Wait ... so one of the most popular comic book artists ever is making free videos giving advice for upstart/beginner illustrators? Man, this is a perfect example of the benefits of the internet!
I would have killed to have stuff like this when I was in highschool and was basically not learning things I needed to because my highschool art teacher was an abstract painter and shit at drawing, it really killed my progress over the course of highschool and turned me off to going to art school, and I got a computer science degree instead. It's nuts how much I improved even in my 30's, getting back into drawing simply due to youtube videos. Seriously, my HS art teacher was like anti illustration. We sculpted, painted all sorts of shit but no sketching/illustration.
I mean it kinda is. He draws with a very formulaic art style bc he’s a comic book artist who needs to match deadlines. All you need to do is find your formula
there just are these artists where every sketchy line they draw just looks so perfect and so in place !! I hope I'll learn that natural way of drawing soon
nope , not gonna be soon , you gotta master methodical and slow way before you can speed it up , there will be less error and look better when you speed up .
Andrew Loomis the great illustrator (you should check out his books), has talked about this. Its called rhythm lines. You can't specifically 'teach' it, it develops with practice. He mentions moving your pencil across the paper without moving your wrist, to develop that sense of rhythm.
Just think and familiarize things like simple objects. With regards to human body, just familiarize it and develop geometry in your mind as your guide. Once you have it, it's easy to play those line and shapes and put some detail. I am no expert, just an experience. :)
A trick I did early on to help me out was to literally draw a faint, miniature little light bulb wherever I wanted to depict my light source coming from. It's great for consistency and you don't have to imagine what the cast shadows might be as much. At the end, of course, you can go back and erase it. Again, it's a great little tip for beginners to help maintain consistency with their light sources.
his sketches look better than your finished drawings because he knows his proportions anatomy and structure, and that's one of the most important aspects of a good drawing. No finished drawing will look good without decent structure, and being able to do that easily just comes from lots of practice and study. And great videos like this are very helpful in that regard!
This is some great incidental asmr! Jim Lee draws my favorite version of Batman. I love the way his cowl fits. It’s like fabric that is tight on Batman’s head, and you can see the shape of his ears through it. Love love love it.

These videos of Jim have reinspired me to draw. I just copied 3 of his videos and am decent at drawing any angle now. Goddamn, thanks for the tips, Jim. I'd buy you a beer if you weren't so damn famous
I'm in shock that you have a channel and show people how to draw. You were one of my favorite artist in the 90's. I look forward to catching up and learning from you.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I read years ago in wizard magazine he was gonna go to school to be a doctor and decided to get into comics and taught himself how to draw. That boy good.
I like how he gets ideas in the middle of the sketch where he just decides to go: "oh hey, this could be batman" (adds bat ears) and "this looks like daredevil, yeah it's daredevil" (adds horns)

Is he using that fancy strong illustration paper made from ground stone?

I know this is over a year old but how in the hell does this have ANY dislikes? Do people not realize how lucky we are to live in a time where this info is provided for free to everyone?
I saved this video to watch later, I'll have to remember how the shading works, but I don't want to blackened all the face out I'll do it with pencil shading the direction of where the light is setting maybe a circle of where the sunlight maybe as example of where the shading should be.

It's from his Twitch stream.
Also a perfect example of Jim Lee being a genuinely good guy.
