I have owned a couple of parrots - perfectly trained - but never thought to use them in schools. You are an inspiration Barbara. If I ever get baby parrots again I'll do what you do for sure! People need to appreciate nature and know how intelligent parrots really are. As smart as dogs in my eyes - maybe more.
Beni is a Blue Throated Macaw. They are smaller than B&G's, have blue instead of black beards and facial feathers and quite endangered in the wild. Check out the Bird Endowment to see how you can help support their conservation project.
@Zarthga blue throats are bred in captivity. Many of the parrot species we see as pets are threatened or endangered in the wild but bred in captivity for the pet industry. They do not impact wild populations adversely. In fact Beni the one in this clip is an animal ambassador. He teaches people about blue throated macaw conservation at the Kaytee Learning Center : )
After seeing this video i wish i had a parrot like yours. I have a green cheek conure and i want to train him just like you did. He lets me pet him, take him out of his cage, and lets us feed him. When we try to get him on our hand, you have to lift and put him on u and after that, he starts biting lightly then gets hard until i give him spray millet. then he does it again. Can you please give me a few tips on how to stop it? I was touched and wished my bird did wat ur bird did.
@bfmvshinigami These parrots are both less than a year old in this video. Parrots are about the same size as adults at weaning. They dont fully mature until about 2-3 years old for macaws, less time for smaller species.
Try offering millet spray. If he wont accept it from your hand just place it in his cage and step back far enough away so that he will eat it in your presence. Over time you will be able to reduce the distance and eventually have him eat from your hand. Then you can begin training specific behaviors with positive reinforcement.
@fruitdemon think in terms of "training" and not so much "breaking" : ) The goal is to give the bird the opportunity to volunatarily participate and get something fun in return such as desired treats or attention. Check out my info on my website on the basics of training with positive reinforcement. you can get free articles on how to train at the FAQ page. That will help get you started.
Hi Aztec Girl. It is never too late : ) Parrots are always learning, just like us. Be sure to focus on positive reinforcement for your training strategy. Lots of resources for you on my website www.goodbirdinc.com
hi Barbara Heidenreich i love your little girl she is amazing how she allowed u trusted bond with you and her have u ever trained sun conure and golden conure one is a sun.conure and second bird is a golden conure he is 2 years old sunny boy is about 7 years old and i just wondering if u could try trained some smaller bird like my 2 boy is their any way that would help me to train Regal and Sunnyboy
had my parrot now 5 yrs and having trouble breakin him into going on his back or using a towel over him & won't let me touch his wing or front/backsides to pet him only his head. before we bought him ppl in the store would terrorize him so i think that traumatized him a lot, whats best ways to break a parrot of this and to train to get farther of touching etc?
I just got a 3 month old ringneck - he was handfed but is terrified of people - won't let anyone near him, flies away and screeches, doesn't play with toys, totally quiet.... I am worried about him though he is at least eating well. How do I get him to trust me? I don't like toweling him but that is the only way to handle him. I love this little guy and wish he wasn't terrified of me :(
@happyinlove97 That is great that your birds respond to millet. You have a training tool to help you get started. I would recommend my first DVD Parrot Behavior and Training and/or the Live Workshop DVD called The Basics of Training. Either of those will help you get started buidling a trust relationship with your bird.
When I buy a parrot, he needs to get use to the new environment, so should i keep him in a calm room for 20-30 minutes then in his cage then back out so he knows the room is also safe or should I straight away go on to stick training? I've been asking you a lot of questions lately, sorry about that Barbra I just want to get ready and want to be a good parrot owner like you =D
Do you have a DVD for bringing new baby home and teaching them what you taught these birds? I would like to just get off to a great start with my new macaw and stop bad habits in myself and bird before they start. Thanks
+startnight1 Yes many are in my first two DVDs Parrot Behavior and Training and Training for the Veterinary Exam. I also have webinar recordings that with lessons on these behaviors. You can find both at www.goodbirdinc.com/goodbirdinc.com/parrot-store.html and here www.goodbirdinc.com/goodbirdinc.com/parrot-store-digital.html
@obaid16195 Creating a talking parrot is really about training and early learning experiences. Good Bird Inc will have more resources for you (and others) on this in the near future.

hi barbara! iwould like to ask what food reiforcement you can recommend for my blue and gold macaw when i start my training? what do you give Beni for his reward?
First read this blog. It will help you with creating motivation for treats goodbirdinc.blogspot.com/2009/04/parrot-training-diet.html. I just use sunflower seeds and nut pieces
@obaid16195 The good news if that positive reinforcement training applies to all species from lovebirds to macaws : ) You can use the same techniques to train your ringneck.
@boran267 i acquired them right after weaning. then worked with them for about 3 months. approximately 15-20 minutes per day of training specifics behaviors. an hour is too long ; ) The rest of the time was just interacting for fun and enrichment. Please see my blog and website for more info : ) GoodBirdInc
I think it is great that you want to learn. In general you want your parrot to be comfortable before you start training. There is no specific time period that works for all parrots, You will have to see how your bird responds. I would not start with stick training, I would start with offering treats and see how the bird responds. Then try target training. This will do more for building your relationship. Visit my FAQ page on my website for advice for a new parrot owner.
Hi Barbara, I have 2 eclectus (male and female) almost 5 months old. The male pretty much hates my hands ! the female will not lung unless shes in the cage. but male will lunge all the time.. any specific blog posts or videos that can help me now.. Its hard getting them to and from the cage without him getting mad at me :(.. Obviously there so young that food motivation inst working much and i dont think i can with hold food right now.. I don't want to mess up training by doing the wrong things (forcing step up etc).. I dont know if this is an indication of a non social aggressive parrot going forward... i have never encountered this behavior in a baby parrot.
