucky getting pics of nerders and it ain't gonna be lucky for us that live here. I loved severe weather because I was born in Cebu Philippines where typhoons we're common. When I moved to NY was fascinated with nerders thanks to storm stories. But never in my wildest dreams that I would end up living in Lubbock, Tornado Alley, Texas. I blame the US Army, TDCJ, & myself for falling for a man in uniform.😏

This is good training right here this video.. it shows first and foremost that you NEVER, EVER, assume the entire tornado is visible with that little drill bit at the beginning. It WAS ALREADY a half mile wide wedge at that point. But touching down in the dry line, even a dry RFD feeding it made the visible condensation funnel not tell the whole potentially deadly story. It was when it hit the dust field that it's true form became quickly known. So please SPOTTERS, never trust a tornado!!! Always assume the wind field is at least as wide as the base (wall cloud), thats how El Reno 2013 almost gobbled up everybody , the little carosel of funnels is a good photo op. Unless the actual tornado is already on top of you... Good catch dude.

This is the biggest and scariest tornado I’ve seen recorded. I live in tornado alley and two tornadoes hit our city within a few years of each other. That was scary!!!

It's crazy to know those inflow cloud walls can be forming just 20 feet off the ground.

Is there an "event horizon" or clear perimeter of a tornado like this that cannot be crossed? How close can one get to it without being thrown into the wind?

99% of the time these pro tornado chasers know what they're doing and don't get hurt. It's usually amateurs that end up making a mistake that costs them.

I've seen this phenomenon myself, where I live at one edge of Tornado Alley. Not a big wedge, it started over me as mammocumulus with evil looking, dark, greenish clouds lit from behind, and thin ghostly white whisps flying by at a lower altitude, all that stuff. And it's true: it sounded like a freight train once it descended into a tornado. And just like this video, I pulled over to the side of the freeway, got out, told a few drivers what they were watching, all very excited... every other driver had gotten out following me like lemmings to the sea, wondering what I was looking at. LOL! No ditches to get into, was near the foothills of mountains. I didn't even drive under the nearest overpass. I didn't know **** about safety back then. As the cold front passed over me I had to reach through the driver's window and grab onto my steering wheel. Sudden change in temp... All very exciting, powerful. Saw it take off the roof of a church north of us. Debris flying. I wasn't careful and didn't know much yet about extreme weather. But for people who live in Tornado Alley, it isn't so exciting, it's deadly.
One thing I've always wondered about. For those who live where this happens often, why don't people build underground homes, with the front wall of the house open for natural light, at ground level, grass for s roof which would also regulate temperature and collect rainwater for free... or what about round-walled houses which allow wind to pass by more effectively? Those ideas are already applied to new super skyscrapers. The only reason I can think of, is tradition, or that the home they buy is already built long ago. But they keep building or replacing destroyed homes with the same square box model. Why? I'm not an architect, but surely those wouldn't cost more than traditional boxes, and tornado insurance would go down... skylight tubes would provide even more light and cross-ventilation... it wouldn't be claustrophobic. I'm uneducated in this field, so what am I missing?

Was there at Morton with silver lining tours on a ten day vacation. My first mothership supercell and wedge tornado. Very impressive storm. So much dusty inflow due to the bad drought so the storm was like a huge vacuum cleaner sucking in all the dust.
