So many people missing the point here. This man isn't chastising anyone personally for buying other non-native made merchandise. He's merely expressing how it makes HIM feel so why are people attacking him? Is it so wrong that he would prefer the items representing his culture were made by his community? I would want to support them and not some corporation like Forever 21 that pays slave wages and produce shit quality.
AuroraBorealis I would feel annoyed too about the fake native art. Oftentimes non natives take sacred symbols or designs and use them for profit without giving credit to or thinking about Native people.

When the market reopens...I plan on stopping by here and supporting this place. I really want to learn more about the local Native American's in my area. I wish the tribes around here had festivals or did things to teach people about their culture...I can't find any information about any of that (and I looked before the outbreak).

There is a beautiful publication on a little-explored subject on native American glassmakers. The title of the publication is "Fusing Traditions: Transformations in Glass by Native Americans." Wonderful photographs and bios by these talented artists. Book is available at: www.fineartspress.com
for those thinking why he is complaining about the mechandising of native culture... think on a scenario that your work is something you can make a living with, help communities and create a path to new gens. BUT seeing that your work have a market, someone copy and use your idea to satisfy the demand without giving the proper credit or your community getting nothing from it. the problem is not the merchandising is the lack of recognition or if this work will help the maintance of native culture.
I live on what used to be native land, and I have a cottage with Ojibwe rock paintings of Nanabush.. I have always felt a respect for the history of this land. If I were to sew my own Ojibwe patterns.. would that be appropriating? I want to preserve a tradition of art and culture.. But I worry that this in itself could be considered offensive..
Do I avoid appropriation? Or help preserve culture?
Is an archeologist an appropriator of artifacts, or a preserver of history?
Sandra Cho I think your comment is the best by far because it's actually engaging and questions the aspects of what could be right or wrong with doing what you're doing rather than just claiming stuff like "snow flakes" or something of the like
Appropriation to me is when you take something from another culture and disregard the meanings or origin of your inspiration. I think it would be fine to do this because you have a personal connection and clearly intend to credit your inspiration and avoid disrespect.
As for the archeologist... it depends on the point of view, but they do not appropriate artifacts- they take them of of context and their home.
It’s the classic indiana jones vs. Nazi artifact appropriator. I guess the conclusion is that you can be influenced by different nations, as long as you know in your heart you are doing right by said nations by paying the proper respects.
if you want ask do the art ask the people who really know about the stuff and engage them first? maybe dont put yourself in front alone when talking about this to a bigger audience but bring someone who actually own the culture and also let them talk? these are what i can think of

Great company! What is really frustrating is that so many Native artists struggle to find customers while most customers buy imported Pretendian trash. Only Native made dreamcatchers work, BTW. All the rest summon Freddy Kruger.

It's beautiful art and I'm glad they want to carry on their heritage, but I am going to assume none of those people are 100% Native American. Even if they are all pure bred, selling the images on shoes and cell phones is just as bad. I'm sure the original creators of that art were putting them on plastic and rubber a thousand years ago. Any way you want to look at it... it's all for money.

My point is that the people he is complaining about made his current job possible. He takes full advantage of the positives other companies created (interest in his art), while only talking about the negatives.
no, those other merchants didn't create an interest in native american art. that's been a thing for a while now. however, they are exploiting and appropriating it with kitsch or by not recognizing the original artist, which is ethically not cool. real native american artists deserve both recognition and payment for real native american art, which is what he's trying to do.
If you think circulating native american themed items through our society did not help to maintain or increase interest, you should really check yourself.

Do you think some hippie chick would really care and be interested of the origins of native artwork. It wouldnt benefit native people if some comapy sells some shitty knockoff of their art.