Sorry! I am just seeing this now. For some reason it was hidden. Anyway this page has resources to help www.goodbirdinc.com/parrot-behavior-problems.html also my blog. type what you need in the search box for different articles This is a good one to start with goodbirdinc.blogspot.com/2013/08/a-good-start-to-good-bird.html
miss barbara I respect u with every beat my heart you are their teacher their mother their friend ?? I dont know but I bet your heart is a sea I dream to be like you and im gonna watch your videos one by one maybe my parrot sunny not my parrot I mean the member of my family will be just trained like your birds

Hi! I need ur help!! I hv a 6months old CAG, I got him wen he was 6 months old... By 10 weeks he learnt how to bark, laugh, blow kisses, poo poo trained, says WTF wen his b'fast is late, now he whistles James Bond and Star Wars, he loves cuddles a lot, very friendly, loves everyone in the family, only problem is he still wants me to feed him.. Won't eat his seeds or pellets loves human food, does not like his cage, flys everywhere from one room to another chews the wall paper, and the worst thing is he likes to sit on my head.. It was funny b4 but now it's painful he grabs on to my hair and won't let go, my head is his landing station, my head hurts...coz of him I can't go anywhere as he won't go into his cage, if I do manage to put him in, he starts his emotional blackmailing, jumping on to the bottom with a thud!! I get frighten thinking he will get hurt and get him out, is it advisable to clip his wing feathers as I am 100% sure he is going to fly out and never come back and how to make him eat his seeds and pellets, thanks!! Hope to hear from u 😢
Gizmo b I personally would not clip wings as the solution, I would learn about training with positive reinforcement! :) That really is the key to managing bird behavior. You will find it will totally open up a whole new world for you and how to interact with your bird and get him to do what you want when you want without having to be a bad guy. Instead you get to be the good guy and reinforce good behavior. It is a bit much to explain in a reply on youtube. I have comprehensive resources for you on my website. The two I would really recommend for you are my webinar recording on How to Train Behaviors www.goodbirdinc.com/goodbirdinc.com/parrot-store-digital.html and also my Basics of Training DVD www.goodbirdinc.com/goodbirdinc.com/parrot-store-dvds.html I highly recommend you check out one of those resources. They will be of great help
im still teaching my green cheek conure not pull away after receiving his treat through the harness.. he only learned two tricks and harness still a struggle
Kimai Firehawk harness training is a very difficult behavior for a bird that does not like to be touched. It requires extremely small approximations. If your bird is pulling away that means you are asking for more than he is ready for and your approximations are too big. read this blog for more info goodbirdinc.blogspot.com/2009/10/harness-training-your-parrot.html
he pulls away after receives the treat. randomly stays on for a long time but.. I try to make him think he really wants to put on the harness. seems to work better but still. been two months training him and just likes to get a treat and run off. he's 5 months so im patient enough to wait as long as it takes but hope its soon. Like to know more ways or help with his training.
Kimai Firehawk definitely read the blog I posted in my previous response and see the video clip there. It will answer your questions. Your approximations are too big.
I am going to refer you to my FAQ page as it has the answer to your question with a list of resources to help you. There are other questions/resources listed there that may also be of interest to you as well. Go to my website and look for the blue box on the top left of the page. You will find the link there.
check out my blog. It has a page about diet and motivation. Just type "training diet" in the search option on the right side of my blog page. You will see the tab for my blog at the top of my website. UA-cam wont let me post the url here.
i have a blue and gold macaw its a boy and hes 3 years old and we got him 2 months ago and hes still agressive i give him treats stay with him a little while i copy what he does some times tell him stories but i wanna pet him like you do sooo bad he will let me touch him tail but if i start touching his wing he wants to bite me and that scares me since those birds can rip a finger off he bit my mom and sisrer deep and they started to bleed even though we tell him no stop it no biting or no treats he still does it idk how to pet him 😣😧😦
Do check out this clip of mine on how parrots like to be touched. Most do not like their tails or wings touched. That is part of why you are seeing an aggressive response ua-cam.com/video/QifLP03gdZg/v-deo.html And then overall I would recommend some of my other resources to help you start building a bond. I have a free webinar on rescued and rehomed birds that I do think would also be very helpful to you. It is #8 on this page www.goodbirdinc.com/parrot-store-digital.html If you like that I would also recommend the webinar on aggressive behavior. That should get you started on a better path with your bird.
go to my blog and enter training diet in the search option. It will bring up an article that explains all about motivation for treats and treats I use. UA-cam wont let me post the link here.
@seapeddler They are not really built to eat meat, altough pet parrots seem to enjoy the taste of cooked meat from time to time. I personally tend to avoid it with parrots and stick to something more suited for the species.
@0gostrun go to my blog on my website. Then search "training diet" in the search box about half way down on the right. It tells you all about what I feed. website is good bird inc.
@sarpreet321 if you go to my website (goodbirdinc) and click on the blog you can do a search for "diet" and get a detailed explanation on the treats I use and how I create motivation. There is also a blog on training baby parrots. Search thos words too. Also check out my FAQ behavior problem page for a list of resources to help you get started with your bird. The link to that is on my home page of my website in the blue box on the top left hand side.
my parrot is killing me he is too small .. idk will he grow up or no he comes in my shoulder and bite my ears :@ :@ :@ or bites my fingers .. hes even smarter than me hes sooo small ! i want him to stop biting .. but he keeps on biting again !
check out my website. I have resources to help you with that : ) Go the FAQ page. You will see a link to it in the blue box on the top left hand side of my home page
You can totally train your parrot ; ) Definitley visit my website (GoodBirdInc) and go to the FAQ page. You will see a blue box on the top left side of the home page with the link. There are links to resources for you there. Especially look at the info on training step up.
